Michael Lindsay - Piano and Drum Lessons
About this pro
Mike is an amazing teacher! He is incredibly knowledgable and is willing to work with you where you are. I was around 34 when I started taking drumming lessons with Mike and didn't know much about reading music. It was my first time holding drum sticks and within the first two lessons I had a good understanding of how to read notes and apply what I've learned practically. Within the first couple of months I was doing well and could pretty much understand how to dissect a song, play along and keep up with the pace. My questions were always answered and he worked with me so well whenever I was stuck. Beyond teaching music, Mike very encouraging has an impressive ability to work through intellectual obstacles, equipping his clients with the tools they need to keep progressing and moving forward. I WISH I had starting working with Mike when I was a young kid, but he was probably not born yet...and two continents away. I wholeheartedly recommend this teacher!!!!!!! If you have an opportunity to work with Mike, take it!Oct 8, 2017
Mike is a kick ass drum teacher! He is extremely knowledgable and highly skilled in many areas. He knows exactly what to prescribe to help you achieve your goals in music. If you are a beginner, he'll set you up with a solid foundation for playing any style of music that interests you. He's super friendly, caring, and passionate about what he does. Was lucky enough to study with this guy for 5 years. HIGHLY recommend him, not your "average" drum teacher, truly an inspirationMay 11, 2017

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I charge on a $60/hour scale and teach lessons that are 30, 45, and 60 minutes long. For house calls, I calculate my travel cost at $1/minute that it takes for me to travel to and park at your residence. For example, it would take me 16 minutes to get from my home (near Eastern Market) to Alexandria, VA @ 2 pm. So for a 60 minute lesson in Alexandria @ 2pm I charge $76 ($60 for the hour + $16 for the travel cost).
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?First, I want to hear about your musical goals so I have a sense of what you want to accomplish. Some goals are more defined than others and that's ok, I just want to make sure I know that I have a sense of what you are looking for. From there, we will begin: maybe with a song you like, maybe with some technical exercises, maybe picking up where you left off in a book - it all depends on your goals. At this point, I will be getting a feel for how you learn best and I'll begin crafting a plan that is tailored to your goals and how you are best suited to approach them. Everyone learns differently and it's my job as a teacher to make the journey from A to B as smooth as possible.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?In formal education, I have a B.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of Southern California. Apart from school, I have over 20 years of musical performance experience and 17 years of teaching experience. I have studied with world-class musicians such as Peter Erskine, Dave Weckl, and Russell Ferrante, and have worked with artists such as Andy Grammer, Pat Metheny, Steve Miller, Ramsey Lewis, and Christina Aguilera. In teaching, I draw from a broad range of musical experiences in genres such as jazz, pop, rock, funk, gospel, country, and classical, and have performance experience in settings such as national tours in big theaters, smaller settings such as recording studios, musicals, churches, house shows and coffee shops, recordings for live TV, film, and the web.
