Every month, Thumbtack gets tens of thousands of requests for wedding-related services – everything from wedding planning to photo booth rental, and even candy buffet services – so we love to know what’s hot in weddings.
We recently had a chance to meet some of the wedding professionals who use Thumbtack and learn more about the industry at Wedding MBA, an annual gathering of over 3,000 wedding professionals. The event offered a preview of all the latest wedding trends – everything from the most popular flowers to the most popular new wedding technologies.
Here are some of our favorite new trends for 2016:
The most popular (and most delicious) food sample at the conference was something called a “bedazzled bonbon.” Yes – the bedazzling trend has now extended to candy. These sweet treats make the perfect party favor, cake topper, or centerpiece for your candy buffet.
Slow Motion Video Booths
Photo booths are great entertainment at events – and the slow motion video booth is an even more addictive and interactive version of the traditional photo booth. Video booths allow your guests to get in front of the camera and record themselves in the moment – throwing confetti, popping poppers, blowing bubbles, or just laughing and having a good time. The footage can be compiled into a memorable keepsake for the bride and groom.
Red Carpet Backdrops
From hiring paparazzi-style photographers to rolling out the red carpet, brides are turning their guests into celebrities. One increasingly popular way to pump up the glam factor is to create a custom red carpet backdrop – complete with the couple’s initials or wedding logo.
Beacon technology was a hot topic at this year’s conference, as Wedding Planners are discovering ways to use beacon technology to send messages to guests at large weddings. The technology has the potential to help guests find their way around the venue or let guests receive push notifications when the cake cutting or bouquet toss are about to happen.

Online Planning Tools
Planning a wedding just got easier, with a number of online wedding planning tools and apps, which both professional planners and couples can use to keep track of everything in one place. A few we learned about at the conference include Plan the Day and Aisle Planner. LadyMarry is another favorite. Mobile is becoming an increasingly popular way for guests to engage with weddings on social media too – there’s now a handly online wedding hashtag generator.
