Ken did a tune up on our air conditioner and furnace. He found a problem with the blower motor in the attic. We have a home warranty so ordered service and sure enough he was exactly right. We had the part replaced and it is so much quieter and more efficient now. We would have never known it without Ken's professional evaluation. He also tuned up our air conditioner. He has done electrical work for us that was very complicated, but he kept working on it until he resolved the issue. He is extremely affordable, honest, and knowledgeable. It is fantastic to have someone like him to rely on. We couldn't recommend him more highly.

I can't tell you how impressed I am with Robert and his company. Communication was terrific, he arrived promptly and serviced my dishwasher to perfection. And, after dealing with quite a few surly repairmen over the years, Robert was a breath of fresh air. Cheerful, chatty, honest and devoted, I could only wish there were more like him! Overall, I'd rate this experience 11/10, and will definitely call Done Rite the next time an appliance gets all cranky on me.

Ken provided an air conditioner tuneup for a home I was planning on purchasing. Not only did he service the unit, he provided me insights as to what to expect in future years (i.e., how much longer the unit would work, ways I could extend its useful life, etc.). He was knowledgeable and friendly, and I give him my highest recommendation.

We were very pleased with the work we had Pacific Stone Flooring complete. We had Ivan and his crew raise our ceiling from an 8ft ceiling to a vaulted ceiling and it turned out great. They also did the drywall and texturing of the entire ceiling of the house. They wired and did the recessed lighting in the house, moved some of the air ducts as well. In addition to that we had him do the flooring in the house too!! The floor turned out great too! I would recommend Pacific Stone to anyone that needs some work done on their house.

I don’t know where to begin with Dave, he is so amazing. I hired him because we’ve worked with him before and we loved him so much last time. Our AC unit went out and was blowing hot air into the house, and the temp inside kept rising. He was here within an hour of me calling. I did some research and figured our capacitor was out...and the pros on here were quoting me around $200-300. I remembered that I had saved Dave’s card and called him instead. When he arrived, he asked where my husband was this time and I let him know that my husband was currently deployed. He came over, replaced the capacitor, did a thorough check afterwards..and since he knew my husband wasn’t here, walked around the perimeter checking and fixing things just to help me out. On his way out of the house, I asked him “ok, what do we owe you? And can you send me an invoice online like last time?” He said you owe me nothing. I thought I had heard wrong so I asked again and he said ma’am with everything your husband is dealing with while being deployed and serving our country, I am the one who owes him. I started tearing up and told him that I’d accept a discount but didn’t feel right just giving him nothing or could I at least buy him some lunch. And he said well with the money you are trying to give me, I’d rather you use it to take those 2 little ones (pointing to my kids) out to dinner tonight. I’m not in this business to get over in people, I just want to help. Please tell your husband thank you for his service. And he walked out. I was so grateful because Dave went above and beyond without once mentioning he was planning to not charge me. Also, he didn’t know this, but we had just had to deal with repairing my husband’s Audi which cost us a pretty penny. You just don’t fine genuinely good people like this anymore...most repairman are trying to charge as much as they can. Thank you so much Dave, this review doesn’t even begin to cover how grateful I am to you.

We had an issue with our heater at our rental property and had technicians from two different companies(one from the home warranty and another from a recommendation) come look at it, and they both mis-diagnosed it saying that we have a leak in the system and given the age of the system, suggested that I replaced the whole unit instead of fixing it, which according to them was going to be temporary. Just to get a third opinion, I got on to Thumbtack and fortunately found Sam from Hellerud Air, and before I even booked him for the job, I chatted with him online and had asked him at least 10 questions, and he answered all of them patiently and promptly. We had him come look at the system, and the first thing he did was to ask the tenant what the previous technicians did to check the system. He found out that the 2nd guy( the recommended one) did not even go into the attic to check the system. He then went and checked the whole system and did not see a leak. He found that for some reason the system did not have any Freon in it, so he filled the system up again and stayed there for couple of hours to see if there is any leak. He is planning to come back to check the unit again in two weeks time, to see if there is any leakage. I am thoroughly impressed with his professionalism, expertise and attention to detail. I will update my review again in two weeks time post his next visit.

I like the thoroughness of their efforts as well as the approach in which they take when it comes to finding the reason your air quality is not not operating at best potential. Speaking from experience, in the past I have delt with air-personnel in my home who were in a hurry to get in and out. I get it, AZ is hot! However, my bill continues to rise with the escape of air I pay for! I work hard for my money and do not like paying for a bill that continues to rise because of a leak in the flow. With your company, I feel my concerns were heard, hence delt with in a manner that would identify the actual problem verses feeding me information that has nothing to do with the problem at hand when it comes to my A.C. Barak was the auditor who serviced my home on 08/09/18 and I am very happy with his deliverance with ON POINT CUSTOMER SERRVICE!!! I heard about your company via Midday viewer special and I am thankful for tuning in when I did. I am thankful for your auditor and his service in my home. Thank you so much for assisting in making the air quality in my home better. I appreciate you! NicoleRodriguez

Always punctual, cordial and professional. His work was perfect quality. He will work with any schedule and can do everything. In my home he did the following: repaired a severe leak in my bathtub, replaced/upgraded all the hardware in my bathroom, replaced a sconce to a hanging electrical cord outlet, replaced all my smoke detectors which are also connected electrically, repaired my door jam and casing around my door which had been causing my electrical bill to soar as air was seeping in and out, and replaced a baseboard which was warped due to water damage. I plan to hire him to tile my bathrooms, hook up my plumbing when I get new counter tops and sinks, and paint my interior. I highly recommend Calvin Franklin.

I made my request to Dean after three other HVAC guys fizzled. He was at my house within two hours. He came, accessed the situation, hurried to the supply company. The air was up and running within five hours of my request to Thumbtack. The work was flawless, the price was right and Dean was extremely courteous. Do not bother to look any further. Call Dean and save yourself time, money and aggravation. I’ve had great success with Thumbtack. .

I got a home energy audit from Mountain Peak Air before the summer hit and I'm SO glad I did! They found a huge hole in my old rotted hard duct work. I ended up replacing all my duct work with nice insulated flex duct work and the air flow is 1000x better. Also added insulation in my attic since I barely had anything and re-did the weather stripping on my exterior doors. My electric bills have been way lower (because I'm not cooling my attic!!) and we are much more comfortable. They were professional, got the work done quickly, and it was super reasonable especially since I got $700 back from SRP rebates. Highly recommend this company.

Quality Air Services cleaned up a nightmare mess the previous a/c company created. They came on time, were on budget (and yes, i paid extra for same day service but worth it) and completely professional. Also, did not dis on other company but kindly said they seem to be in over their head. They had us up and running in about an hour. I would definitely recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
