The single most feared date of the year: April 15th. The day that thousands of Americans rush to post-mark or e-file their taxes on time for Uncle Sam’s accounting. Don’t want to tackle this on your own? Last year 35 million Americans had their taxes filed by a professional. And Thumbtack helped tens of thousands of individuals and couples find professional accountants to help file their returns, and along the way we learned some interesting facts:
Wisconsin, Tennessee and Illinois are model citizens for starting their taxes promptly! Our calculated “Procrastination Index” takes into account the number of residents who start early in the season (January and February) compared to those that get started in April, as well as how many requested a filing extension.
Kansas and Nevada had the highest proportion of tax-filers working on the extended file, while Indiana, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin had the fewest. And about those back-taxes…Florida, Nevada and Oregon were most likely to need help with three or more years of income tax filings! Yikes! Don’t worry, at Thumbtack, we know someone who can help.
Of course, if April 15th is really going to cut into your spring break schedule or if you’re still on hold with the IRS help line, you can request an extension to October 15th (though be careful of any penalties that may apply). An extra 6 months should give you plenty of time to get ‘er done, right? Well, from what we see, those extended-filers still wait until mid-September to find their accounting help.
Ok, so how about this year? How is 2015 shaping up for the IRS? Thousands of Americans have already started the search for a tax preparation professional on Thumbtack. And with 8 of 10 Americans set to get a refund back, why delay? Let us help you make April 15 less stressful this year.
