Introduction: Using the most direct methods of vocal instruction and technique, expect to make leaps of progress immediately! She is currently teaching exclusively via Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts. Please contact the school directly (website below) to set up a consultation! Uzma Khan has been singing and dancing for as long as she can remember and is so excited to share her genuine passion for all things musical with her new students. She has long since embraced musical expression as not only the ultimate form of therapy, but as a best friend in life -- something one always has to turn to, in good times and bad. Not only does she believe music to be a vital source of solace and sanctuary for people of all ages, but she is well aware of the vast range of benefits derived from playing and singing music, ranging from relaxation and stress-relief, to increased coordination and I. Q.! For these reasons, Uzma focuses on instruction in two main areas. The first being in technical ability and understanding of the vocal apparatus as an instrument. This is important because the better handle one has on their voice the more free they are to enjoy it! Second, she specializes in developing her students' unique and authentic voices so as to maintain the integrity of their true soul's expression. For those who are interested, she also specializes as a songwriting coach, teaching an organic process that taps into one's inherent ability to create, and has witnessed overwhelming success through the use of this method! This includes instruction in basic self-accompaniment. Uzma brings years of experience in private classical piano study and competition (she frequently won state competitions in both voice and piano), school choirs, bands, and musical theater productions to the table as well as experience as a touring musician and a Bachelors of Music from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), where she majored in Music Business/Management and studied under several of the industry's best contemporary vocal instructors. She has spent two decades amassing a wealth of knowledge and is now eager to share all that she has to offer with you!

I started taking vocal lessons with Uzma this summer, and signed up to continue with her in the fall. I am an adult and am primarily focused on songwriting and guitar. I’ve never been a strong or confident singer, and am taking voice lessons so I can sing my songs competently. There are several dimensions in which I view Uzma as a strong teacher, and it goes beyond just voice instruction. First, she doesn’t just understand music; she IS music. She has a musical way of interpreting life and the world, and it has helped me not only with singing but with songwriting. She is gifted at being able to explain her approach. Second, possibly because of her course of pre-med before choosing to study music, she understands anatomy and physiology. Because of this, she can articulate the changes that need to occur in the body in order to sing, in a highly specific way. Third, but not least, her demeanor is calm, warm, and engaging; she has a delightful laugh. She balances seriousness with a sense of humor, and this makes me comfortable. In the past I have been a very reluctant singer; I felt embarrassed to sing and I was pulling my voice back into myself. But she makes me feel okay about it and is entirely positive and objective in her feedback. I am starting to sing with more confidence. The results: I am not sure I ever sang on key in my entire life. After a couple of lessons I was hitting the notes when I sang scales. And in the third or fourth lesson, I hit all the pitches in a section of a song that was beyond what I would have ever considered my range. For me this was a major feat.

Many times I walked away from class with a profound lesson taught to me by Uzma. She has wonderful clarity, a beautifully refined ear, and a strong singing voice. I looked forward to my time with her always.
