It is with great pleasure we are writing this review for an outdoor project on our property in Williamsburg done by Melllis Custom Carpentry. We live on a tidal creek leading to the James River and we wanted a walkway that would stretch from the bottom of our deck stairs to a creekside kayak put-in. The path would follow a sloping dirt path through trees and shrubs. We interviewed several companies including Mellis Custom Carpentry and were immediately impressed with Adam Mellis, the owner. He grasped our vision for the walkway and was able to articulate a number of ways to accomplish it. We would have liked a stone pathway but because we were concerned about the tree roots that would have to be cut to build the base Adam suggested a raised wood walkway. He sketched out a preliminary design which would have concrete piers with wood support beams attached. The walkway deck would be laid over joists going from beam to beam. The walkway would curve through the woods. Adam’s price was competitive and reasonable and we agreed to move forward. Adam didn’t cut corners. All his work was inspected and approved by the appropriate James City County inspectors. James City County requires special hardware on parts of the framing to guard against hurricane damage. Adam did more than required, explaining that it would enhance the security but also lead to a more solid product—and it did! After work had begun we decided that we would like to have edging on the walkway and Adam suggested using 2 x 10s that would be bolted to the supporting beams. He would use clamps to bend the lumber to follow the curve of the walkway. It took a lot of work for Adam but the curves look so nice and natural. For the amount of work involved, the time taken to complete the project was reasonable. Adam would keep us informed if he would be delayed. Susan, in the office, was very pleasant to deal with. She quickly sent “Paid” invoices after I had paid the various agreed-upon draws during the contract period. Adam was meticulous in his workmanship. We saw him cutting tapers into deckboard after deckboard so that they would produce an esthetically pleasing curve. If the curve didn’t look right to him he would redo it. The end product was magnificent. People who have seen it are very impressed. After the James City County inspector ended his final inspection he told us that the walkway “looked like it should be in a National Park.” Without reservation we recommend Mellis Custom Carpentry for your next project.

Hired on Thumbtack

I talked to Susan on June 7th. Sent the pictures of how I wanted the back of the bench to look & she called back saying he would look over it on the weekend. I told her to tell him to take his time, I wasn't in a huge hurry. Well I have called numerous times & send emails and as of 9/7/2016 have not heard back from them since June. Nothing telling me is wasn't possible or something they couldn't do, no communication whatsoever.
