Introduction: NOTE: I am located in Scottsdale, AZ, and I do not travel to students. As long as COVID is still such a big part of everyday life, this will not change. I am willing to have students in my home studio, provided that students agree to meet the same CDC COVID guidelines to which I've agreed. My love of sewing and the needle-arts grew out of watching my Mom, and I began hand-sewing and crocheting at 8. After moving to the west coast, I found that I could take my skills and passions to a whole new level with time spent in Fashion Design school, where I earned my BFA in Fashion Design. The move to Phoenix opened the door to my discovery of teaching, a surprise, a delight, the ultimate expression of my love of all things fiber and textiles. With over 25 years of classroom teaching experience in apparel and textiles, I bring a diverse set of sewing, needle arts and teaching skills. I will work with students in exploring their personal interests, in a variety of subject areas, including: Sewing - all levels from beginner to advanced, as well as Tailoring, Couture, and Costume Construction. Computer-Assisted Fashion Design using Adobe Illustrator - Students learn to create croquis, flats, floats, and fashion poses, to plan a line or collection, to create textile designs and repeats, to render fabrics on the fashion pose, and to build a portfolio of their work. Patternmaking - all areas of Patternmaking including Drafting, Draping, Flat Patternmaking, and Computer-Assisted Patternmaking. Vintage pattern use - working with patterns that pre-date printed patterns, with patterns that were not made for current figures, with patterns for which sizes are limited or difficult to find. Pattern Grading - because sometimes you just need a size that you cannot find, when working with commercial patterns; and because your custom-made patterns might do well if you can offer them in more than one size. Surface Design - tie-dye, batik, silk-painting, screen-printing, block-printing, fabric painting. Needlework - hand or machine embroidery, tambour hook embroidery and beading, machine-applied beadwork, applique, trapunto, and many other varieties of embellishment. Pattern Alteration and Fit Custom Dress Forms Textiles - the information you need to make good fabric choices for your projects. Rob M.
I am a new sewer and have a new machine and a mission to sew replacement slings for sun soaked sling back chairs. Mind you, I have not touched a sewing machine in decades. She met with me over a video conference and was able to see me clearly and address the myriad things I was doing wrong. From tension, to not putting the foot down, to not engaging the feed dogs properly, to misalignment of the needle. She sees all but gives calm instruction and she is incredibly knowledgeable. What I learned is that this journey is not so hard with a great teacher. She is that and then some. I am now sewing easily and gaining confidence with each stitch.
