Having been a contractor and having worked with contractors over many years, I am very impressed with the work Rick did for me. I look for three things in a contractor: honesty, communication, and hustle. Price is important but not everything. When you get a contractor like Rick who walks his talk, gets back to you immediately, and actually wants to do a great job then you know you are getting your money’s worth. I know that Rick sounds too good to be true but he is. I had a pool that needed to be demolished and covered up. We ran into a few difficulities with the job that he immediately communicated to me. He figured out a way around the problems and the job got done. Rick is a top notch contractor and I would refer him without hesitation!

Larry's landscape did an excellent job on our backyard. He worked with us to create an inviting space where it is much easier to spend time and relax. Maintenance is also easier. He created hardscape with brick patios, two walkways, gravel beds, and improved our irrigation system with a pressure regulator and drip system. He also added low maintenance shrubs, an orange tree, reseeded our lawn and refurbished dying citrus trees. He was also on time and kept all appointments. We would highly recommend Larry for his design and landscape knowledge plus his willingness to modify and troubleshoot changes on the spot. Thank you.

I was very impressed with the work done by Silva General Contractors. They did the baseboards in a large area of my home for a very reasonable price. The three member crew was friendly and efficient. They matched the paint to what was in the house currently perfectly and the job came out nice. I would hire them again.

Nick was great and very responsive. He was very busy but was able to fit me in. He replaced two interior doors for me and did an outstanding job. The price was fantastic, I had gotten quote from other contractors for much higher prices. Also I paid a big box store to replace a door a few years back they charged me triple and the work was poor quality. I have already hire Nick on the spot for another job.

I used Thumbtack.com to hire a landscaping contractor to remove and add some plants and to install several tons of decomposed granite to my backyard. After meeting with several contractors and receiving bids I selected American/Desert Chrome Landscaping. They were not the low bidder but clearly understood what I wanted and communicated their plans to accomplish the task. They provided samples, technical support and expert advise on our project. They selected the best plans, made suggestions as to placement and installed the irrigation needed. They were prompt, workmanlike and cleaned up daily before they left the premises. We are extremely pleased with their work and would recommend them.

They completed a beautiful patio extension and turf install. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience from beginning to end. Will be looking to add some additional landscaping with them to finish the yard in the future.

Located out of town, working with Michael Espinoza, of Blue Mountain Renovations, made the flooring renovation process easy. Michael was willing to send pictures and videos of the project, made recommendations for additional repairs, and even managed sub-contractors to complete more than just the flooring. I will think of Blue Mountain Renovations for any future work that's needed.

Shawn was prepared and didn't try to over sell me, I was surprised when he said I didn't this or that when I asked. How refreshing. I certainly didn't over pay and his warranty is something many contractors simply don't offer.

I have used John and the crew at BST for several jobs and always come back. Professional, timely and first rate workmanship. As a general contractor, I rely on John's work to make me look good and he always delivers. Andy Seal owner: Cumberland Blue Construction

Josh and his helpers did a great job putting external foam board insulation and stucco on the cinder block casita I use for a home office. Prior to the job my AC couldn't get summer afternoon temps below 95, now I can keep it at a comfortable 75. Rare for a contractor, Josh always showed up when he said he would. He kept in close touch with me by phone or text, always letting me know when he would be there. He worked long hours in terrible heat. He was always friendly, positive, and thoughtful. He bid the job flat rate, and he put in more time and care than I expected -- no corner cutting. The project was complicated and neither of us had done a job just like this -- we were using poly ISO foam board covered with a base of cement stucco and a topcoat of acrylic stucco. I wanted the cement base to keep the woodpeckers from hammering into the foam board. Before Josh, I talked with another stucco contractor who was going to hammer concrete nails to fasten the foam board and wire lath to the cinder blocks. Aside possible issues with fracturing the cinder block, the nails would have transferred heat through the foam board. So we ended up using special plastic anchors I ordered from Amazon. Each of 300 anchors required a 5/16th inch hole to be drilled in the cinder block. Josh cheerfully did it this way, even though it increased the work, and the final result is solid and there was no loss in insulation due to bridging. Josh came back a couple days after I paid him to clean up the site. I'm more used to contractors disappearing when it comes time for clean up. All in all Josh was great to work with and gave excellent value for money. I've overseen many home renovation projects with many contractors, and Josh made it easy!

DD Kruse was prompt in responding to my call. Dean Kruse offered great solutions at a time when other contractors were hesitant to take on the job. Bathroom cabinetry had water damage and needed to be replaced. He took extra time to find matching cabinet doors and drawers, tile and specific light fixtures. He is extremely considerate and pleasant to work. The work was finished quickly and the bathroom looks stunning! My only suggestion is that there should be more attention to detail by the work crew who was a little messy.

Hired because i need a licensed / certified contractor to help with a few repairs. I had a short time frame to complete the job (selling). Great work, was able to trouble shoot the problem and complete the job during the limited requested time frame. Provided a detailed invoice! Only negative was late for appointment.

My experience with Ray, who owns Perfection Landscape, was awesome. We met and discussed what I wanted (new gazebo assembled and installed, new pavers, two new flower planters with water installed to them, electric to the gazebo, a new sprinkler system and new grass). From the very beginning Ray was professional, courteous, on time, and very attentive to my questions. He explained how he would mount the gazebo on footers so it will be very stable - I live in an area where micro-bursts are common in the summer months. He explained the work being done with every aspect of the job. I knew when the crews were going to be at my home and when they would finish each day. Ray's crews were as professional as he is. The project was completed in the time frame given to me by Ray. I have already referred Ray and Perfection Landscape to others in my neighborhood and will definitely continue to do so. Ray believes in detail and it shows in his work! Ray's pricing is very competitive with other contractors in the city. In closing I want to say that Ray is a "hands on" contractor. He doesn't just turn the crew loose. HE is a member of the crew doing the job. Thank you Ray for an excellent job!!

Hired to put up Christmas lights outside. Very professional and pleasant. Worked hard to untangle and ensure all lights worked. Talked to me about what would work best and what I preferred. Very pleased with this contractor. Lights look great. Would recommend highly and use them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
