The holidays are coming and everyone loves a good cocktail to celebrate in style. With party season almost in full swing, we decided to look at which cities know how to throw the classiest parties by looking at which cities are most likely to have a professional bartender at their event.
Thousands of consumers request a bartender at their parties on Thumbtack every year so we looked at 159 of the largest metro areas across the U.S. and measured the number of requests for bartenders, relative to the population in that area. We then used these numbers to create the Thumbtack Classy Party Index. This index ranges from 0 to 100, with the cities requesting the most bartenders – and therefore throwing the classiest parties – closest to 100.
Here are the cities most likely to throw a classy party in 2015 and their Classy Party Index score:
Perhaps not surprisingly, the wine country destination of Santa Rosa/Sonoma was the leader in classy bartender-serviced parties (hello, wine tasting). Portland, Maine was a surprise strong second (although maybe not a surprise to fans of the area’s underappreciated dining and drinking scene) followed by Austin, Texas and Durham, North Carolina.
In fifth and sixth place, Monterey and Santa Cruz are again big wine regions, while party-goers in Athens, Georgia, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Little Rock, Arkansas and Asheville, North Carolina rounded out the rest of the list. (Fun fact about Athens: It also has the most bars per capita of any city in the country.)
Surprisingly, some of America’s most affluent urban areas were the least classy party throwers. San Francisco was only number 16 overall, New York was a distant 87 and Chicago came in at 102 out of 159.
