Talk about tangible results: Extraordinaire Painting has grown 65 percent in the last two years as a direct result of Thumbtack, says owner Dan Linn. Dan has been in the industry since he was 19, and knows his way around the house painting world. He uses Thumbtack to build his client base and turn Thumbtack leads into big money jobs. Here he shares his success stories for other Thumbtack pros looking to grow.
How did you get started on Thumbtack?
I saw a Facebook ad and thought I’d give it a try. The price was great per lead and there were no commitments or monthly fees. I’ve been on ever since.
What do you wish you had known when you first started?
How to write to potential clients. My quotes weren’t the best at the start. They were just way too long. I learned clients don’t want to read a story about you, they want to know just enough to make a decision about having you to come to their house and bid the job.
Any Top Pro advice for those just getting started on Thumbtack?
Before you get down on your luck or think Thumbtack is a scam because you’re not getting hired, call Thumbtack support to ask if there’s something you’re doing wrong. That’s what I did. I eventually changed my greeting message, which is what goes out to all my potential Thumbtack clients and that’s when things really started to change.
What percentage of your work now is from Thumbtack?
I would say a good 45 percent is from Thumbtack!
Do you have any tips for expanding your business on Thumbtack?
Always say ‘Best Of’ and ‘Top Pro!’ if you’ve received awards. When customers see those awards, it really helps you stand out from your competitors and gives you that edge.
Any tips for writing winning quotes on Thumbtack?
Just read my quotes. I’m joking! But seriously, I try to write a message that is to the point and gives the customer confidence to invite me out to give an actual quote vs. a price through messaging.
Always try and follow up and be a prompt as possible. You are competing against other contractors doing the exact same thing you are. I think customers like prompt answers and don’t like to wait days in between messages just to get answers to their questions.
Any especially rewarding Thumbtack jobs you’ve done recently?
The job I’m doing now is rewarding. It’s an exterior apartment complex 10 minutes from my house. It did take me several months to close the deal, but the total for the job ended up being $32,000.
I’ve also booked jobs through Thumbtack that led to important connections with real estate agents who now supply me with work. Thumbtack has really changed the numbers game for me when it comes to booking jobs.
Any specific advice for other painters on Thumbtack?
Communication! Have a good greeting message which goes out to all potential customers when you bid on their job.
How integral is Thumbtack to your business?
Thumbtack is a key marketing tool. Without it, my business would honestly not be doing as good as it is today. It’s funny—I tell myself I should put money into other lead generating sites, but I never find myself getting around to doing it, because I always have work I got through Thumbtack keeping me busy.
What other tools do you use to market your business or find customers?
I use Vistaprint to make lawn signs for each house I work on. I also have a company sign on my truck. I used to use mailers, but the percentage wasn’t that great for what I was paying. And of course I have business cards and have made plenty of connections handing them out to people I meet.
What’s the most critical element to succeeding on Thumbtack as a Top Pro?
Having a picture of yourself on your Thumbtack profile and a strong, to-the-point message about yourself and your company goes a long way. Compared to when I first started on Thumbtack, my lead message is what changed everything when it came to reaching out to the customer for the first time and arranging an evaluation of the property. Communication is key and always has to be mutual between you and the homeowner! I think if you have all those elements your business can succeed with Thumbtack.
