Jason and Carmen Pickering are a husband and wife team and they’re cleaning up on Thumbtack. They’ve doubled their monthly clientele and report 75 percent of the new jobs they land are a result of Thumbtack. Co-owners of JC Cleaning Services in Seattle, Washington, this hard working duo built a company that capitalized on their decades of cleaning and service strengths. Here’s how they became Top Pros on Thumbtack.
When did you join Thumbtack?
Jason did a web search on janitorial cleanings and Thumbtack caught his attention. He thought it would be a great fit for us as we were building our business. We started using Thumbtack in March 2015. It’s been a great asset for us.
What role does Thumbtack play in your business growth?
Thumbtack has been a great tool in helping our janitorial business become successful. We started using the website in 2015, the same year we started our business, and it planted a seed for us. Our business has been moving in the right direction with an enormous amount of growth. We’ve grown from having 25 clients a month to 45 clients a month. We currently credit Thumbtack with bringing in 75 percent of new jobs.
Our top strategies for business expansion are:
- Responding to clients in a timely manner once we have a quote
- Understanding how competitive it is with four other businesses vying for the same job
- Really understanding the client’s needs
- Giving a hundred and ten percent in all we do!

What do you wish you had known when you first started?
How much money it would cost to drum up business from some of these other marketing websites. As a small business owner starting out, if you don’t have the finances and resources in place, starting a business can get really costly. And it’s not just marketing, but having a web page built for your company and even knowing the right people to connect with in a networking aspect. All of it can be quite stressful, to say the least.
Do you have a special Thumbtack job experience to share?
Last year there was a large golf tournament here in Washington and we were hired to clean all the homes in a one block radius. Starting at 4:00am, the two of of us cleaned each home for approximately 2.5 hours. We had all the houses ready for the home owners to return back to their homes that day. It was just a great feeling knowing we were appreciated for the hard work we had done, not to mention meeting all the new people and listening to their stories about golf. I might add, neither me nor my husband knew anything about the sport before that!
How else do you market to your customers?
Other tools we use include business cards, Facebook, and putting out our flyers in local businesses that allow us to do so. We sub-contract with another big business in our field, we network in person, and also use word-of-mouth through family and friends.
