We gave a big 40th birthday party for our son and wanted everything to be fantastic for him, our family, and all of our friends. We didn't know what a perfect choice we made when we hired Chef Marcel! We cannot say enough good things about Chef Marcel, his staff, and his wonderful food! The dishes were delicious - inventive and perfectly prepared! To add an extra challenge, Chef Marcel and his top notch sous chefs needed to cook in our kitchen and take food to our community room where we were holding the event. Every single step of the process was flawless and at the end of the evening I would have never known anyone had been in my kitchen! I had a recipe for the bartender I wanted to serve. She tweaked it and made it even tastier! Our guests wrote us the next day and raved about the appetizers, the meal, the yummy desserts, and the service, which was impeccable. The staff was friendly, kind, fun, and terrific at what they do. As most people know who give parties, the personalities of those who provide the service is critical. Every single person who took care of us was absolutely lovely. Chef Marcel was there the whole time. He was constantly vigilant making sure everything was running smoothly. He went out of his way to accommodate some hungry late arrivals. He was definitely in charge, respectful of his staff, gracious, flexible, and devoted to us having a great time! Our experience with Chef Marcel exceeded any expectations we could have possibly had. A million thank yous to him and to his stellar staff!

We live in Laguna Niguel, and Madkins Catering was on time and I remember saying to the waitstaff, "omg, there's still more food?! Needless to say there was so much food. Madkins Catering was upfront with me in the very beginning explaining how much of each appetizer or food item I'd actually be getting which is great. I think we adjusted the amounts a few times because I thought it was going to be too much food lol, and it ended up being still too much food.... But who's complaining? :-) My guests were very pleased with the meal and left on a very very full stomach. This company is very nice and professional and delivered exactly what I wanted. I forgot to do a review at the time of the event, but the event was about 2 weeks ago. Everyone please try them, the food is delicious and at a great price!

Jessica and her team stepped in at the last minute and pulled everything together for me for the day of my event. It allowed me to focus on the nearly 100 guests I’d invited and not have to worry about the caterer, bartenders, wait staff, valets, photographer, flowers, set up, etc. Jessica was professional and handled all the vendors respectfully, as well as attended to needs of the guests. I appreciated her ability to anticipate their needs, respond to their requests and do it all so seamlessly. As one who plans corporate events myself, I know the attention to detail that it takes in order to accomplish a successful event. Jessica definitely did that and I would trust her and her team to do another event for me --- without question. If you are looking for someone to plan, organize and manage your event, so that you can actually enjoy it, then 3 little birds is your event planning team.

The experience was incredible. I needed a professional chef at late notice in San Clemente and he helped complete the menu with me under my budget and have spectacular food. I had at least two of everything (sides, entrees, and dessert). I could not have had a better food setup overlooking the beach in San Clemente.

The planning meeting was wonderful. We ended up just ordering desserts from CAKE and setting up our own dessert table. Everything was delicious and the guests loved them all. Being able to customize the desserts was totally worth the premium over just buying in bulk from other outlets.

Alexis catered our annual holiday corporate party in our home for 30 people. Everything was perfect. She has an extensive menu to choose from. The passed appetizers were very delicious - potato chorizo empanadas, beef sliders, and spicy tuna krisps. The holiday menu was outstanding - hand-carved prime rib, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sautéed green beans, field green salad with pomegranate, goat cheese and candied pecans. She also provided a fabulous dessert bar with mini fruit tarts, cheese cakes, brownies, Christmas cookies, and flan. Her presentation was beautiful with a beautiful gingerbread house that I got to keep. Most impressive was her excellent servers who helped to set up our tables, decorate the tables, prepare the food and serve. They also served cocktails and prepared a wonderful signature holiday drink. They arrived on time and left my kitchen in immaculate condition. Put away every dish, cleaned the ovens, stove and mopped the floor. They were so professional and helpful. Our guests loved the food. We've had holiday parties at very nice restaurants the past 12 years but everyone agreed this was the best party because of the food and service they received from Alexis and her team. I would not hesitate to hire Alexis for another event. She is fantastic. Thank you Alexis!

Steven catered a flawless dinner this past Memorial Day for my brother’s bachelor party – it was truly a highlight of the weekend! From the beginning, I noticed Steven’s response time was not only incredibly fast, but also extremely receptive to our dietary preferences and general desires for the evening. After carefully designing the perfect menu, Steven meticulously sources his fresh, organic ingredients from local farmer’s markets; Admittedly I am annoyingly choosy when it comes to sourcing foods, and can safely say few restaurants match the quality that Steven brings to the table. Steven was happy to accommodate our group with an indoor/outdoor service so that the guests could take advantage of the property’s pool and firepit as well as the views from the main dining area. The total service must have spanned 3 hours, first bites to dessert, but the time really flies when you’re able to thoroughly enjoy the company of your guests and avoid the distractions and chaos of a typical LA restaurant. To top it all off, Steven’s staff left the kitchen spotless, and even prepared individual “meal-prep” boxes with the leftovers for all of our guests. Steven and his crew really treat you like royalty. Aside from humoring some of the group’s silly behavior and taking some phenomenal group pictures at sunset, you would hardly know the staff is there. I seriously recommend inquiring about Steven’s services for those who can appreciate a meal cooked with passion, need to make a special event memorable, or just want to have a care-free dining experience in the comforts and privacy of their own home.

Work quality - phenomenal Professionalism - fantastic Responsiveness - Joanna couldn't have been more responsive if she tried. Value- heck yes! Do you know how pricey mobile bartending and catering vendors can be in LA? This company is a steal considering the amount of collaboration and quality of service your receive. Punctuality - On time, super fast in setting up, even faster tearing down. I highly recommend this vendor. I planned an entire event from another state and Joanna made me feel like I had nothing to worry about on her end. Will work with her again for sure.

Moe was an amazing addition to our pool party! He came to our rescue with his responsiveness, professionalism, punctuality and food quality. We decided last minute to have a pool party with our out of town guests (30+) and despite finalizing the number and menu on Saturday night, Moe arrived to our home Sunday morning on time with the freshest and tastiest agua fresca, fruit salad, tacos, burritos, rice, beans and tater tots. Everything was presented beautifully and his customer services was amazing... He made the decision to hire him easy because of his manner and ability to meet our needs on such short notice. We enjoyed having Moe at our party his service far surpassed expectation!

I left this review on the Knot.com and thought I would repeat this here. We loved having Feast as our caterer for our wedding and highly recommend them. "For our wedding we were connected with Marcus and Feast Catering through a good friend who used to work at the Annenberg Beach House. What a great recommendation! Marcus sat down with us and was flexible in working with our budget. We really appreciated this. We were able to do a tasting with him, and Marcus was very receptive to feedback. We asked for an Asian influence for the menu and Marcus and his team pulled it off beautifully and creatively. The food was delicious. They arranged a beautiful beet salad that looked great in all the photos. We had soju coconut cocktails. The wines were good too. My niece said it was her favorite wedding food ever - Marcus was so kind to ask if we wanted a special meal for the few children that were attending. They had mac n' cheese, chicken nuggets - their favorites! Marcus managed his staff well, too. They decorated the tables nicely with the linens and Feast arranged the heat lamps and all the rentals for us. All of the staff were courteous and friendly - great service. Feast assigned a special person to look out for us as the bride and groom and make sure that we had all that we wanted - seconds on the buffet, an extra piece of wedding cake, another cocktail, anything. Thank you so much, Marcus!"

Shelley was an excellent professional from the moment we made contact. I was looking for a fun, team-building exercise as part of a staff retreat, and I would absolutely recruit Shelley for any future activity with our staff. Admittedly, I am not a vegan, plant-based person...so when I first saw her focus, I was a little hesitant. Our staff also are mostly omnivores. We aren't too picky but I knew we would be tired after a long day together. When I talked about our objectives and she put a proposed menu together (and also explained that we wouldn't have access to any kitchen or heat sources)...even I became excited about the evening and the food! I'll say that when we told our staff the "surprise" activity, they were more excited about her class than about the fact that we were going to spend the entire next day at Knott's Berry Farm! Shelley was early to the site, set up quickly, dove right in and immediately got us making a dish that would get food into our tummies after a long day of our staff retreat so that we wouldn't be "hangry." She "read" our group dynamic with a slick expertise and moved at a pace that kept us engaged. When she taught us knife skills, we were able to laugh and learn together in a memorable way. She had a plan for four courses, including dessert, but by the time we got to our third course -- rolling our own sushi -- everyone was literally rolling on our own because we were SO FULL. Most people in our group had never rolled or made their own sushi so they were thrilled for the experience. Dessert was perfect because it was light -- mango with yogurt. Our staff LOVED this experience. They asked if we could do this again and work with Shelley again at some point in the future. I would happily hire her back to create more memories for us and more yummy foods and teach us more great culinary skills. Thank you, Shelley!

Claudine is a wonderful person and a great cook. Her food was delicious. In hindsight, for the size of our house and kitchen, I probably would have used someone who was a bit more organized. She was a little late and had to bring lots of things for her food preparation, so dinner was a little late. She is very hands on which is great, I just didn't have the space for it! She and her assistant did a really nice job serving and cleaning everything for me. Claudine is a very hard worker.

Jessell planned our wedding. She coordinated everything. She worked with the caterer, florist, DJ, and production company...all we had to do was say "yes" or "no". Her onsite team was awesome and kept things running. Our friends are still talking about how cool it was. We would not have done anything differently, so 5 stars all around!

I am thrilled to share with you my experience with Chef LaTay. First it must said, her food is AMAZING. In Jan 2015, I married the love of my life; I had a small backyard wedding of about 75 ppl total and Chef LaTay catered the food for my special day. We decided to go with Tri-Tip Roast, Fully loaded mashed potatoes, Green Beans, and Salad. Her food was a hit. Delicious and memorable. My guests were happily fed and pleased with every bite and so was I. In the past, Chef LaTay would do weekly orders every Friday and Saturdays where she would deliver her meals to those local near her. It was a huge meal that came with dessert and a drink, worth the price indeed. That’s where/when I would also have some of her other delicious foods. My personal favorites are her Macaroni and Cheese, her Salmon, her Enchiladas, her Chicken (every way she makes it), and her Oxtail. She also makes wonderful tasty desserts. Her cakes are all homemade and are to die for. I love her Chocolate cake and her frostings are the best! Better than any other cakes I’ve had. And I can’t forget the dessert my husband and I always ask for throughout the year, Banana Pudding! Again, AMAZING! It is an honor to have Chef LaTay’s food be a part of my life. Every delicious bite makes you wish there was no such thing as getting full. Having her for your events or for a small special occasion, you won’t be disappointed. Chef LaTay is very creative with her food and service. She comes with class and excellent customer service. She makes sure you get what you asked for; just very professional with a welcoming loving spirit. Chef LaTay It’s Made Devine is worth your time to try her food, because I guarantee you, you’ll be asking for more!

I absolutely loved my party because Iris was there to take care of everything, including the cleanup. There was an abundance of delicious appetizers and her crew served them to our guests as well as made and served the drinks. We have heard from several people how beautiful and delicious everything was. We'll certainly call Iris for our next party!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
