    He shows up looking like the comic book guy on the Simpsons. He treats the mac like a misbehaving dog. In sort order our printer is installed and we have been given a good introduction to our voice recognition software. We would call CD again. Prompt and skillful.

    My MacBook Pro crashed last Monday night and I do 90% of my job in front of a I was desparate to find someone who could help me. CD is a Certified Apple Technician, and allowed me to stay and watch as he diagnosed the issue. He went above and beyond once we realized it would be more cost efficient to buy a new or used computer vs trying to fix mine, by helping me search extensively for what would work with my budget. I would highly recommend him!

    I first contacted Macs R We after reading his suggestions & comments in the Arizona Mac Users Group. He sounded extremely knowledgeable about Apple products and also about wireless networks. This convinced me to hire him to set up my home network and my brand new Mac computer. I was extremely pleased with the results. Not only does he know his field thoroughly, he also has the ability to explain things to ordinary people in a way we can understand. In his business I think that's as valuable to his customers as his expertise. Macs has since helped me with a couple of other issues, and I always enjoy dealing with him. The bottom line is that I respect his expertise & trust his work to the highest degree.

    My iPad 2 arrived 10 days ago. Out of the box, it wouldn't connect with iTunes on my iMac! Apple help was no help except in making an appointment to the local Apple store (30 miles) where the cable was replaced. It still would not connect to iTunes at home. Called Apple iPad expert again, worked with him for several hours over two days. Nothing would work so it was back to the Apple store (30 miles) to exchange the iPad for a new one. Back at home, same problem. Called Apple iPad expert again and after more testing, he referred me to Apple iMac experts for more tests. The problem was determined to be in the iMac so Apple advised me to erase the hard drive and install system software plus all the updates. Then add back all the programs and files from backup, one at a time, until the iPad failed to connect. I could not begin to calculate the hours or days, this work would take so I posted a help needed email on the AMUG discussion line. Macs R We responded with a probable solution which took me all of 5 minutes to fix. My iPad is now happily talking with iTunes in the iMac. Will close with a final HATS OFF TO Macs R We for his spot on suggestion, thanks MACS!!!!! Harry

    I've been through a lot of MAC consultants over the years before finally finding Macs R We, and have found that not all are that knowledgeable of the Mac. I like Macs R We, because C.D. is probably the most knowledgeable person I have found, next to Steve Jobs himself.


What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Our housecall fee is $70 for the first hour or portion, with additional time prorated at $60/hour. Our shop (bench) rate is $40/hour for time directly spent on your unit (not time spent running unattended tests or software installations) with a $20 minimum. Telephone and remote service is $30/hour, with a $15 minimum monthly charge only in any month when these services are used (there is no repeating monthly charge). We are happy to provide service outside our normal service area for a trip charge that varies with distance. However, our telephone consultation and remote service offerings are available from anywhere in the US at no additional charge.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
All our Apple-Certified technicians train to stay up to date on best-practices repairs for new Apple products, as well as common problem syndromes and new service programs for older products. Certification is granted only after an examination for skills and knowledge.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Macs R We is run by an MIT-trained engineer with over 40 years in the computer industry as a systems programmer, network designer and operator, software manager, security analyst, quality and reliability engineer, technical sales professional, and airborne customer service guru for major computer manufacturers such as Honeywell (Multics) and Stratus Computer.
What types of customers have you worked with?
We get a lot of networking-related requests, including setup of wireless printers. When a home wireless network stops working, there's always a lot of finger-pointing from the cable or phone company, who often advise the subscriber to bring his machine into the Apple Store. This is useless advice, because the problem is almost always never in the computer, and even if it is, it's unlikely anyone will ever find it on a network that isn't YOUR network. These problems have to be solved on-site, by someone who understands your network as a whole. Other common jobs we perform include concept training (tutoring); configuring backup systems (including shared, networked systems for multiple machines); replacing faulty hard drives (and recovering the old data if possible); getting email, calendars, and other shared services running consistently across all your iDevices; and even helping people straighten out their Quicken bookkeeping!
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
We were hired via Thumbtack by a senior-living apartment complex with a centralized networking system serving the residents. They chronically had several residents unable to access the internet (though not always the same ones), and other consultants had not been able to correct the issue. Working with the complex's maintenance man, I determined that one or more of the roughly 100 apartments had a "rogue DHCP server" -- a home router wired-in backwards, such that it was supplying bogus addresses to other residents. I reconfigured the complex's network onto a little-used private IP range, then continuously pinged for the rogue router while disconnecting each apartment's cable for a second or two until we located it. We found two reverse-wired routers, visited those apartments, and corrected the residents' configurations. The complex has been running smoothly for months now.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Ask about their industry experience. Ask about their experience and expertise with the equipment YOU own. Ask about their rates. Ask how long they guarantee their repairs.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
The big secret is in this cartoon: My tongue is only partially in my cheek. Yes, there is a lot of education involved in becoming a computer industry professional, but fully half of what you do all day to help computer owners boils down to knowing how to find the meaningful clues. I solve a significant number of detail problems I have not previously encountered just by knowing how to search for other reports of the same problem, and then having the experience to weed out the sensible explanations and promising solutions from the voodoo and superstition.
