Kiran is an excellent educator. I don’t even have know where to begin with the amount of help he has given me throughout our tutoring sessions. Before I was tutored by Kiran, I was overwhelmed with all the entry exams for the ACT and SAT, I was not performing well on the math sections so my parents thought it would be best to get me a tutor. Kiran helped me set up a schedule of where we would meet every weekend. The whole month of August every weekend I would be tutored for around 10 hours. It seems like a lot of time putting into tutoring and a lot of hard work, but Kiran made it feel so easy. He set up lessons custom to my style of learning and went over every math formula until I understood and memorized it. He helped me push myself to my best ability, and eventually made math one of my favorite subjects. My ultimate goal was to score higher on my act Math, and Kiran helped me score 6 points higher on my math section. (Which is very difficult and rare to have that big of a jump in test scores). With the help of Kiran, my ACT score went up, I got into the University I planned on going to, and I received a Merit Scholarship from that University. The math Kiran taught me was specific to the ACT, however it has helped me so much more further than that. Such as in the classroom it’s so much more easier for me to understand and catch on to math, I am now able to comprehend problems and with the memorization of formulas I am able to test better. His teaching went beyond education, he helped me form confidence and valuing my education. He helped me realize that anything is possible as long as you work hard for it. His morals and teachings have motivated me and helped me reach my academic goal of going to my dream school on an academic scholarship.

Christrne Lim is a god send to students failing algebra! She brought my grandson from failing algebra to obtaining a C+. She is very capable technically, but to has the personality to make the student teacher situation a positive situation. She is positive, and looks forward to her visits with the student. Knowledge and professionalism with understanding make her the best choice possible. We will have her this coming year to get my grandson off to a good start.

Christopher is a miracle worker. I hired him at close to the last minute to help my daughter prepare for the SSAT test, which was a last minute thing and left her only 2 weeks to prepare. I was concerned because she'd just come out of a gifted math class but was very confused and I was helpless in this new era of common core. In addition to an incredible manner with her, he prepared and gave her the confidence she needed to get 98-99th percentiles on the test. He was happy to go over any subject. Now that she's in a private middle school, we keep seeing Christopher once a week so she always has a helpful and supportive ear for the things mom and dad are useless at. Thanks so much Christopher!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
