I learned how to to write and perform comedy in college. But I didn’t learn how to take my comedy ambitions seriously until I met MaBinti Yillah. Way back then, MaBinti and I met in an english literature class. I told her I was in the campus sketch comedy group and that I did stand up. She took a liking to me and told me that that she wanted to coach me to success. She did just that. She encouraged me to compete in a national college stand up competition and I ended up representing my college against a host of other institutions. She pushed me to write and film my own content instead of waiting for other people to discover me, and those production skills I learned under MaBinti’s tutelage continued to serve me as I made my way to New York City. She taught me the value in networking, expanding my circles beyond local comedians, and marketing myself to the point where other people talk about my brand, which all help to further my comedy career now that I’m making a way for myself in Los Angeles, California. I have MaBiniti to thank for giving me honest criticism and encouraging words back in the beginning of my comedy career. She helped me believe that comedy could be more than just a hobby and that I could be one of the most successful people in the entertainment industry. I am forever grateful and indebted to MaBinti for all she’s done for me and continues to do for me as we both traverse our ambitious careers.
