Introduction: Phoenix-based cellist Matt Allen is quickly establishing himself as one of the leading young American cellists. Matt has won the gold medal in three of the world's most important competitions; the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition in Mexico, the Stulberg International String Competition in Michigan, and the Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition in Japan, where he also received the highest spectator vote count for the Audience Award. The Florida native began studying cello at the age of four with his father. After winning his first competition at the age of 8, he was introduced to the cello professor at Florida State University, the late Lubomir Georgiev. Mr. Georgiev, a prized student of the legendary cellist and teacher Janos Starker, took Matt on as a student immediately. After the passing of Mr. Georgiev, Matt resumed his studies with Greg Sauer. Matt also spent his high school summers at the Meadowmount School, studying with Hans Jorgen-Jensen. He gave his first solo performance with orchestra and solo recital at the age of 11. Embarking on a solo career with a commanding repertoire of over 20 concerti, Matt has been featured with a number of orchestras throughout the United States including the symphonies of Cincinnati, Midland(MI), LaGrange(GA), Tallahassee, Kalamazoo, Lexington(MI), Asheville, and El Paso. Concerto performances have also been with the Orquesta de Concurso de Carlos Prieto, Cobb Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, Transylvania Symphony Orchestra, the Trinity Chamber Players, State Hermitage Orchestra of Saint Petersburg, Russia and the Tokyo Philharmonic. Mr. Allen has already been featured on the stages of the world's most prominent venues including the Terrace Theater of Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center, Chicago's Cultural Center, Tokyo's Suntory Hall, and the Cleveland Orchestra's Severance Hall, performing Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante for a sold out audience and live broadcast on Cleveland's WCLV 104.9. At age 16, Matt made his international recording debut with David Popper's Hungarian Rhapsody alongside Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops for TELARC Records. Additionally, as a supplementary prize to receiving the Gold Medal at the Prieto International Competition, he will release a solo album on Urtext label. Further studies have been at the Kronberg Academy Cello Meisterkurse, Pinchas Zukerman's Young Artist Programme in Ottawa, Ravinia's Steans Institute, and Itzhak Perlman's Chamber Music Workshop, including close studies with Gary Hoffman, Janos Starker, Frans Helmerson, Tim Eddy, Ralph Kirshbaum, and Alisa Weilerstein. Matt has collaborated with Itzhak Perlman, Miriam Fried, Zuill Bailey, Don Weilerstein, Sergei Babayan, and members of the Cleveland, Cavani and Guarneri Quartets. Matt studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Dr. Melissa Kraut and as a Young Soloist at the Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson. Music is the language where nothing can be offensive and everything can be understood. Everything I do is to share my passion, whether on stage or by teaching.

Cello Lessons

Matt loves the cello and he is so patient with a total newcomer to the instrument! He also cares about detail and doesn't let virtual stop him from giving a great lesson.

Cello Lessons

I am so glad that I scheduled my first lesson with Matt. He was wonderful! I myself am a piano/cello teacher and it was so refreshing to have a formal cello lesson once again! Matt was able to see & hear me play and find where my weaknesses are so that I can go forward in my cello studies. Matt is extremely skilled and is able to share his knowledge and talent with ease which makes a good teacher. It is one thing to be able to perform and totally a different gift to teach!! I look forward to my next lesson -- I am so excited to get back into my cello studies -- Thank you Matt!

Cello Lessons

Matt has been nothing short of amazing. I initially chose him for his willingness to do in-person lessons when everyone else is still wanting to hide behind computer screens, but I had no idea what a jackpot I had actually found. He has been just incredible with my teen. From the moment they met, my son (who was super nervous) was put almost instantly at ease. Matt has connected with him, challenged him and motivated him beyond my expectations. He is also an amazing communicator and has helped this non-musical mama out tremendously when it comes to buying supplies and necessary items to support my son's passion for the cello. Matt is beyond professional and is an incredibly talented cellist with an extremely impressive resume. His rates are absolutely reasonable and I feel like he is worth every penny and more. I can't wait to watch my son continue to grow as a musician with Matt's dedication and guidance.

Cello Lessons

I started taking lessons with Matt at the beginning of this year. I was a beginning student to the cello and Matt did a great job starting me off with the basics and tailoring my lessons to meet my expectation and skill level as I have progressed. I have been learning a lot and he is encouraging and helps me be excited to learn new skills and pieces. Matt does an amazing job finding appropriate things for me to work on at my level and gives my multiple techniques to work on them. His knowledge of the cello and music is top level and he has exceeded my expectations for my lessons. If you take lessons with Matt prepare to learn a lot and be challenged at the appropriate level. You will not be disappointed with him!

Cello Lessons

Matt is a fabulous instructor. I’m a 30 year old total beginner student who has been taking lessons virtually from Matt for a few months. I have now learned a variety of simple songs, and possess a very basic understanding of playing the cello and reading music. This is an instrument that takes years to master, but every week Matt teaches me new songs or techniques. Without such a talented instructor, I would be totally lost on the minutiae of fine techniques which have now formed my foundation. Matt is not only an acclaimed cellist and doctoral music student, but he’s also friendly, patient, and quite personable. I would highly recommend his services to anyone of any age or experience level.

I began learning the cello at age 4. As I travelled more and more to perform, I came upon teaching opportunities in the masterclass and private lesson settings where I fell in love with guiding a student towards improving their craft at the cello.
