Introduction: Honestly, you have a huge range of tutors available to you. How do you choose? Look at reviews, look at curriculum, and identify what's special about that person and how they will serve your child... I've been teaching my specialized writing curriculum since 2013, when I began coaching writing to pay for food while studying Philosophy at the University of Cambridge (UK). I have lived all around the world. I've walked the Kumono Kodo and Camino de Santiago. "Those who can't do, teach." It's a maxim I defy every day. I believe that we are limitless and can create our own way in this world. As much as it is writing that I am teaching, I am showing your child how to use their mind to introspect, analyze, and execute. I walk the walk, too. I've worked with 100's of students. I've progressively sharpened my focus. I now specialize in Grades 5 - 6. I instruct students in how to memorize and then thoughtfully break rules of writing and style. I can also offer grade-level development of grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills. I have experience working with learning differences. As a teacher living among the people in villages and cities while backpacking across the world, I connect with your child’s curiosity and spirit. There is no better place to start an investigation into Critical Thought than that...

He is quite the guy! I really like how he relates to me and even reaches out to me outside of the sessions. I personally think he is one of the best tutor and dare I say a really good life coach I have encountered so far. Thank you for everything Theo... Before I signed up with this tutoring program, I was not very good academically. In fact, I was the worst in the toolshed. Knowing that I have no time to lose and my bleak future is upon me, I did what many people think it's best; To join the military. I didn't know what to expect of the navy to be honest, so I was unaware of the test you need to take called the asvab. My heart sank a little. I began searching on the Internet, looking for a tutor (especially on math) until I found out about Theo. Theo is the CEO for student circle and unlike other tutors; he is the only one that stood out. First, I worked with Theo six months in mathematics. He is understanding, ambitious, and kind, but most importantly he can relate to you, creating a special bond which prompts you to succeed. My situation was that after six months working on half the test, I was switched to another tutor to complete new sections of the test. Theo set me up with another tutor by the name of Xin. Right off the bat both of us got along and he helped me through two grueling months. There were times when I wanted to give up, but he was there for me. The funny thing is, he is going through an exam as well during my time with him, so he is the hardest working tutor I have ever came across. I swear, these two do actually care about me because when I took the asvab, I scored high enough to achieve some of the most coveted jobs the navy has to offer! StudentCircle creates the best sessions as well as memories. These two will forever be part of my family. Thank you, Andrew

Name: Tomoko Hoshi My 9 years old son sees Theo every week for the past three months to improve his reading skill. It was too hard for me (non-native) to teach my son because he thinks he's not good at reading and his reading is painstakingly slow and that frustrates him. Theo is quite an amazing teacher. I do wonder how much time he takes outside his one-on-one teaching time to be always so fully prepared. He's someone who has a keen interest in how a child's mind works in learning, what motivates him, and how can a tutor help the child to overcome his weakness. It seems there's no idle conversation between the tutor and the learner; Theo is constantly analyzing my son's English output and seeking pattern in his mistakes while not forgetting to give positive feedbacks for his small victories. We're very happy with Theo and highly recommend him as a tutor. ~Tomoko

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I bill on the 5th and 20th of each month ~ invoice emailed via Stripe. You may register a credit/debit and enable auto-pay if you wish.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I offer incoming clients a free consultation online. The consultation allows a family to get a feel for work with me before starting. The consult also gives me a chance to learn about your student and begin to design a lesson plan. We begin lessons in my writing curriculum. As for development in vocab, grammer, reading comp, I will conduct assessments for the first few weeks and then put together a progress plan with goals specific to your child.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I came from a large family that did not have the resources to care for all of us. I was the eldest of six and the only boy. I became independent at a young age. When I reached High School, I acted out on my percieved powerlessness at home. At the same time as I was getting into trouble for behavioral infractions, I became noted as a young and talented local playwright, made captain of a championship basketball team, and was elected as our graduating class' Senior Speaker. I even invited Ralph Nader to the school as a guest for our lunch-time discussion club. I didn't tell any of the school staff, either. That was a good one. When I graduated, my family moved overseas and left me to care for our family home -- now empty. I got a job making sandwiches and went to community college. I found my first academic love: philosophy. With a fresh start, I committed myself to academic success... And, did I ever find it. My performance garnered a slew of academic and departmental awards, the top being a full semester scholarship to the University of Cambridge. Following my graduation, I worked in the kitchens of New York for a year. I earned a good amount of money for myself and moved out to Seattle with nothing but a backpack. There, I decided to make this company that could have provided the younger me with the role models I needed to engage with academics at a younger age.
