Kiran is an excellent educator. I don’t even have know where to begin with the amount of help he has given me throughout our tutoring sessions. Before I was tutored by Kiran, I was overwhelmed with all the entry exams for the ACT and SAT, I was not performing well on the math sections so my parents thought it would be best to get me a tutor. Kiran helped me set up a schedule of where we would meet every weekend. The whole month of August every weekend I would be tutored for around 10 hours. It seems like a lot of time putting into tutoring and a lot of hard work, but Kiran made it feel so easy. He set up lessons custom to my style of learning and went over every math formula until I understood and memorized it. He helped me push myself to my best ability, and eventually made math one of my favorite subjects. My ultimate goal was to score higher on my act Math, and Kiran helped me score 6 points higher on my math section. (Which is very difficult and rare to have that big of a jump in test scores). With the help of Kiran, my ACT score went up, I got into the University I planned on going to, and I received a Merit Scholarship from that University. The math Kiran taught me was specific to the ACT, however it has helped me so much more further than that. Such as in the classroom it’s so much more easier for me to understand and catch on to math, I am now able to comprehend problems and with the memorization of formulas I am able to test better. His teaching went beyond education, he helped me form confidence and valuing my education. He helped me realize that anything is possible as long as you work hard for it. His morals and teachings have motivated me and helped me reach my academic goal of going to my dream school on an academic scholarship.

My daughter always seemed to have panic attacks leading up to tests. I was desperate to find a way for her to be comfortable especially as SATs were coming up. All I can say is after a few weeks with the tutors and life coaches at Chelsea International Education, my daughter’s confidence level went up a lot. She was not only prepared to take her SATs but her core academic skills have improved tremendously, which has helped her with her AP exams. The fact that all of the Chelsea tutors are fully qualified teachers, I think makes a major difference and really sets them apart. It really is a quality service and I am very happy to recommend them to anyone.

Arielle helped my son achieve a 1340 on his SAT exam - almost a 200 point jump from the PSAT. She was extremely helpful in organizing my son so that he knew exactly how and what to study. This includes test-taking strategies and time-management. Arielle genuinely cared how my son performed on the test and followed up with him after the exam. We would definitely call her again for help with any standardized tests or essays (possibly for college applications :))

My daughter had a wonderful experience with Jayne. Jayne had tutored her in both SAT and ACT math over the past year. She made huge gains in her score and qualified for a merit scholarship because of it. Jayne's patience, kindness and teaching style made a huge difference. We had had students at ASU tutor her before but with Jayne she definitely felt motivated because she didn't want to let her down. Her encouragement did so much to push my daughter to persevere. So thankful we found her!

About

"Kyle C., I had the best math experience ever. You made me believe that math is fun. Thank you." -- Nathan Ledezma, Heritage Academy, Class of 2015 I offer outstanding and affordable math tutoring. As a recent high school graduate, I am well-acquainted with the struggles of students today. Employed as a special education tutor and an American history mentor for the last academic year, I have enjoyed lending a hand to dozens of students who need it most, and in the process, I have refined my teaching skills and gained valuable experience. One essential quality of any successful tutor is the ability to fully relate to his pupils; another is patience. Because I have epitomized both these traits, scholars and teachers alike have recognized me as an able and effective tutor. In high school, I was hailed by the faculty as the best student tutor on campus and recognized by my peers as the "Next Albert Einstein." When my classmates needed help with their work, mostly with math, I was happy to answer their questions with thoroughness and concision. Celebrating the improvements they have seen, multiple students took the time to thank me for my assistance. For example, Wyatt Bradsher, who is now studying computer science, told me, "You are the only reason my math grade is not failing. Having you [...] has really helped me learn." I realize that when mastering a new skill, knowing the answers is not enough; a student must understand the material and know how to properly apply it. When I tutor math, I use a variety of techniques to ensure that my students grasp the basic concepts behind each topic, depending on how the students prefer to learn. Some are visual learners, able to interpret diagrams and illustrations. Others are verbal learners, benefiting from spoken or written words rather than pictures and figures. Among my foremost objectives is recognizing how best to teach my students so that they can truly understand the concepts and confidently apply the skills. I specialize in all levels of math up to Calculus I including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. In addition, I am competent in SAT math, having scored a perfect 800 on the test just last summer. Math and major tests like the SAT can be extremely intimidating but with the right guidance, success is always within reach.

About

I've been teaching math for the past 15 years at the high school and college level. I like to make math fun and relevant to my students. I explain concepts in multiple ways to ensure that all learner types can access the information. I use a program that would allow tutoring to occur online in real time. We would be able to talk but the video would only show what I am writing during our tutoring session. I am currently the math curriculum coordinator for a local high school.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
