So glad we found Lucas and Brianne to be our wedding photographers. They are very relaxed and easy to work with, and we felt we could trust them completely. Couldn't have chosen anyone better.

Tim is great to work with and you can't beat the value, and he delivers quality. He was easy going & my baby was accepting of his presence. We did outdoor family, one year old smash cake pictures with Tim.

Kathi was a wonderful photographer for our family photos. She came in with plenty of group photo ideas and was also great at doing shots that we requested. The photos turned out exactly as we imagined! She used time very efficiently and we had every shot we needed well before our time was up. My family was thrilled with her and were eager to take business cards to hand out to others!

Alison Bivens has been our family photographer for over 4 years now. She is excellent at capturing the most raw and natural moments even when my kids act crazy and I think she couldn't have possibly captured any usable photos, she always surprises me with the best photos of my little family. She's amazing.

Patrick is personable, professional, and has a real talent for capturing the best photos. From family portraits at my father's 90th birthday to candid shots of the guests, his work was even better than I had hoped, and we now have wonderful memories through his pictures. I highly recommend his photography, and will be using his services again.

Our experiences with Melissa Tash at Spoiled Rotten Photography have been delightful. She has the ability to make even the most self-conscious of us feel at ease and she captures more than eyes and smiles. She captures personalities and character. When I see our family portraits, I smile and say, "This! This is who we are. She got us!" I cherish the moments she has preserved for us, and know I will cherish these treasures even more as the years pass. Simply the BEST!!

I can't say enough how much my family and I loved having Brianna as my wedding photographer. The weather on my wedding day was cold, wet, and not at all ideal for an outside wedding. In spite of that, Brianna took absolutely beautiful pictures. You wouldn't even know that we were all freezing! Besides being a fabulous photographer, Brianna is so kind and thoughtful. I would recommend her to everyone that I know!

I highly recommend that you book with this amazing photographer! She does outstanding photography! We booked our first family session with her last fall and another session for my daughter's first birthday! She made us feel very comfortable, was super friendly and very patient with our kids.

Lindz met me and my 5 grand kids downdown at Big Spring Park. She did a fabulous job getting all of them to all be looking at her, looking natural and not acting up. They age from 5 to 16 and I know it was hard to keep their attention, but she did it and the pictures turned out perfect.

Wow! What to say... I have worked with a LOT of photographers in my life for weddings and special events, and NEVER have I been so impressed with someone's professionalism and work. Bryan was an absolute ninja - he was all over the place at once but never disturbed the intimate feel of our baby shower. I truly never noticed how many places he was at once. He captured AMAZING candid moment for us, he captured all the details of our special day, he got group shots, and even took portraits of our families. The only reason I hesitate posting this is because I want to use Bryan for every life event we have moving forward and don't want him to get overbooked. 😂 I almost forgot to mention the NIGHTMARE it can be to work with a photographer who holds your photos hostage... you know the deal, 2 weeks after your wedding and you've gotten a sample package of 10 photos meaning social media posts and all else is on pause. Bryan however sent us all photos within a day. A day. Edited and retouched and the entire files loaded for us. What a relief to work with such a professional for our big day! Take a look at my baby shower and let me know if you think I forget a detail - I am type A, hyper organized, and plan everything to perfection, INCLUDING this photography recommendation. Thanks Bryan! We will be booking again FOR SURE!

What a wonderful photographer. She took my suggestions into consideration and had many ideas on style, positioning, etc herself. She is so patient and creative. I'm so pleased with how our pictures were done.

We were looking for someone to take our family photos, and I'm so very glad we chose Anthony!! He was able to make my family feel at ease, and captured some beautiful pictures. Anthony is very easy-going and listened to what we were hoping to get out of our pictures, and he did exactly that, plus some! I am thrilled with how they turned out and can't wait to do it again!

She was upfront and honest from the beginning of our conversation stating she was a beginner photographer and have done all her photography on her leisure time. My family and I took a chance with her and she presented herself in a fun but professional way. She didn't make things uncomfortable. We had a small family reunion and the pictures were stunning. She took posed and unpredictable, unexpected pictures. We are very happy we took a chance with her and will hire her again in the future.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

    • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
    • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
    • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
    • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
    • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
    • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
    • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
    • Opt for tonally similar colors.
    • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

    • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
    • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
    • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
    • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
