Thumbtack has a pay-per-quote model where professionals pay to send quotes to customers. Each quote costs anywhere between 2 to 9 credits, depending on the type of service the customer is looking for. Starting today, we’re making changes to the way that professionals, both new and existing, purchase credits on Thumbtack.
Here’s a breakdown: all new pros will be asked to purchase 10 quotes worth of credits when they’re ready to send their first quote. If your first quote costs 2 credits, you’ll be asked to purchase 20 credits. If your first quote costs 9 credits, you’ll be asked to buy 90 credits. You can then spend the credits on that first quote plus 9 future quotes. For existing pros, we’re no longer offering the ability to pay for individual credits on Thumbtack. From now on, we’re offering packages of 12, 24, or 60 credits for purchase.
We’re asking new pros to purchase 10 quotes worth of credits at the beginning to set a proper expectation for new pros on their chances of success.
Why ten? Because on average, our top pros are hired one in ten times they quote. The initial 10 quote package encourages new pros to really give Thumbtack a shot, and simply quoting once or twice is just not the most effective way for pros to see what Thumbtack can really do for them. Once that 10 quote pack is spent, pros can then choose to purchase packs of 12, 24, or 60 credits.
Why the removal of individual quotes? Purchasing credits one or two at a time is more expensive per credit (since there’s no bulk discount that way) and it involves more ongoing effort each time you want to send a quote. This means we were putting pros who didn’t buy packs at a serious disadvantage, which is something we never want to do. We’re always looking to help professionals find success on Thumbtack– when they succeed, we succeed.

We’ve received a ton of responses to this post, both in the comments below and via emails and calls from pros. Overall, the response to this announcement has been mixed- some pros prefer to buy credits one at a time, some only buy bulk credits, some don’t like the idea of pay-per-quote, and some think our pricing system is great just the way it is.
One thing that everyone–including us–can agree on is the timing of this announcement. It wasn’t good. We owe it to the businesses who use us every day to be open and transparent regarding our product changes, and we simply didn’t provide you with enough notice before we made this announcement.
We do appreciate your feedback (even the less than positive stuff), as it helps us better understand both what’s working for you and what’s not. We’ll continue to take a look at our pricing options, and work closely with pros and customers to refine them until they’re the best they can be.
