My husband and I found out late that we needed a petsitter for the Christmas weekend. Leslie found me on Thumbtack, met with me the next day and started petsitting the day after that. I came home to happy animals and a clean house. I feel very lucky to have found a petsitter like Leslie on such short notice, and my dogs and cat were lucky to have such an animal person to take care of them. Thank you!

She is a great asset to my family. She cares a lot for animals. My dog was diagnosed with liver failure, and has to be fed four times a day. Beth comes over to walk him two to three times a week. My dog Bogey loves it when she comes over. Beth is there for us, even if it is last minute. I can call her an hour before if there is a problem with me getting home in time. We just love her and trust her fully with my baby.

We have 2 dogs and a cat who needed care while we were out of town for a wedding. Our cat needs two medications, twice daily once being an insulin shot and the other being an oral medication. After speaking with Rachael we chose AZ Mama Bear Pet Care because they have experience with administering those types of medications. They did a great job. The pets seemed happy and well taken care of. We even got photos sent to us while we were away. We will definitely call them again if we need a pet sitter.

"Aunt" Claire had the lowest quote for me and her quote was reasonable in my opinion since my cats don't require a ton of work. They only eat dry cat food, aren't on any medications, use the same litter box and either drink out of the toilets or a glass on the bathroom counter. I needed someone to come in and make sure the toilets were flushed, their water glass was full, the dry cat food fresh and the litter scooped. Claire texted me daily updates and also kept the floor swept where the litter box is kept. She came by the house first to make sure we were on the same page about expectations and took great notes before she took the job. I will absolutely call on Claire in the future when I need pet-sitting - She's an animal lover and it's reassuring to have someone like her provide for the care of my cats.

After speaking to Mary, I felt confident that she would take good care of my pet bunny, Geneva. She is VERY knowledgeable about animals and animal health, she seemed gentle and made a connection with Geneva easily. She was also quickly to respond and great about sending updates. I felt safe leaving my keys with her and she went out of her way to return them promptly. I will definitely hire her again in the future!

Karen and Stevan are a godsend. We have been using their services since May, so we are a little late on our review. We have to say that they are very caring and kind to our animals...and they will even tell you...we have a few. They spend their time with our animals doing more than we could ever thank them for. They are meticulous about the feeding, watering, cleaning up and just loving our animals and it gives us great peace and relaxation when we know they are with them. Once again...We could not possibly be happier with their services and their professionalism. They are just incredibly good people...even though we would love to keep them all to ourselves, we still highly recommend them to everyone. Alicia loves animals and has always had pets. You have to know that anyone who goes to the time and expense to make her dog's food really cares about animals. She respects the wishes of her customers no matter how eccentric. Some people are very particular and Alicia is very accommodating and respectful.

Brian really cared about my little old and matted kitty. Her disposition has changed as she's gotten older and she wasn't the sweet young thing I'm so used to. He called and checked in with me because he knew I was worried and alleviated all my concerns. She was tough with him, (so sorry Brian) but he was a caring professional with her. His dedication meant the world to me and Pepper looks adorable! I will bring my animals back to him regardless of how far he may be from where I live because I know I'm getting the best in the valley! I highly recommend this animal lover to take care of your pet!

She was incredible with my dog (toy poodle). So loving and treated her as if she owned her. Let my dog sleep with her and what I really liked was that she paid attention to the diet I had outlined. Some people don't care what they feed your dog. Also, my dog had to have 2 insulin shots daily. She handled that perfectly! I would hire her any time, such a relief to know that your dog is in very good care while your care, however I live out of state

When I lived in Phoenix, I without fail used TLC to care for my cats while I was on vacation. In one instance, when I was seriously ill and in the hospital, Margie and staff came to my apartment and cared for my cats for 9 days on the spur of the moment. The staff is clean, experienced, courteous and Margie only hires caring animal lovers as staff. I would not hesitate to recommend TLC While You're Away to anyone in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.

    About

I love animals. I work as a fast food crew member at the moment but would love to quit and work full-time around animals. I thought that I would give the dog walking a try since I love to walk, be outside and be around animals. I had dogs and cats my whole life, and I think that they're awesome.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

    • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
    • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
    • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
    • What are your different walk routes?
    • When will you pick up and drop off?
    • How will we communicate?
    • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
    • What’s your cancellation policy?
    • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
    • How and how often do I pay you?
    • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

    • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
    • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
    • Wash and dry: $60
    • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
    • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
