Introduction: Marker training is our primary technique and involves making a distinct sound, usually with a plastic "clicker." You may also choose a verbal marker- a word like "Yes!" The marker sound is "paired" with something that your dog enjoys. This is often food but can also be a game, petting from you, or anything else that your dog will work for. Once your dog understands that the marker sound means "good things are coming," it serves to communicate the behavior that you want your dog to repeat. Because markers — especially those using a clicker — are so precise, dogs (and other animals) trained using this method pick up new behaviors readily and often learn more quickly than those trained by using food or praise alone.
