Dirty carpet bringing you down? No need to throw it all away. Whether it’s pets, kids, or red wine gone wild—professional carpet cleaners will come to the rescue. Steve Toney of Toney’s Floor Care in Charlotte, North Carolina and Anthony Yacobozzi of Techniclean in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida – both highly rated carpet cleaners on Thumbtack – talk taking the dirt out of the rug.
What types of carpet services are out there?
Every company offers different services, but Toney’s Floor Care provides carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, ceramic tile and grout cleaning or sealing, automobile cleaning, drapes, dry cleaning, and more. Techniclean focuses on carpet cleaning, area rug cleaning, and upholstery cleaning.
What are the most common S.O.S. calls to carpet cleaners?
Pets are the number one culprit behind residential carpet cleaning calls, according to Steve. He’s a pet owner as well and can relate to the accidents and the unfortunate smells that our furry little friends can cause.
Aside from pets, daily traffic in and out of the house, the wear and tear of life, the messy circus that is young children, and just plain old accidents are other reasons clients call, shares Anthony.
How can clients prepare for best results and best use of the pro’s time?
Clear personal and fragile items before your carpet cleaner arrives, suggests Anthony. If you have a shelf full of rare porcelain figurines, either secure them firmly in place, or store them in another room. Vacuum all the carpets and upholstery that will be cleaned. Put the pets in the backyard. Keep the kids busy in another room or at the neighbor’s on a play date. Have your driveway cleared so the van can pull in. Turn on the air conditioner to facilitate the drying process. Pretty much whatever you can do to streamline the process, says Anthony, do it before the cleaners arrive. It saves you money and time, and means more time goes into the real matter at hand—getting your carpets cleaned.
Cleaners can often help with moving big furniture, adds Steve, so ask ahead of time if that’s an option if there’s a couch or bed you need to clean underneath of.
What is average cost per square foot for carpet cleaning?
In Charlotte, rates stand around 20 cents per square foot, while in Florida carpet cleaning rates range from 25-50 cents per square foot.
What’s the difference between cleaning rugs and carpets?
Rugs can be tougher because of the concentration of stains on them, explains Steve. Really dirty rugs require he bring them back to his shop to clean. Again, he says, the reason is mostly due to pets. He notes how many people have rescue dogs and how this can be a contributing factor as they acclimate to their new homes. He also shares how great it is so many people open their homes to rescue dogs.
How common are green cleaning options?
Both Techniclean and Toney’s Floor Care use green chemicals, so these two are already on board with the movement for a cleaner environment and non-toxic homes. Be sure to ask what type of cleaners your company will use if you have sensitivities or a personal interest in green products.
How long does it take for a standard room to clean and dry?
The project, the amount of space, and the room, rug, or upholstery being cleaned are the variables that determine work and dry time. Steve says most jobs take around 25 minutes to clean and 24 hours to completely dry. Anthony’s jobs usually range from 1-2 hours for cleaning time with drying times ranging 2-24 hours. If time is of the essence, chat with your pro beforehand to get an idea of work and dry times.
Any hot tips for readers to keep their carpets clean between professional cleanings?
There’s a lot you can do to keep your carpet so fresh and so clean. For one, make sure your shoes are clean, suggests Steve. Seems so simple, right? He also recommends avoiding over-the-counter spot treatments, as he says these can make stains permanent.
Vacuum daily (oh dang!), brush your upholstery weekly (have you thought about a housecleaning service yet?), opt for upholstery rugs for easier cleaning, and have carpets cleaned professionally every six months, recommends Anthony.
