This guy knows what he's doing. Journeyman Services is my go-to for any remodel work I do on my home. Mr. Kern has exceptional attention to detail and has done an outstanding job on various projects around the house including drywall work, gas line installation, electrical line installation. and concrete cutting. I would recommend him for any project that needs done, and I have. He provides excellent work at a fair price and he truly cares about his projects.

I selected Ms Prater after interviewing 3 other designers or design firms because after our first meeting she was able to sense my needs and wants. Right away, I knew i was in good hands. Her rate was more than fair, she uses her time wisely and her professional connections are endless. The end result is so much more than I ever imagined. Our project was just under $100,000. The whole family enjoys the living spaces much more than before and I plan to use her services again in the future.

Ali is a true professional! He and his crews totally remodeled a 2-bathroom, 2-bedroom pool house. He listens to his clients about what they wish to achieve, makes good suggestions, expertly designs a plan and executes the plan successfully and timely. He does not push his own agenda like so many architects and contractors. The passion Ali has for his work makes him an ideal partner in building and renovations.

My wife and I had Marcello draw our plans for our addition for a master bedroom and a carport build. Marcello was wonderful, he listened to our ideas and was able to realize them on paper and took the time to see them trough the plan approval process with the city. He is so very nice and detailed, which made a very relaxed transaction from the initial plan to the approved plans from the city. If I was ever to need another set of plans created or anyone of my friends or family, I wouldn't hesitate to call on him again.

We hired Gary to draw the plans for our poolhouse/guesthouse. I already had a good idea of what I wanted, but Gary made some really great suggestions and had ideas that made the project so much better. He saw the style that I liked by being in my home and was able to quickly throw out ideas for the poolhouse that would compliment the existing house and my style. He worked with the City of Phoenix to fulfill the permit requirements and kept me up to date the entire time. The project is almost complete now and it looks great. I'm grateful for the suggestions he made. He is very creative and easy to work with. Not only is Gary great at what he does, but he's a pleasure to work with and be around. I would definitely recommend Gary and would hire him again if I had another project! Alayna D Scottsdale, AZ

Hiring Brian to master plan our property was, hands-down, the best decision we made after purchasing our new home. On our other properties, we've often brought in landscape companies and contractors to assess our space, prepare a design, and bid accordingly. As a highly-sought after design professional, Brian afforded us a far less stressful, more cost-effective method to approaching our new project. He worked with us through conception of the project and initial ideas, and helped manage the way forward into construction of our dream yard! Rather than merely preparing a design for us, Brian presented us with 3 totally unique alternatives for both our front and backyards! From this conceptualization stage we were able to tell him what we liked about the various ideas, and he continued to refine the overall design. His impressive drawings ultimately gave us the insight, knowledge, and detail needed to receive competitive bids from a multitude of landscape companies, pool builders, and contractors on a design that we helped to shape! From involving us in critical design decisions along the way, to streamlining review of contractors and bids, his industry knowledge and the incredible process he lined-out for us as home owners was absolutely invaluable! Beyond this, the creativity that he brought to the table was unmatched! From our amazing lagoon-like swim-up bar and sunken culinary space to our indoor-outdoor living room and incredible chess-board water feature, there were so many aspects of our yard that we would not be enjoying today without his incredible ideas! Brian's creativity, professionalism, and passion behind the services he provides are beyond reproach. An extremely pleasant person to work with; ultra-detail-oriented; and super mindful of his client's budget, time frame, and dreams; Brian is a rare find in the entrepreneurial world! He is truly dedicated to creating spaces that are absolutely perfect for his client! We could not love our out-of-doors paradise more!

I needed assistance with a CAD drawing and did not want to purchase the expensive software. The time it would take to learn the software would have also made it difficult to complete my project in a timely manner. I met with Roman and discussed my project with him. He is very knowledgeable with the CAD software and the building industry. My client needed multiple edits to the drawing to accommodate their personal changes and Roman did a wonderful job with each and every revision. He is my go-to for all my CAD detail drawings from this point forward!

I just hired Monica and Michelle to help with space planning and design and they are currently working on our drawings. We are still early in the project. So far though, I can't say enough good about them! They have connected me some reputable contractors and they have really eased my mind about this undertaking. They are the consummate professionals and just great people who I feel comfortable guiding me through this project!!!!

I did not choose Michael for my small project as it was a matter of minutes before that I had chosen another, earlier bid. However, Michael was the only one that took the time to prepare a thorough explanation of what needed to be done and sent it with his bid. He even scouted what year my house was likely built and the kind of construction likely used, and included drawings of what the final job would look like. I was very impressed by how detailed he thought about my problem, site unseen. I would bet that he would approach any job with that level of detail and commitment, and won't hesitate to call on him for future work.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
