Jeremy was the BEST ... on Thumbtack he is labeled as a handyman but he literally can do anything. He was on time, professional and ended up doing all kinds of things when we moved in (installed 8 ceiling fans - some very high, hung heavy items on walls, moved light sconce/electrical box locations) and he was so fast and efficient. We had lots of different contractors here and he actually helped them out on occasion. So great to work with and a great economical choice. Highly recommend.

I hired Charles to replace a RO filtration system, a garbage disposal, as well as change out a bathroom faucet. He was very professional, punctual, seemed to know what he's doing. One of the piece on the new RO system was missing, he was quick to make adjustments using a part from the old system. He installed the garbage disposal with no issues, then quickly changed the faucet in the bathroom. He even changed my fill valve in the toilet for free! A good handyman is hard to come by, I will definitely use him again for future jobs. Thanks Charles!

I called Paul after another person did not show up to do the job. I told Paul that I was having a problem with my GFCI in my bathrooms. Instead of coming out and charging my a service fee, Paul walked me thru trouble shooting the problem over the phone and knew exactly what to do...and he didn't charge me a thing! I will definitely use PH Electrical again!

Mr. Lazea replaced a fiberglass shower in our bathroom with a tile one. He was very professional. The best part was that he and his crew finished much faster than we expected and we are very pleased with the results. We would hire him again.

Barry installed a new kitchen faucet and fixed the hot water shut off valve. Nice guy and easy to work with - I will definitely use him again. He saved me over $400. I had been given an estimate of $495 for this small job by The Sunny Plumber. I had been told that the hot water valve needed to be replaced because it was broken inside and could not be shut off. Barry applied WD40 and was able to shut it off. Obviously an honest man with common sense.

I recently had my roof replaced at my rental property. The owner Jack, at Phoenix Roofing and Remodeling, Inc. was very professional, gave me a good quote, was very responsive to my many questions and was great to work with. Throughout the process he sent pictures of the work being done. I have worked with many contractors in the past and by far Phoenix Roofing and Remodeling have been the best. I highly recommend them.

I had a severe windstorm bring down a side Arbor on my home a few weeks ago, I was contacted by Alfredo a General Contractor through the Thumbnail Site in regards to an estimate to replace it. At that time I found out that the Arbor was improperly constructed, and the wood was severely rotten all the way through. Alfredo, and one of his crew members (Evan) provided Outstanding Customer Care to me and to my home. He provided me with a fair and honest estimate with all the labor and material cost included. With no hidden charges later to add on. I watch him and his crew member, take down and replace my Arbor with astonishing accuracy, to the exact measure. I watch Alfredo do math calculation in his head for this project like Einstein would have done. He raised the height of the Arbor to its proper height, attaching it to the fascia board in the proper manner, and not at the lowest elevation that it was originally in, and attached to my home. And wow what a difference it made to the side of my home. It is aestheticly pleasing, not only from the garden view, but from the street as well. Matching the design of my home perfectly! His Customer Care was above reproach, and not as I have dealt with less than honest and caring General Contractors over the years in this 1958 Vintage Home. I am so pleased and impressed with his services that I now plan to have him replace and repair a damaged Pavilion Deck that a so called general contractor that I hired last year to repair my Pavilion deck at that time, who used improper materials, measures, and calculations reparing it, that I fell through its flooring in early spring. I would highly recommend Alfredo and his Company to my neighbors, family, and friends... And I have every intention of doing so, as well as keeping his Business Card, well in hand! Thank You Alfredo, and your crew member. I have nothing negative to say in regards to this General Contractor! Only Praise. I'm adding the damage pictures now and will add the finish Arbor once its painted on Saturday.

He beautifully installed a barn door in the bathroom, installed soft close hinges on the kitchen, put in an out door light, mounted a tv with electrical, and installed universal remotes on the ceiling fans. He did high quality work in a professional manner.

Alex re-tiled our master shower and guest bath. Did a great job at very reasonable rates. Took about a week of time which is what we expected. I was happy to be able to meet him locally at Floor and Decor and pick all the supplies out and see what really goes into the process. He explained things to me that helped me understand as I am an inquisitive person and want to learn. Other companies we got quotes from just wanted to pick out what they thought would look good, that's just not my preference. He also replaced one of the walls in the bathroom that was warped, and installed a new toilet and all new hardware/plumbing. The shower door had to be ordered so he said he will come back and install once it arrives. Said he will also help me install my new garage door opener.

Venus Homes recently remodeled two of my bathrooms, added an additional full bath, replaced all my plumbing, added a hallway, and tiled my entire house...in less than a month. Narsay was professional, punctual, and was precise in his project coordination. He was able to get a tile guy, electrician, plumber, and drywall guy all to work in perfect order to get the job done cleanly and quickly. The crew was respectful of my house and honest. I had to give them full access to my house while I was at work and nothing ever went missing or was used without my permission. (They never even touched something as small as the thermostat). The entire job was done quickly and well. The tile guy was amazing. His lines and cuts are as good as I've seen. Narsay was communicative and proactive in identifying the best way to make the changes I wanted. I had 3 bids for this project and Narsay was the most positive and enthusiastic of the three. He was genuinely excited and confident about this project. He followed through and made good on his word. There were no surprises or additional costs. Narsay did what he quoted and was reasonable and fair. Multiple friends have requested Narsay's number now that they have seen his work. I highly recommend Venus Homes for your project. I will add photos when I'm done putting in the right furniture and painting the walls. Rob

Jake, is great at his job. I would refer him to anyone who needs a great carpenter. Jake came into a project someone else did not finish and with no hesitation Jake got the job completed as required. Jake has great pricing as well it is right on target with the quality of work you get. I have already secured Jake for an upcoming project in 2 weeks, believe me when I say this is a great contractor and knowledgeable about what he does. I would and will hire him again and again as projects get started and completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
