Jeremy was the BEST ... on Thumbtack he is labeled as a handyman but he literally can do anything. He was on time, professional and ended up doing all kinds of things when we moved in (installed 8 ceiling fans - some very high, hung heavy items on walls, moved light sconce/electrical box locations) and he was so fast and efficient. We had lots of different contractors here and he actually helped them out on occasion. So great to work with and a great economical choice. Highly recommend.

John was right on time, extremely efficient and knew exactly what to do. He is extremely pleasant as well as knowledgeable. He removed a 90 inch bathroom vanity, with top, and unhooked all necessary water lines and hauled away all the material for the quoted price, which was extremely reasonable. I was so impressed by his knowledge and abilities that I am going to have him complete other projects in my home. I would highly recommend John Ausema for ant project.

I was so pleased with Lane. The job I hired him to do was not as big as I was told by two previous contractors. He was thorough and took the time to make sure the job was done right the first time. The quality of his work was excellent. He explained what needed to be replaced and why and answered all of my questions. I would definately hire him again if the opportunity presented itself.

Dave was on time and on budget, This means everything! His work was quality and he is very professional. Responds quickly when texted or called. There is nothing worse than not having communication with contactors during a project. Arrived to look at job and started within a few days and was there until finished. As the owner and the person who bid the job he was also the person on the job every day with his crew. I would highly recommend him, being a superintendent for a mechanical contractor I don't just say things like this unless deserved.

I have a 2000 SQ house that was in a desperate need of paint. Nick was professional and got the job done and got it done right. I have seen a lot of paint jobs on houses that the color is weird or the way the painting was done but this was a great job. He worked well with the other contractors that were working on my house and they said that they liked working with him also. For any other painting job that I have I will ask Nick to do the work and I will be recommending him to anyone that needs painting work done.

Larry Boning has done work for me for the last 2 decades. He has done carpentry work on my house making it better than new. He has done needed repairs, painted, and has ramrodded the addition of almost 1000 extra square footage to my house. The addition entailed the construction, electrical, and everything needed to make a safe quiet living area that added nicely to my home. All permits and work were done to city inspection and approval, as well as my own. He was professional in his work, attitude, and manner. I can not say enough about the man and his work. He is a man I trust and do highly recommend.

George is the most honest contractor I have ever met. He came by to give us a quote for a new roof and told us we do not need one. We were prepared to purchase a roof so this is a pleasant surprise. I'm a realtor and will be recommending George to my clients. Thanks George for being a good honest person!

I never write reviews, but I made an exception because I am very happy with the end result! Patrick mounted a tv on a brick fireplace and did an amazing job. He was very kind and knowledgeable from the first time we had contact. He was very precise and went over every detail and communicated with us about every step. He was very clean with his installation process and took the time to cover surrounding areas with plastic to avoid a mess of brick dust as he drilled. All of this happened even with a curious two year old in the home! I definitely recommend hiring him. I have saved his number for any future projects in my home. He's a keeper!

Luke and his team greatly exceeded our expectations, we will definitely hire him again for various jobs we need to be done. We had Luke install three sets of French doors at our home. He made the process incredibly easy by handling the purchase and delivery of doors and hardware along with the removal of the old ones. He and his team were able to get all three sets installed in one day despite some of the worst weather we’ve had in AZ. Their work ethic is top notch, and they’re very good at their craft.

I had a severe windstorm bring down a side Arbor on my home a few weeks ago, I was contacted by Alfredo a General Contractor through the Thumbnail Site in regards to an estimate to replace it. At that time I found out that the Arbor was improperly constructed, and the wood was severely rotten all the way through. Alfredo, and one of his crew members (Evan) provided Outstanding Customer Care to me and to my home. He provided me with a fair and honest estimate with all the labor and material cost included. With no hidden charges later to add on. I watch him and his crew member, take down and replace my Arbor with astonishing accuracy, to the exact measure. I watch Alfredo do math calculation in his head for this project like Einstein would have done. He raised the height of the Arbor to its proper height, attaching it to the fascia board in the proper manner, and not at the lowest elevation that it was originally in, and attached to my home. And wow what a difference it made to the side of my home. It is aestheticly pleasing, not only from the garden view, but from the street as well. Matching the design of my home perfectly! His Customer Care was above reproach, and not as I have dealt with less than honest and caring General Contractors over the years in this 1958 Vintage Home. I am so pleased and impressed with his services that I now plan to have him replace and repair a damaged Pavilion Deck that a so called general contractor that I hired last year to repair my Pavilion deck at that time, who used improper materials, measures, and calculations reparing it, that I fell through its flooring in early spring. I would highly recommend Alfredo and his Company to my neighbors, family, and friends... And I have every intention of doing so, as well as keeping his Business Card, well in hand! Thank You Alfredo, and your crew member. I have nothing negative to say in regards to this General Contractor! Only Praise. I'm adding the damage pictures now and will add the finish Arbor once its painted on Saturday.

I recently hired Hughes Construction to handle a multi faceted repair project for a home that is up for rental. Jeffrey Hughes went over every room with me, discussing what repairs were needed and then gave me his budget for the labor. He went with me to choose the necessary materials. The project was completed on time and to my satisfaction ! I would recommend Hughes Construction to anyone requiring good work at a fair price!

We had Skygreen Construction build a cement walkway in our backyard from our back patio to our new storage shed. They did an excellent job. I asked them to be certain and make it level and smooth as my wife has a difficult time walking. They came thru with flying colors. Both my wife and I are very pleased with the work and professionalism displayed by them. Also the price was very reasonable, and was considerably less than the other contractors we interviewed. Thank you for the good work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
