Story by John Guglielmelli
Both my parents were from farming families and became avid gardeners. As a kid, my practical dad planted plum and peach trees for us. Mom grew all kinds of flowers and I helped her tend to our 50 rose bushes. I learned most of what I know about gardening from my parents.
I’m also a painter and photographer and that sense of balance and composition serve me well in gardening. I seek to create park-like settings with points of interest like a lone persimmon tree in winter or a climbing rose. Containers that overflow with beauty. I want my customer’s gardens to always be a place of serenity, comfort and inspiration and even something simple like a yard clean-up reveals secret paths or previously-hidden lines that refresh the eye. Seasonal work means adding plants and pruning-back others, which creates a harmony between plants and flowers.
It’s exciting to lend a hand in someone’s garden and create a place that reflects their tastes and sensibilities.
I was born and raised in the Bay Area and have always marveled at the abundance and variety of natural beauty here. I spent my childhood hiking in the mountains where I studied nature’s designs and effortless perfection. Gardening in San Francisco is a privilege. I love this city.
California is a gardener’s dream. The weather and the natural landscape provide endless inspiration.
We have it all: ancient redwoods, vast beaches and crowded forests. From its rugged coastlines and chaparral to its twisted oaks and rolling foothills, I seek to emulate California’s effortless beauty throughout my work.
I started SFGardening on my bicycle in 1995. There was no other business for me — I feel and smell the earth, the sunshine and the wind. Every day I get to witness birds and cloudscapes. What makes me great at my job is my commitment to the client’s needs and wishes. I seek to translate their likes and dislikes into a beautiful garden space.
