Doug did an excellent job. He was professional with his attention to detail and patient with me as I continued to add tasks to the job. He painted our garage doors/trim and shutters after repairing them and restoring them to good working order. He also recaulked our entire master bathroom, straightened out and tightened all the kitchen cupboards as well as did some drywall repair and hung curtain rods. I would recommend him to anyone in need and most definitely hire in the future. Oh, and he also fixed the striping on the bottom of our door going to/from the garage. He took it off the hinges and did it right by ensuring it was stapled onto the door (wasn't done by our homebuilder).

Overall, Ben did a great job painting my kitchen cabinets. He was fairly priced, prompt with his time, and did a good job with the project. The only remark I'll make, is the amount of paint spots left to clean up on the floor, counters, and stove. Not a big deal in comparison to the work he did. I would hire again for another project.

In a nutshell, David was awesome through out the project. He painted my home's interior, exterior and cabinets. He also did some back splash work for me. Overall, I'd say 4.5 stars but since we can't give half stars, I decided to round up because of how flexible and easy David was to work with. Professionalism and value were top notch for me. Where I would like to see David and team improve are the little things. This is my first time doing such a large project and maybe I'm a perfectionist but there were little areas where I would have liked to see a little better attention to detail. For example, more over-spray in some areas than I would have liked (although in most spots, if I told David, his team would fix). Another example is the grout in the subway backsplash isn't as clean as I would have expected (I've been able to do some minor cleanups myself). Other than that, David and team were amazing, fast and easy. Keeping in mind that no business is perfect, I'd certainly do business with Time4LSM again due to the great customer service, trust worthiness and great quality for the cost.

Ernie went above and beyond to complete a cabinet project for us that involved removing a section of cabinet and adding a pantry. Sounds easy, but everyone else we talked to passed on the project. Ernie took it on and it looks great. It seamlessly matches the rest of our cabinets. We're happy he's such a perfectionist!

Very responsive and timely with first contact and assessment of what I wanted. He made several suggestions that improved on my ideas. He was able to accommodate a quick start date which meant I could enjoy my new cabinets sooner than alternate choices. I made several changes during the process which he accommodated with ease and a good attitude. In addition to the kitchen, my project included a pantry, a bathroom closet, a vanity/desk area and a built in bedroom dresser with cabinets. One of his most important characteristics was his commitment to quality, even when it meant more work for him. My home was 30 years old and presented some real challenges. All his drawers were dovetailed and provided full extension and the cabinets door had soft close feature. My husband and I are very happy with the finished product and would recommend him to anyone wanting custom woodwork. It is nice to work with a craftsman that is honest and trustworthy. Our home is now not only lovely to look at but more comfortable and functional to live in. We look forward to years of enjoyment in our "renewed" home.

Sam did an awesome job of installing cabinet door handles on about 20 cabinets and 10 drawers in our kitchen. He was communicative, efficient and very precise with his work. He made sure to ask how I wanted things and didn't just assume & he made sure to point out any irregularities the cabinets had. He also made a quick trip to Home Depot when he realized I didn't have the right screws we needed. I would highly recommend! I'm very picky & Sam exceeded my expectation. Thank you again Sam!

James was very responsive to our request for a bid. We agreed on the work to be done and he was very prompt to come back for the install with his helper Dave. They had to retro fit two areas which is more difficult than new work. They installed the cabinets in a timely fashion and cleaned up after their work. Cabinets look great! Very pleased with their work!

We have a rental property that was outdated. We hired Chromatic Coatings to restain the kitchen cabinets and do a countertop stone coating. Ardi gave us a discounted price which we appreciated, but even better we were able to rent our unit for extra money each month. Since then we have recommended him to friends as well who are very happy with the work that chromatic coatings has done for them. Highly recommend this company!

We had Orange Dragon refinish all our kitchen cabinets, doors and drawers; cabinets including drawers and doors in three bathrooms; two office cabinets and our front door. The workmanship was superb. I never liked the cabinets when they were new. We had them redone by someone else and we were not happy. Now they look terrific and very updated. We could not be happier. Not only is their work beyond reproach, they are great to work with, very trustworthy, prompt, and keep the work place very clean. We thought their prices were extremely fair. Ask Orange Dragon for pictures of the work they did in our home. We are very proud of it.

Mat took care of some remodeling that we did when we bought our house. His crew moved a wall, added crown molding to our cabinets and moved one cabinet to make them look custom, raised a ceiling and rerouted air vents, and painted our whole house, all cabinets, and our fireplace. Everything was perfect! Things were completed in a timely manner and the quality of work was great. It was so nice to only have one point of contact for all of our remodeling and not have to juggle phone numbers or when work was getting done. Mat was also great about communicating with us when things would be done, and if there were any delays and why. Overall a great experience, I would definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone looking to get remodeling done!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
