Dave and his crew were quick efficient and did a great job doing a variety of tasks including painting, drywall repair and installing new baseboards. We’re very happy with the work and are actually booking them again to do our exterior.

I have a 2000 SQ house that was in a desperate need of paint. Nick was professional and got the job done and got it done right. I have seen a lot of paint jobs on houses that the color is weird or the way the painting was done but this was a great job. He worked well with the other contractors that were working on my house and they said that they liked working with him also. For any other painting job that I have I will ask Nick to do the work and I will be recommending him to anyone that needs painting work done.

Paul was going to install an exterior light fixture by the entry door. He called to let me know he would be 15 minutes late because of traffic... I totally understand that & appreciated his call! He is very professional, courteous & conscientious. The quality of his work is "top-notch." I would not hesitate to hire him again and have referred him to a friend of mine. Paul is an Electrician you can trust!

I requested a company to complete a small wall project for my home. I received a response in less than 24 hours and scheduled Hansel Construction to come to my home. Bob, the owner was prompt, friendly and walked me through the process. We had been struggling to get additional work done from another contractor regarding items around our pool. Bob indicated his team was able to do all of the work we were seeking and more. We spent the next hour identifying items and a price. His bid was below what we had been told was going to be the cost of the other company. We scheduled a time and his team went to work. We were on vacation during the entire process and each day Bob would call me directly with an update keep me aware of the work. When we got home we were blown away. Our whole project had been done in 1 week and it was PERFECT! He and his company did such a great job. The completed the wall, added decking for my pool, installed rocks around my entire property and left no trace of work. He even left the extra paint for the deck if we needed more. I could not be happier with Thumbtack and how it works and the Hansel Construction company. What great work!

I got a special deal from AAA for two hours of general contractor work from Global Prevention Services. We have a stucco wall that's about two feet high around a courtyard in front of our home that had a large crack in it, and two hours seemed about right for someone to fill in the crack and paint the wall. The man who came was eager to get the job done, gathered the filler and paint and went to work. Before he painted, he showed us the repaired seam and explained what he had to do since the crack was rather wide. He was competent, friendly and efficient, and if we need a contractor in the future, we won't hesitate to call Global Prevention Services.

I had a severe windstorm bring down a side Arbor on my home a few weeks ago, I was contacted by Alfredo a General Contractor through the Thumbnail Site in regards to an estimate to replace it. At that time I found out that the Arbor was improperly constructed, and the wood was severely rotten all the way through. Alfredo, and one of his crew members (Evan) provided Outstanding Customer Care to me and to my home. He provided me with a fair and honest estimate with all the labor and material cost included. With no hidden charges later to add on. I watch him and his crew member, take down and replace my Arbor with astonishing accuracy, to the exact measure. I watch Alfredo do math calculation in his head for this project like Einstein would have done. He raised the height of the Arbor to its proper height, attaching it to the fascia board in the proper manner, and not at the lowest elevation that it was originally in, and attached to my home. And wow what a difference it made to the side of my home. It is aestheticly pleasing, not only from the garden view, but from the street as well. Matching the design of my home perfectly! His Customer Care was above reproach, and not as I have dealt with less than honest and caring General Contractors over the years in this 1958 Vintage Home. I am so pleased and impressed with his services that I now plan to have him replace and repair a damaged Pavilion Deck that a so called general contractor that I hired last year to repair my Pavilion deck at that time, who used improper materials, measures, and calculations reparing it, that I fell through its flooring in early spring. I would highly recommend Alfredo and his Company to my neighbors, family, and friends... And I have every intention of doing so, as well as keeping his Business Card, well in hand! Thank You Alfredo, and your crew member. I have nothing negative to say in regards to this General Contractor! Only Praise. I'm adding the damage pictures now and will add the finish Arbor once its painted on Saturday.

Pacheco Stucco did a fabulous job repairing my stucco on a tall two story. We had some fairly big holes created by a woodpecker, as well as many other damaged areas on our recently purchased fixer upper. I was very grateful to find Pacheco Stucco and that they were able to take care of the problem so quickly. I will definitely be using them for any future stucco needs.

Dave has done many jobs for me personally and have referred him to may friends and business associates. Work is guaranteed and he will always do the right thing to ensure the job is 100% to your satisfaction. Some of the jobs he has done for me is electrical, roofing, plumbing, drywall & painting, flat screen hanging and kitchen remodel. With Dave it's one stop shopping! No need to have several contractors to complete a job because Dave does it all. I highly recommend Dave for any task you may have.

Amazing team workers. The job was suppose to take 2 days and they worked very hard to finish in one by working very long hours plus did some extras that I added on. I would hire them again for any paint/stucco work and would give their number out happily to family and friends. Thank you Luis and Gladys

Overall a really easy transaction. Carlos was able to put a 12' w x 8' h hole in our wall and the workmanship is wonderful, you would have thought it was there all along. I also has 1500 sq ft of Saltillo tile removed and new tile put in. Carlos was on time and so were his workers. The tile took a few days longer than we had anticipated but it looks great. The pricing was super fair and we managed to stay under budget. I will definitely use Dos Vigas again and would absolutely recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
