I broke my air conditioning last night. I tried figuring it out for hours until I had to just go to bed.
First thing this morning, I post on Thumbtack for a professional. Tobie responded in under half an hour, and I called him right away. He was really friendly, and listened as I told him what I did to break everything.
He shared a lot of eye-opening information with me about my unit, and asked me questions like, "When you turn it on, does anything respond?" and "When you switch the thermostat to 'cool' do you hear a little click?"
I answered his questions and then OVER THE PHONE he gave me the solution to my problem! He explained in clear detail what I should do, what pieces I should buy and where I could buy them. Honestly, it would have been to his advantage (and still totally fair) to just come to my house, and charge me his rate to fix the problem. But I really felt like he was putting my interests first, and not looking to fill his own pockets.
Because of him, my problems were solved in under an hour. And he didn't ask for anything in return!
I don't meet people like this very often.. I am really, really impressed.

Phillips says I need a new furnance based on a reading of 32-34 CO (carbon monoxide) from his device. If it gets past 35, furnance must be shut down for safety reasons. He gave me a verbal estimate (not a written estimate on paper) on the cost of a new furnance using a name brand I never heard of. I contacted the main gas company, who supplied gas for the home, for a second opinion by one of their certified technicians. He came out quickly and tested the whole furnance for cracks and leaks. He also checked for CO level and had a reading of zero! The technician says I have a few years left before replacing a new furnace.
Always ask for a second opinion and NEVER trust an independent contractor who is trying to scam you to make a lot of money.

Tobie was personable and did a great job replacing the duct work in our house and explaining the heating problems we were having. He gave us a very competitive price, did more work than he thought he would have to and still held to his original quote. We will for sure be using his services again in the future.
