We’ve developed a communications plan that will provide more opportunities for you to give us feedback, provide more clarity about exactly what’s happening at Thumbtack, and give more useful information on how to make your business succeed.
There are so many opportunities for us to work together — here’s what we have planned so far for 2015, and some product changes we’d like your feedback on:

Our event in Washington, D.C. was such a roaring success that we want to do it again! This time we’re heading to Seattle and San Diego to meet Thumbtack pros in person. We’ll bring the people making the decisions at Thumbtack so they can share their vision for the future and answer your questions. So if you’re based in either of those two areas, stay tuned for an email from our with more details on how to attend. RSVPs for Seattle are open now so make sure to let us know if you’re coming.
Salt Lake City Office Hours
A year ago we opened up our Salt Lake City office and now have over 200 amazing team members working round the clock. If you’re based in the area, we’d love to see you on Tuesday April 28th from 6-7:30pm for our open house. Meet the team, share your feedback and get tips on building your business on Thumbtack. If you’d like to attend, email email@example.com.
Getting More Involved with Small Business
White House Event
In January we worked with staff from the White House and arranged for the Administrator of the Small Business Administration to keynote a roundtable with 60 of our most engaged pros from across the country, followed by an epic party where a few DJs cut up the dance floor. It was the largest gathering of Thumbtack pros ever and filled us with such joy and love for our pros. There’s so much we can learn from each other and we know this is just the beginning.
“My favorite moment was talking to a DJ at the reception and watching him submit a quote two different times.” — Jonathan Swanson
Women’s National Business Event
Also in November, we co-hosted with the National Women’s Business Council. A panel of four small business owners discussed obstacles faced by women in business and the tools available to overcome them. It was a packed house!
Small Business Policy Makers in Washington
While in DC, Thumbtack team members met with top lawmakers and small business organizations to share the results of the unique economic research you help make possible. These policymakers are keenly interested to learn more about what’s happening with small business owners. And by helping them better understand the environment, we can help make it better for all the entrepreneurs both on Thumbtack and off.
Marco went to the ARCSI 2014 Cleaning Convention
Our CEO, Marco, attended a week-long cleaning convention in Orlando, featuring educational and motivational talks, a trade-show, and networking events. He discovered that we have really passionate fans (he was asked by two people to take selfies with him!), but we also have a lot of people who still don’t really understand how Thumbtack works. We learned we need to be going to more of these events as they’re an incredible way to connect with savvy, motivated professionals while better understanding their needs.
New Thumbtack Features
You may have noticed a few changes around Thumbtack lately – some big, some small, all the result of emails you sent us and calls you made asking for improvements. Here are some of the changes we made:
“Share your project”
Customers can now share professional quotes with anyone! We know that certain big decisions (hiring a wedding photographer, contracting a plumber) are made with the input of a third party, which is why we now make it easy for customers to share the quotes they receive with friends and family. This is an added benefit to pros as we hope this makes the hiring process quicker and simpler for customers (and you might get some more referrals this way too if they share with friends looking to complete a similar project).
Export purchase history as CSV
If you wanted to add your credit purchases as a business expense (which you should!), you used to have to go line by line and copy and paste purchases into your own spreadsheet. But finally, just in time for tax day, we’re hoping to save you time by adding the ability to export a full history of your credit purchases to a CSV file. You can also use this to determine your ROI on Thumbtack.
Tie licenses at the service level, rather than user level
If you have multiple services on Thumbtack you can now have multiple licenses per service instead of tying that license to your entire user account (not good if you’re both a general contractor and a dog walker).
Reuse last message
If you’re a fan of our “reuse last message” feature, I’ll bet you weren’t a fan of having to scroll through many of the same templates that only varied by the customer’s name. Now we’ll only save messages that are significantly different from each other, which means less hunting, more sending. Now you can have an easily accessible template for wedding photography and portrait photography without having to look too far.
Edit review responses
Made a spelling mistake? No problem. Now you can edit responses to customer reviews. Not sure how to respond to a customer review at all? Read this.
Auto-refund first request in case of duplicate requests
If the customer sends a request and makes an error, they tend to go through and make another. On our end, we delete that first request. But now, we’ll immediately and automatically refund any credits you might have spent quoting on that first request.
“Gold Member” is now “Gold Profile”
If you’re a “Gold Member” on Thumbtack (this means you’ve hit 100 points) you may have noticed you’re now labeled as “Gold Profile”. We did this due to some confusion around the popular 2002 Austin Powers movie.
Get an update when you get a review
When a customer writes you a review you’ll now be updated within the Pro Messenger. No more wondering if they left you a review!
Share Your Feedback
As we make our way through 2015, we need to think more deeply about how we want to work with Thumbtack professionals. The above is a great start but we want to hear from you. What do you think the best way for us at Thumbtack HQ to communicate changes, collect feedback and help grow your businesses? Do you want more blog posts? Emails? Webinars? What will make you feel more empowered and heard? Let us know in the comments below.
