Bob and his helper arrive within the stated time frame and began taking down a dead male Mulberry tree. We had planted it in about 1975 after purchasing the home in 1974. Bob did an excellent job of cutting the tree back and then down. Before grinding the stump out he covered a near by window and put a plywood shield around the work area. They raked the sawdust up and left my yard neat and tidy. I will/would call them if I need more tree removal service.

I just moved into my home and had a 45-50' pine tree to cut down plus years of neglect with cacti and palms. Radley's Tree Service responded ASAP plus came in at a very reasonable price. On time, professional, true masters - and left my yard and my neighbors' yard cleaner than before they came. I had seen how many 5 stars this company had and was blown away. After using them, there is NO doubt in my mind why they continue to get 5 stars. Gave their business cards to neighbors who inquired about them - would totally recommend them.

Can't say enough good things about the service we received from Chris Martinez. He removed a tree that was very near to our house and trimmed up another tree in our yard that sorely needed it. The job took two days, but it was tough work. He did everything he said he would do to include blowing the dust off the roof and out of the yard. Once he and his partner were done you couldn't tell that one huge tree was cut down and another trimmed. The cleanup was fantastic! Really great work from an honest, hard-working team. Their prices are very fair, too. I would hire them again!

I called many companies and quotes were all across the board. One guy even quoted $800 and told me the stump needed to be removed. I found Brett on Thumbtack and he gave me a reasonable quote (no where near $800) and said we'd look at the stump when he got there and see if it needed to be removed and he told me upfront what additional cost that would be. When he arrived he said it didn't look like he'd have to and once he had the tree cut up he showed me how the stump had come up with the tree, so no additional cost. Honest. I like that!

The overall job went very well. I was impressed at how much Devin knows about trees. He was also very quick and works very hard! In fact, he went ahead of schedule it got it done! And he was very accessible with our budget, which blows the competition! There are a couple sticking points that could have gone better. Initial communication was a bit of a pain. We initially couldn't connect, and played a lot of phone tag. After connecting, he was very prompt in doing a free estimate, that was definitely a plus. Once we agreed on the day, he arrived without notice. Some people don't mind this, but I do because I like to plan ahead. We agreed to cut the tree to a certain height from the ground, but he left a couple feet higher than we agreed. He indicated that he had issues when cutting the tree, as there were nails in the tree. He also wanted to change the price a bit, because of damage to his machine. I would expect a tree company to anticipate these kind of things during a job, and as to the 4 foot stump, I guess I will have to work on that myself. Again, I want to reiterate, that Denvin is a hard worker, and seems like an upright guy. I would definitely call him again or refer him to someone else.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
