Good morning! I recently set out on a quest to find someone to clean my carpets and tile. My first step was to go to Groupon, which is the normal route. I spent several hours perusing the 20+ possibilities; checked pricing, ratings, websites, etc. I finally settled on one and decided to give him a call before I purchased the Groupon. I left a message…and waited…and waited…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. In the meantime, I googled carpet cleaning services, noticed Thumbtack and decided to give it a try. What do I have to lose, right? I received a very quick response from Chris’ Quick Dry Cleaning via email. At first, I was a little skeptical because his prices were so reasonable. Mom always said, you get what you pay for. But I wanted to speak with Chris and we connected via phone. He was such a nice person! Small business trying to grow his customer base and I had a very good feeling about him and his abilities so we hired him. He is fantastic! This 12 year old carpet has not looked this good in a long time and my grout! When my husband came home he was amazed. I HIGHLY recommend Chris. He is now our permanent carpet cleaning service. CHOOSE THIS GUY! Look no further, because Armando at Happy Wand is the guy you want to hire to clean your carpet and tile! I initially hired Armando to clean and seal the grout in my tile. He did a great job. It just so happened that the day before, I had hired someone else on Thumbtack (with very good reviews) to clean all the carpeted areas in my house. This other guy did not use a steam machine but instead sprayed some chemical and then scrubbed the carpet with a floor buffer with a pad attachment. When Armando arrived at my house to clean my grout, he asked if I needed any carpet cleaning, and he was surprised when I told him I had just had my carpet cleaned the day before. He noticed that the carpet didn't look fully clean, and he steam cleaned a couple of my stairs (which had just been cleaned by the other guy the day before) to show me that he could get the carpet cleaner. What a difference in Armando's cleaning and the other guy! The improvement was immediately noticeable! So, for a VERY reasonable price, Armando steam cleaned my stairs, hallway, and family room. The results were fantastic! Keep in mind that all these areas had been cleaned by someone else just 24 hours prior, but the improvement in cleanliness and appearance of the carpet after Armando was finished was very dramatic. Armando was extremely courteous and worked very hard while he was at my house, and like I said, the results of his work were magnificent! I wouldn't take the time to write such a long review if I didn't think he was absolutely the best. Hire Armando at Happy Wand, and you will be very satisfied with his work!

The carpet installation was done well and completed quickly My only issue was damage done to an entrance floor tile and walls in the stairway. They came back and repaired the tile, but should have let me know that it was damaged when the job was done. It was a large, obvious piece broken off, adjacent to the new carpeting. A little more care of the property would have been appreciated.

Hector was very responsive and friendly. I had him do several small carpet repairs. He did a great job. The areas in the bedroom and on the stairs looked great when he was finished. The doorways were a challenge because the carpet was badly damaged and old. He told me my options and his concerns and we made a decision. He spent a long time working on those areas to make them look as good as possible and had me inspect his work when he was done. I will hire Hector for all my carpet repairs.

I had 3 bedrooms and a walk-in closet with carpet I wanted replaced with some type of wood- look flooring. Ray came to my house, took measurements and explained all of my options with hardwood, laminate and vinyl including the plusses and minuses of each. He had many samples and laid them out next to my furniture so we could see how it matched. We discussed pricing and a schedule for installation. Ray was extremely professional and did not try to upsell. The day of the original scheduled installation, Thursday, I was called by the installers saying the material was late in arriving and said they could come the following day, Friday. I said OK. Friday morning , a man arrived to rip out the carpet and patch the tack strips holes. I asked when the installers would be there and he said a few hours because they were finishing up another job. Friday afternoon came...no installers. A phone call said they were still at they other job, but would be there Saturday morning. Saturday, the demo man and arrived alone to finish the carpet removal and tack strip holes and move furniture including my bed. He said the installers would be there at noon. A phone call at noon said they weren't coming. My bed was apart and I had nowhere to sleep. I called Ray and he seemed upset at the delay and said he would take care of it. The installers showed up at 5 PM. They finished my bedroom, reassembled my bed and moved the bedroom furniture back. They said the would be back Sunday to do the other two bedrooms and the walk-in closet. They came Sunday and finished the two bedrooms. However, they didn't have enough material to finish the closet nor did they have the transition pieces between rooms, They would have to locate two more boxes of material and come back. The following week was Thanksgiving but they did show up the Friday after Thanksgiving and finished the job. They finished 8 days after the original scheduled installation. My schedule was very flexible but my time is not. Nothing worse than waiting for someone to show up and when they don't show up, it wastes my time. The quality of the installation was excellent. Once they were done, everything looked great. They cleaned up everything and took all the removed materials away, put all the furniture back and left me with an extra box of material. They walked me through all the rooms and explained how to care for my new floors. All in all, I was very happy with Ray and the quality of the installation. The scheduling needs some work.

I really appreciated that Joe and Josh brought the carpet samples to my house and we could see them in our bedroom. The installer Tyler was really neat and efficient. He removed and hauled away all of our laminate and then installed the carpet by himself and in less than 8 hours. We have very plush carpet for our master bedroom and it feels so nice!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

  • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
  • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
  • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
  • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
  • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.
