Been training for 5 weeks now - can't say my body doesn't ache and there aren't moments during my workouts I think "I can't believe I am actually paying for this torture!" But it's been worth it. The workouts are amazing. Each session/week it's different (I go twice a week and get full body in on the two days) so there is no repetition. I've learned so much of what I CAN do to push myself (and I've never wanted to do weights before...was content with cardio) and I'm already seeing results!!

At 45 years old, I came to realization that I needed to make a life change, including the decision to no longer drink alcohol. I then realized I needed an outlet to stay positive and with encouragement from my daughters, I was convinced to join a gym. best decision i could have ever made came when I signed up for a personal trainer, enter Derek Stone. Derek was very attentive to my goals, he laid out a plan for me to follow, which included weight training, cardio and nutrition. Within 3 months, my first goal to shed some weight was acheived, I lost 30 lbs! My next goal to tone up and increase muscle and strength was achieved within the next few months. At this point, i was feeling amazing and knew without Derek's knowledge, guidance, patience and encouragement, I would not have achieved this milestone in my life. Now 6 years later, i continue my quest for fitness and quality of life. If you are ready for a life chamge, I highly recommend Derek for providing personal training in fitness!! Thank you Derek!

I've been training with Elvira for several months. During our first meet, Elle took the measurements and asked all the meaningful questions to fully understand my fitness goals and discussed how she could help me. In our first contracts, i did cardio and strength training with her and i started to see the result of 'lean muscles' and that changed my view towards weight training. We had a lot of fun training together and learnt A LOT from her. I knew from the beginning She's not only a trainer but also a Nutritionist! But i was hesitant about following a meal plan during our first contract since i never feel like i'm over eating (which i was totally wrong!) As our first contracts towards the end, i'm completely happy with the results and decided to continue training with her, also i would like to try a meal plan for the first time in my life! To clear my concern, Elle let me talk to one of her clients directly after their session (thoughtful!) and i'm totally on board after that.. I was always joking with Elle and told everybody that's when THE MAGIC HAPPENS..Honestly I was never really a chubby girl and always in the healthy body shape category so i don't have unrealistic goals for losing tons of weight. But since i started the MEAL PLAN and really pay attention to what i put in my mouth. I started seeing changes faster than EVER. Not just me, my friends, colleagues and family (always skyping) started noticing the difference. My t shirts and pants are getting loose and trouble area not so trouble any more. I dropped 1.5-2 sizes on my jeans and getting people complimenting my collar bones and shoulders (which never happened before!). Here's to all the people don't believe in changing their eating habits like i used to: TRY THE MEAL PLAN. IT WORKS! The most important lesson i learnt is you can't out exercising a bad eating habits and you may not even realize you are eating badly until you started a right one and see the results yourself! Don't take my word just try it yourself. Elle's meal plan is not a crazy starving diet but a flexible tool. I eat differently on days i train with her, i can have occasional snacks and change up the meal a bit if i don't have something in my fridge. It's not that hard to follow and i'm not feeling hungry or bloated(important to me!). On my weight training, I was a total rookie beginner who cant even lift more than 10 pounds dumbbell till today i did weighted squats on Smith Machine up to 135 lbs! Right now I'm at the best shape in my life and all credits goes to Elvira!

He has great people skills.....easy to work with, patient, positive, & encouraging!

Great experience all around! Intro: I signed up for the TFW 8 Week Challenge. Shane helped me set goals for my weight loss and strength training, and even some personal goals to work on. He took my weight and body fat and measurements. Over the 8 weeks, my goal was to lose 5 lbs, but I lost 9 lbs! I definitely felt stronger and better about myself after the 8 weeks! Training: Shane is experienced and well-versed. The workouts were always changing (some day more cardio and conditioning, other days more weights and strength training). I felt he became "in tune" with me and knew the right amount of how hard to push me, yet not make me want to puke or anything too torturous haha. He was patient with my abilities and helped improve my form and technique wherever possible. Location: Right off the 101, which was convenient. Facility was always clean and cool! Great variety of equipment and options, which helped things from getting stale. Conclusion: 5 stars all around! I wish I wasn't moving to another state because I would've been happy to stay training with Shane at Ascension Training Systems. Thanks Shane!

Sierra has been a close friend of mine for a long time. We grew up together, but grew up and moved on to do different things in different parts of the world. One thing I knew about Sierra was that she was loyal and I would always be able to get a truthful answer out of her. So when I set out to get nutritional advice from her, I knew she would give it to me straight. For years I have been going to the gym 4-6 days a week, and spending way too much time doing what was easy for me (cardio). I wasn't getting anywhere with my fitness goals for a number of reasons, and Sierra pointed them all out to me honestly and immediately. Sierra designed a nutrition plan in unison with an exercise plan that I have been able to follow despite a busy work schedule and temptations of the current American food and drink culture. Just 5 weeks into my program I have seen significant gains all muscle groups and definition, as well as drops in my body fat percentage. I have also been able to stick with the nutrition plan, which further impacts my workouts. Sierra clearly explained just how crucial a proper nutrition plan is to reaching your fitness goals, and I'm living the evidence right now as I see improvement every single day.

Officially down 50 pounds in five months!!!!! I don't even know where to begin with these pictures. I don't recognize the person I had become. "Old Nick" sucked. I hated the way I looked and felt but I wasn't willing to do anything about it. My first reaction to seeing "Old Nick" had me feeling embarrassed. I think the worst part is I got so used to seeing myself that way that I knew no different. I lost sight of who I always strived to be and I became ok with the fact that I had given up. I have no one other than myself to blame for what I had done to my body. ---------------------------------- I've been working my butt off for the last few months and it took this comparison for me to actually see it. Sometimes I focus on how much further I want to go and lose sight of how far I've come. I finally feel proud of myself again and I can enter a room with real confidence. I've made goals for myself again and in about a month I'm feeling like I'll be successful. ----------------------------------- I wouldn't be where I am today without Frankie. Frankie has pushed me and challenged me from the first day I stepped into his gym. Frankie has an approach to training that I wish I could have found years ago. I've talked to Frankie about my uncertainties with whether or not I'll meet my goals and by the time we're done talking I have zero doubt. Having someone you've only known for five months believe in you more than you believe in yourself is the reason I keep going back. I haven't said it enough Frankie, so thank you. Thank you for putting up with me being "extra" 85% of the time. Considering where I started, this journey would have been damn near impossible without you. Here's to 40 more pounds!!! ------------------------------ If you hadn't noticed I can't say enough good things about 1st Place Fit. I started 365gym in June 2015 after years of thinking I could lose weight on my own. Jason set me up on a meal plan that was both easy to follow and allowed me to still eat foods that I enjoy. Every time I step foot in the gym, Jason challenges me and pushes me to do the workout, to lift the weight, to do the cardio. He holds his clients accountable for their success and their setbacks. He is there with you every step of the way. He is your biggest supporter! I am grateful to be able to work out with the guidance of such a dedicated trainer!!

Eric is the best trainer and coach there is! When I think I’ve hit my limit, he pushes me and shows me otherwise and that our bodies set the limits not our minds. He has a great attitude, and makes working out fun for me! I have so much more confidence when it comes to lifting just a little heavier than the last time or even stepping up my cardio game because he’s right there cheering me on. Thanks Eric! ❤️

“I have been training with Greg since 2011 and I believe he is one of most knowledgeable and committed trainers around. Greg is extremely punctual, always set up and ready to start training with a workout plan, and mixes up every single workout so you never get bored! I workout three times a week with Greg in both small group and one-on-one sessions and every workout is challenging, and some how fun ! The cardio kickboxing is a great workout too! I truly enjoy working out with Greg (and all my small group workout buddies) and would recommend Greg to anyone looking to improve their fitness.” – Annette Galloway

I am a 74 year old female who has worked out with Mr. Morris for 18 years. When I look at other women my age and younger I realize what a good job he does. You receive personal attention and are challenged to be better each week. My personal regimen is 30 minutes 3 times a week plus cardio. I am strong, healthy and feel good about the way I look. J C also creates a comfortable atmosphere at the gym. For me it is fun as well as very professional.

Well, I have been training at Mike's facility for 2 1/2 years now. By following Mike's strenght training, cardio and diet programs, you can be transformed into the best shape of your adult life. Plus, it's great to work-out at a private place where you don't have to park miles away and compete with hoardes of people for equipment and space.

Working with Rivak as my personal fitness trainer has been the best personal health decision I have made in decades. He developed a tailored program for me based on my health goals and physical condition (including a detailed review of lab results from my last physical) and keeps me focused on actions required to meet my health and fitness goals. In one year I lost 6 inches from my waist and saw huge strength and cardio/endurance gains. Reliable, knowledgeable, focused and enthusiastic, he's an amazing personal trainer.

He is professional, consistent and uses proper form for making sure you're protected from injury. He is personable and is the only trainer I know who also spends time stretching you during your scheduled time. I have learned a lot from him. He helps hold you accountable for diet by keeping a diet journal, as well as a cardio journal to help you on track. The nutritional consulting works great for each individual body type and gender. He is top quality for a trainer.

I met Geoff a few months ago right around the time I was going to buckle down and lose weight with no excuses. At the time I was 250 lbs. and was given a *very stern* warning by my physician that if I didn't lose weight it would severely impact my health. I started on my own with a diet program and lost approximately 10 lbs. After consulting with Geoff about his personal training service, I signed up immediately because his prices are very reasonable. I began working with Geoff twice a week doing floor exercises, using cardio equipment and weightlifting. My weight loss results began to improve remarkably. After working with Geoff for a few months, I am now approx. 217 lbs down from 250 lbs. My ultimate goal is 125 lbs. and I am looking forward to achieving that goal with Geoff. Geoff is friendly, encouraging, engaging, professional and courteous. I am thankful to be working with him and will continue to do so.

Tony helped me train for a fitness show by getting better muscle definition. He was a fabulous supporter and helped me with nutritional planning throughout my fitness show preparation. The nutritional tips I learned during this time, I have been able to use in my everyday life. His intense cardio & weight training routines were challenging but he made them fun & I felt great after a workout! I highly recommend Tony because he was able to help me surpass my personal goals.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
