Introduction: I have been a professional artist and illustrator since 1992 and have been teaching children and adults for over twenty years. My artwork can be found in collections across the US and abroad. My first illustrated book, Aviary Wonders Inc., won the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers. Commitment to developing skills is more important than having natural talent. I'll teach you to draw and paint from observation so that you have an understanding of proportion, color harmony and temperature, and are able to portray convincing forms in space. With these skills, you'll have what it takes to paint anything- from still-lifes or landscapes, to abstraction or illustration. I teach private and group lessons in my home studio. Private lessons, available to students age 12+, are $50/hr. Semi-private (2 students) are $75 hour. Courses in painting, drawing, and illustration are offered on a regular basis. Visit our website for more information or email me.

I took basic drawing and and figure drawing with Kate, as well as doing a few private sessions. She's extremely talented and has a very thorough understanding of the process of anything she seeks to teach, so she can explain it from all aspects. Her approach feels very academic, and I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who wants learn proper techniques starting out, or people who have been creating for a long time and would like to add some foundation to their process. I always admired her personal work because of its whimsy and imaginative qualities (her story lines feel very original), both of which are obviously grounded in dedication to traditional techniques of the masters. She's also very supportive, and ended up being a mentor of mine. Her feedback helped me to take my own work seriously, and really solidify my artistic voice. I can honestly say her encouragement has been instrumental in my continuing to practice and improve on my skills. She's one of the first people who really believed in me, and I'll always be grateful for that. Anyway, classes with Kate are a great investment! Take them!

Kate was an outstanding teacher. She taught not only the art of painting but the craft of good content. Additionally, your success mattered not by your level of education. From beginner to master, all artists can learn from Kate Samworth.

Kate is teaching my daughter to observe, draw, and paint using various media. Kate seems to proceed in a very methodical and organized way, so that my daughter's skills and knowledge build progressively. What a pleasure!

I took Kate's drawing class when she taught at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA. She is a very talented artist and teacher. The exercises we did in her class were challenging and taught me a lot in a relatively short period of time. Kate's teaching style was very enjoyable - she was focused, kind, and attentive to each student. If I lived in the DC area I would be excited to take a class from her again!
