“Thank you Kai for helping me feel good about my body again! Hiring you to train me was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.” – Jen M., 28, Newport Beach, CA
There’s a trend in the fitness world we’re all familiar with, though you may not know it actually has a name. It’s called being a January Joiner and a February Flaker. We all have the best intentions with our fitness regimes and healthy eating schemes, but it’s almost February and momentum is inevitably dying.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t change your ways. Here’s a secret no one tells you when you make your (come on, admit it) halfhearted New Years resolutions….
Not all new year’s weight loss goals fail
I’ve been a personal trainer for over a decade and I’ve seen people with goals all over the spectrum.
Jen started with me at Fitness By Kai in March 2013, with a goal to lose 30 pounds after too many failed attempts. After just two months together we saw a huge difference: Jen had already lost 10 pounds, 9 inches, two pant sizes and had really toned up. We were both in tears, that’s how happy we were. Before the end of the year (two months before her goal date), Jen hit her goal, having lost thirty pounds since her first session.
Jen says, “I can REALLY see a difference in my body. Despite being embarrassed at how much weight I gained over the years, I couldn’t be more proud of the weight I lost. I absolutely could NOT have had these results without Kai’s help.
So, how do you get Jen’s results without being a February Flaker?
Set Realistic Goals You Actually Believe You Can Accomplish
Change starts with small steps. That means START SMALL. You’ll find yourself slowly shifting into those lifestyle changes you so desperately want.
Setting and accomplishing small goals can help avoid “all or nothing” thinking that derails most people after January 1st. Didn’t meet your goal this week? Don’t throw in the towel. Have grace and compassion towards yourself and try harder the next week by making a plan of action. If your goals still seem out of reach, scale back a little. As long as you keep moving forward and remain active you will reach your goals.
Lose the Cookie-Cutter Approach
Jen chose me to re-sculpt her body because of my teaching style. Jen said, “Kai is not like the cheese ball cookie cutter trainers at Big Box Gyms who teach you about their machines so you can do the same workout over and over. Kai incorporates everything from TRX to Pilates to medicine ball workouts. No training session was the same. I learned a ton of exercises that were intense, burned like crazy, and I could do at home, which makes working out interesting, fun and – most importantly – convenient.”
Make a Commitment
“After almost a year and a half of going to a large gym, Insanity workouts and trying (what I thought was) my best at losing weight, I knew it was time for a serious change”, says Jen. “Setting up one-on-one personal training was the BEST DECISION EVER. I went all in and purchased Kai’s 36 session package and saw her twice a week. In addition to my appointments, Kai had me working out six days a week for an intense forty-five minutes each day. I learned the importance of eating six small meals – Kai gave me easy and healthy options I still use.”
