Dan seems like a very nice man. I felt that he was very knowledgeable and honest. I hired him to fix my furnace. It turns out my furnace is very old, and in a dangerous condition, and it will need to be replaced. I feel that I was given a fair quote to replace it, , but due to the fact that I am on a fixed income and unemployed, I cannot afford to have it fixed or replaced at this time. I did have a plumbing issue (low water pressure), and Dan fixed that for me, at a price that I felt I could afford. I will call him for the furnace once I am financially able to do so.

Loren was very professional and responsive from the start of the entire process. He called when he said would and showed when stated, very punctual. The job I had him bid on was one that he needed to physically see in order to give correct pricing. Although he was pretty spot on with the verbal quote given over the phone. After reviewing what my best options were he ran to get some parts that he would need to complete the job, returned and started right in. Thank you Loren for a job well done. You're a better man than I am climbing into an attic to run and install all the electrical needed for the ceiling fan you installed. Looking forward to using your services again in the future.

The a/c blower fun was running continuously and a/c was cycling between cold/heat (it was a gas package unit with the furnace included). Chris arrived the next day, on time, and called as he was on his way. Upon arrival, he was very personable and took time to explain what he was doing and why. He followed the basics and began with the thermostat, then up the wiring on the roof to the a/c. There he found that wires were shorting! Great find! Came down and showed us with pics and described the issue. He replaced the wiring and all is well. Total charge was $40 for the service call and $189 for thermostat control wire parts and labor! Very satisfied with his work as he provided pics of what the resultant wiring job looked like. Chris cares about the customer and will treat you as you want to be treated.

Arrived ontime. Very affordable. Throughly checked furnace for problems. We called him for a second opinion. Air tech heating and cooling said that we basically needed a new furnace($2500). Sam reviewed the notes from Air Tech prior to coming out. He said that the furnace could be fixed and the fix was very affordable, saved us over $2 thousand. We are very happy.

I hired Optimus for a new A/C install on one of my rental units, after receiving a total of 5 quotes. I will admit, I was a bit nervous about using him because he was not based out of Tucson, rather just outside of Phoenix, but that concern was quickly set aside when I met him during his evaluation of my property. Chris was not only the best price of all my quotes, he proved to be the most responsive, consistent and informative of all the companies I interviewed. I could tell Chris was a good diagnostician and had the ability to think out of the box offering reliable and reasonable solutions to the specific needs of my property. As a business owner, my expectations of any company I hire is that they respond to my calls within a reasonable amount of time, he exceeded that expectation. If I had a question, he answered it, if I had a concern, he addressed it and addressed it quickly. Chris had to make an adjustment to the ducting on my rental unit, the Price he quoted never changed, even though he had to travel back for the changes. I was so impressed with his workmanship, work ethic, professionalism, fair and Honest pricing I decided to add a second A/c unit on the other side of the duplex and then had him come to my home to look at my squeaky, ready to fall apart swap cooler. Once I received his quote, I decided to install my 1st personal AC unit with an AC condenser on the roof and a new Gas Furnace inside along with a fancy thermostat that I can control from work, I am very pleased with this set up. I have entered into additional contract work with Chris and hired him to do maintenance work on a couple of other rentals that I own with older A/c units; clean the coils and assist with problematic water damage due to clogged tubing to include an emergency roof patch. I have referred Chris to several of my friends, they were so happy with his work, they referred him to several of their friends. I highly recommend using Optimus Mechanical, Chris Pointer for all of you A/c needs. Thank you Satisfied customer, Anna

Eric arrived at our home within an hour of my call, assessed the problem, carefully explained to me and my wife what needed to be done, had all the parts necessary to make the repair on his truck and went to work. He is one of the nicest, pleasant people you'll ever meet. Very professional, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced. He cleaned up the work area when he was finished, and now our AC works like new. No one but Patriot Air Inc. will service my AC system. I am recommending them to all my friends and relatives. Thank you Eric for a job well done! You have earned my respect and any and all my AC business. A main, many thanks! Ed and Charlene

Working with Gerry, Grant, and the whole Cooling for Less team was absolutely amazing. Seriously, the experience exceeded my expectations in every way. Having the most competitive bid on the job was great, but their response was really unbelievable. How unbelievable? Well, I talked with Gerry first thing in the morning...Grant was at my building before 10:00 am, we struck a deal, and the team showed up to install a new heat pump unit...both roof and indoors, by 12:00, and were done by 5:30. Yes, the entire operation, done and done, start to finish, in a single day! These guys ROCK! Seriously, absolutely the best!

Mark beat out all the quotes from other competitors when I needed to replace my A/C units and all the hardware in my attic. He answered all of my questions and was quick in his installation. What other places quoted me as a multi-day job, he was able to finish in a day. His employees were also very good at not damaging my property as they squeezed these enormous units into my side yard and other items in my attic. My units have no only been working well since May, I've been saving huge amounts on my electricity bill. Thanks much!

Our experience with Efficient Air was great. Leon the salesman was very thorough answering all questions that we had. He scheduled our installation while we were still on our vacation. That was a super big plus. Joshua the installer showed up early in his time frame which was also awesome. Joshua walked us through the entire install and also answered all of our questions in great detail. We will definitely call these guys in the future. Very knowledgeable about what they are selling. Thanks Leon and Joshua.

I hired a master carpenter to hang and install a very custom offset pivot door, Micah filled that need for me. Micah is very competent is what he does, he's very willing to take feedback and work with the client on a variety of issues without having any type of negative attitude. He hung and installed the door to my liking, a few last minute hiccups happened and Micah turned his truck around immediately to address my concerns, when he finally left, I received the service that I paid for. I definitely recommend him for whatever project his skills can fill due to his professionalism, craftsmanship and steady mature demeanor. This project could not have turned out better, I have a 300lb door that I can open with the touch of a pinky and it's beautiful.

First hot day and i go to turn on the A/C for the first time and .... nothing! Found Air Force One on the internet & thought the name was cool. Lady on phone told me she wasn't sure if someone could come late 2day or early 2moro. She said she'd call me back in a few minutes.... ('Yeah, right! Talk to ya never... ,' i thought.) But she actually called back & said she'd rearranged the schedule for me & someone would be here in about an hour! it was about an hour and a half, but it's not like I'm complaining! There's nothing wrong with a company that sends a guy pretty much right out & fixes the problem in less than an hour and only charges $59! (it was something ridiculous - someone had turned a switch off in my attic .... talk about embarrassing! But, ya no what? That guy could've inflated the bill & i probably would've paid it without blinking an eye! These days, unfortunately, it's so surprising when someone doesn't try to rip you off!

    Northwind Construction

    New To Thumbtack

      About

Northwind Construction was established by Steven Swayze in 1990 as a residential home builder. The company is a Michigan based company and we specialize in residential construction. Northwind Construction has been known as a turnkey operation completing projects from start to finish. We are able to assist customers from start to finish including location searches, site development including earth work sewer and drain, water supply and utility installations. Some of the unique qualities of our business include the fact that we self-perform most of the work and have total control over any subcontracted trades. Customer satisfaction is our goal and we are willing to go the extra mile to develop and maintain quality relationships with our clients. On small projects, we generally self-perform all facets of the project; however, oftentimes in order to expedite work, we subcontract areas such as plumbing, Hvac work, drywall work, electrical, and data related systems. We take pride in our history of employing quality subcontractors. We personally guarantee their work and believe our clients should only have to deal with Northwind Construction with questions, repair, work, etc. We believe it is paramount that a client know who to look to in the event when changes are required or problems arise. After 24 years, our company is scaling down. Although we still take on the occasional full construction project, we have found a niche for contractors and tradesmen working on smaller projects. We believe there is a genuine need for professionals willing to take on smaller projects that are quite frankly overlooked oftentimes as troublesome or insignificant. We are willing and we look forward to assisting our clients with any construction related needs. We recognize the importance and sense or urgency our clients have concerning repairs and alterations. We feel that we are able to adapt to most situations and resolve issues in a timely fashion. The following is a small list of services provided: Room additions, door and window installations, custom tile work, cabinets and counter tops, interior and exterior paintings, concrete, block, brick, trim work, custom flooring lamination and true hardwoods, custom fireplace mantles, etc. The services listed cover only a small portion of our company skill set. From design to completion, we are there to assist our clients. We also offer construction management services because we feel there is a need for a system of checks and balances. Oftentimes, clients do not have the necessary skill sets to question quality and methods used by many contractors. Our goal and commitment to customer satisfaction guarantees quality work at fair prices.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

      • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
      • The temperature cannot be regulated.
      • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
      • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
      • The thermostat isn’t working.
      • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
