Sylvester and his crew did a fantastic job! They called when they were on their way and arrived within the originally quoted window. They were careful with my things...moving them out of a storage unit and bringing them to my new house. Thank you thank you!!

Jason and his team were great! They handled the move extremely well and were done in the time frame I expected. They even exceeded my expectations on service. When a box that was not supposed to go to storage ended up there by mistake, Jason personally came back to help retrieve this important item and save the day - thank you!!

Frank and his team were professional, proficient, and very knowledgeable. They scheduled me in less then 24 hours and were the best price I could find after looking at dozens of pool table movers. Frank gave me additional tips for storage and was educational every step of the way. I will definitely be utilizing them again when I need my pool table transported again. Only compliant I have is Frank is a raiders fan 😂

I chose Jenny & John to restore some leaky old pipes in my bathroom after a friend had referred me. They are a husband and wife team; which I thought was very unique. They have a passion for what they do and were kind, courteous, and a pleasure to be around. Jenny also has extensive experience installing time and remodeling bathrooms. I decided to go through them for a remodel as well. It looks fantastic & was at a fair price!! I highly recommend them!

Daniel and John were on time, worked efficiently, and were done ahead of schedule. They were unfailingly polite and respectful of me and my posessions. Scheduling was easy and the price was exactly as quoted with--as Daniel promised--no hidden fees. I hired them to move things to storage and will definitely be calling on them when I sell my house and move later this spring.

Sean and his team were amazing. Right from the beginning Sean was quick with responding to me and answering all of my questions. The day of the move they showed up on time and packed us, dismantled furniture, loaded our POD, and drove things to our storage unit when the POD was filled. They did it all in a professional and timely manner. It was a huge relief not having to stress about getting this huge job done ourselves. We will definitely be using them again when we move into our new house and need to unpack!

We were having a sofa moved from a house to a storage locker. Unfortunately for them, their truck broke down. However, they secured a different truck and completed the move. Kudos to them for following through instead of informing us that they couldn't do the move

This was a difficult move that I was arranging for a disabled friend. Not only did we need movers, there was alot of junk that needed to be hauled away. They even provide storage if needed. Hogans took care of it all. Needless to say there were a lot of "moving" parts...LOL..no pun intended! Hogans stayed in touch with me through it all. Cedric and Kevin the movers who arrived on time, introduced themselves, were helpful, listened and hardworking. I would highly recommend Hogans!

The guys were great and really nice. They got caught in crazy Phoenix traffic and were about an hour late, so we were rushing a bit at the end, but they had planned for three hours and even with a 20/30 minute drive to the moving location, got everything done and placed for me in the exact amount of time they planned for.

Carnell saved the day! We had been deep cleaning our condo and bags of trash and clothes, boxes, carpets and more were placed on our back patio. Last night, I realized after all of the recent rain everything had gotten soaked/destroyed. I thought I’d be able to take it to the trash myself but boy was I mistaken. I frantically started looking up trash services and Carnell was the one of the few to respond (and at 8pm!!). He answered all of my questions and gave me detailed information and was available to come early the next morning and finish in record timing. Extreme added bonus - MUCH more reasonably priced. Definitely will use him again and refer him in the future for trash services or just moving!

The best moving experience I've ever had, from start to finish. Their quote was significantly cheaper than what I'd received from other moving companies, and they were very responsive to my questions in the days before the actual move. This was a local move within Phoenix. We went with the full packing and moving service, and the 4 movers were very friendly, thoughtful, and careful with our valuables. The pack went very smoothly and efficiently. The next day, the same 4 guys showed up, and they got everything out of our large 2-bedroom apartment in under 4 hours (even with the additional challenge of 3 narrow flights of stairs!) Moving into our new place was exceptionally smooth and easy, and they placed our large furniture items where we wanted them. Everything else was neatly stacked in such a way as to allow us to move around the apartment while unpacking. Everything was packed and moved safely, and nothing was damaged or broken. I HIGHLY Valley Student Movers!

OK - I admit, I didn't wind up using them - but I give them a five star rating all the same. I had placed a request for moving assistance in my own home because I was doing a flooring reno project and had to have all the furniture out of the bedrooms. Of all the moving companies contacted by Thumbtack, only two responded, one of which refused to help.I suppose this was too small of a job for them. Bellhops at least contacted me with a very reasonable offer for assistance. If I ever do move, I will use Bellhops.

So glad we found A to Z Valleywide Movers! They made sure all of our stuff was properly stored when we couldn't move into our new place right away. We were leery about keeping ALL of our stuff in one place, but it was safe and secure and we couldn't be happier with the state our things were returned to us in!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
