I have used Bruce to watch my dog Sara at least 5 times. Bruce always took good care of Sara and she enjoyed going to his home. They seemed to have a bond together. He fed her timely and played with her and I highly recommend Bruce for any type of dog services. David

We trained our dog, Dexter, with K9katelynn in the spring of 2011. He had aggression issues towards other dogs, some people and getting hard to control in general. This made of very sad b/c we feared that we wouldn't be able to do the stuff we had hoped to do with our dog. These include going to the dog park, hiking, camping and just generally taking him anywhere dogs are allowed. I'm happy to say that a year and a half later, Dexter, is exceeding our expectations of what we thought was possible and has become a great dog. After our 8 weeks w/ Tom, we con't his training everyday for 6 months and now incorporate it into our everyday life. We recently took him to San Deigo to play at the beach and go to Balboa Park. He did great and alot of strangers complimented us about how well behaved he was and how nice he walked on his leash. The training was expensive and incredibly time consuming but was worth it. We always viewed the cost as an investment in the lifestyle we wanted our dog and us to have and I'm excited to say we acheived this.

What an amazing experience to work with Elisa! With her guidance, we took our unruly 7 month old puppy to a well trained dog. We love to go for walks now with no pulling. Family gatherings are more enjoyable as there is no jumping. We look forward to lots of adventures with our fur-baby.

Kimberly came to my home to help me with my two dogs (puppy and older dog) that seemed to be not getting along. She was willing to do an assessment and she gave me amazing feedback as to dog behavior that I did not understand. She was great at interpreting the problem and offered a wonderful solution that is already starting to work. I would highly recommend Kimberly for dog training.

Our house was in great need of cleaning. Rosario and her family did an excellent job. I was especially please with the shine on my kitchen cupboards, and the shine of the sinks and shower doors in the bathrooms. I could tell they were a very experienced and professional team. The spirit of joy and the unity of their togetherness was very impressive. They not only clean well, they seem to be wonderful people. Jane

We have 2 dogs and a cat who needed care while we were out of town for a wedding. Our cat needs two medications, twice daily once being an insulin shot and the other being an oral medication. After speaking with Rachael we chose AZ Mama Bear Pet Care because they have experience with administering those types of medications. They did a great job. The pets seemed happy and well taken care of. We even got photos sent to us while we were away. We will definitely call them again if we need a pet sitter.

Prior to meeting Renee, I had dropped out of multiple training classes sponsored by other private trainers because my dog and I weren't confident about our work outside of the classroom. We successfully completed Renee's Basic Obedience class and went on to take her Class in the Park to strengthen the skills we learned with added distractions of people, bicycles, little league games etc. Her ability to lead the class in a relaxed manner and her willingness to provide support between classes was the key to our success. Her extensive experience allows her to provide alternative solutions in situations where a particular dog isn't responding to an exercise. She has knowledge of a multitude of dog breeds and knows some of the training challenges that can come up with certain breeds. One of my issues was walking my 100 lb. lab without being pulled all over the neighborhood. After using Renee's training methods, not only do I now enjoy walking my dog, but I have actually had people stop me and ask how I was able to get my dog to walk so well on a leash!

Brin has been the answer to our prayers. She is extraordinarily professional and always keeps us in the loop about what our little 3 legged canine is doing. Carl (our Husky-shepard) has some special needs that not anyone could deal with, but Brin has gone above and beyond to help him have a happy time without his Pup-parents around. Brin has been very flexible with her schedule helping to accommodate our ever changing schedules and has brought a friendly and professional presence to Carls life. Carl is always tail-a-wagging when she shows up because he knows he is in for a great time. You will find a great sitter that is passionate about animals and detail focused if you decide to go with Brin, She's great!

I love Brandy and Steve. They have paid very close attention to my two dogs, Charlie and Frankie. We came in with two hyper active working dogs that had little training but have picked up so much information in training class. I am trying to beg them to do a level 2 training class for my dogs to be in. I love how attentive they were before and after class with Frankie and Charlie. I also realized a lot of the work was to train me. They have trained me well. I spend 30 min a day with both of my dogs training them separately with all the tricks they taught me in there class. I would highly recommended this obedience class with Brandy and Steve. They are very reasonably priced as well as they answered my response to their services within minutes. They treat my dogs as there own and send out weekly emails regarding all the dogs in the class and what we need to work on. On the off hours of training Brandy answers my texts and sends me additional info regarding activities for working dogs that she thinks would be good for my babes. One week I didn’t have a second handler and she had her husband help me out. She’s a serious gem and moving forward I will only work with her. She’s passionate about what she does and understands dogs so well! Thanks Brandy!

Dianne from Waggin' Tails responded to my request for a dog trainer immediately. She was very professional from the beginning and taught us a lot about our dogs. She trained us as a family and since her training our family is much happier and all 3 of our dogs are getting along wonderfully. She has tons of experience with all different breeds and can turn any situation that arises into a training exercise. I highly recommend Waggin' Tails to anyone in need of a trainer.

Julie from Precious Pet Care has been caring for our dogs for about 3 years now. She is excellent! Initially we had a single dog who was over the age of 10 and just couldn't go to a kennel without major stress for all concerned. Enter Julie. She helped care for our beloved little girl for both short and long periods of time. We would always return to find our sweet pup happy and well cared for and our home in immaculate condition. As our pup neared the end of her life she had some medical issues that required anyone caring for her to go above and beyond. Julie was there and treated her with love and compassion and our dog was never the least bit stressed while left in her care. After a 9 month period we now have 2 new "old" dogs that we adopted last year We immediately contacted Julie when we needed a sitter. She has been out to take care of them several times and these pups love her as well. She was here just last week and was greeted with big tail wags and wet kisses. Initially I was unsure about a total stranger in my home with our first dog who was first and foremost a family member. This was even after a lengthy phone conversation and a face to face interview! Julie arrived for the interview promptly with references in hand and quickly bonded with our dog. It's hard to believe now that I felt that way as I now think of her as an extended member of the family. She's responsible, dependable and caring, I can't give her a high enough review!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
