Nima is punctual and very responsive to questions. We are very happy with the new bathroom vents. We've called around asking for quotes and Nima is the only one who can do it without a major construction. We highly recommend him.

Just moved into new home that was built in 1989. It is doubtful if the duct work was ever cleaned. Sean did a great job cleaning the ducts, cleaning the furnace, put in a new cleanable filter and cleaned the vent pipe to the dryer. I highly recommend this company as this is the only work that they specialize in.

Tom is friendly and efficient. That's why he is busy. Found him to be honest and reliable. I believe hiring a real contractor for roof repair was very important, because I don't want to wait for the next rain to see if he did a good job or not. I trust him and his quality of workmanship.

Martin and his team were referred to us. We closed on Friday, we fumigated over the weekend, and they had our 1200sq ft house apart Monday morning. Here is what they did in only five weeks: Exterior: -Repaired the fascia -Replaced my window trim on all windows, and two of my windows entirely. -Painted the exterior -Poured a patio -Replaced a large side gate -Built and painted a picket fence -Installed a mailbox -Helped me assemble my patio furniture in their down time -Hauled away two truckloads of garbage from the yard and garage that the prior tenants left -Trimmed the trees to keep the off the roof -Patched the roof -took care of the loose wireing in the garage Interior: -Scraped all ceilings -Ripped out all flooring -Ripped out the tub and shower -Ripped out the vanities -Ripped out the toilets -Ripped out all base boards -Retextured the walls and ceiling -Build two doorways -Built a small wall to fix the hall -Reinstalled the bathrooms with new fixtures -Replaced all the ceiling fans -Replaced two doors to the exterior -stripped my sliding glass door of that terrible fogging-effect plastic - hung fresh bedroom closet doors -new carpet in two rooms -new laminate in the living room, office, hall -new vinyl in the kitchen and bathrooms -new baseboards -new kitchen cabnet with counter to match the others -re hung kitchen cabinets to match the other side (they were low) -full paint -smoke detectors -fire extinguishers -re-wired my unsafe attic -new switches and plates Basically, They made it turn-key, from a total dump. And they stayed within my budget. But what will always stay with me is the sense of deep care and respect I felt every step of the way. Our first experience. Never were we blown off of treated like novices. Every time I share pricing with friends who have had work done on their homes, their eyes bug out at how wonderful our pricing was! They always went above and beyond. Like, meeting other people (the surveyer, the city for utilities, the garage door guy, the Apliance delivery guy) so that I didn't have to take work off. Like lending a hand with our last few boxes when we were moving in. Like staying around until my husband made it home on they day he got lost so that I wouldn't be alone in a new neighborhood after dark. Like working weekends to get it done. Like touching base every day with updates. Like helping me spray my yard with flea killer. Like always having a good laugh ready to share. Like answering my stupid "what-the-heck-is-this" calls weeks later when something native to the neighborhood would turn up (mostly bugs). I am so grateful. Also, It's been months and nothing has gone wrong. Our life carries on (knock on wood), and we don't think about trivial house stuff because it's all done.

Alan is a very reliable contractor that did repairs on a house I had in escrow he showed up promptly and fully prepared to replace a fence on the side of the house that was a mess. He as well replaced some insulation on ducting in the attic. The biggest job he did there was to epoxy the whole inside of the swimming pool it looks beautiful. He finished quickly all the jobs with excellent work and integrity.

Jordan and Corey are an amazing team - reliable, dependable, and they certainly rise to the occasion no matter what the problem/situation might be. In my case it was a moldy subfloor, rats living in the attic, and my two cats trapped in the attic! After only three weeks, my total bathroom remodel looks gorgeous!!!

Turnkey Remodel is a very reliable and trustworthy company to use when completing any residential remodel project. In 2007, my wife and I took the opportunityy to use Mark Apicella to handle our remodel project which included adding an inside hallway to the garage, and enlarging both our bathrooms. At the same time, the garage was drywalled and a large overhead attic storage area was added We were not only impressed with the superior workmenship of the custom cabinetry and marble countertops but with the timely fashion in which the project was completed. Within a short time, we had gotten to know Mark, and we both realized that his honesty and integrity represented a large part of why we felt so comfortable with him in charge of our project. Four years later, in 2011, we asked Mark to transform our old kitchen into a more spacious and updated space. Mark did just that! After removing a wall and adding a new load-bearing beam, he opened up the kitchen and thereby joined it with an existing breakfast room and family room. The entire space is now the most important gathering place in our home. Again, the custom cabinetry and beautiful granite countertops were fashioned in his own fabrication shop. Mark even gave us an opportunity to visit the shop and watch the cabinetry being made. We also were able to see a large template placed over the granite slab to be used on the island to ensure just the "right" look on the granite slab. With so much remodeling work completed by Mark, we are happy to recommend him and invite some of his prospective customers to view the work firsthand Thank you again, Mark, for all that you've done!

Local HVAC Expert Solutions installed my furnace years earlier and when I needed advice on heating a room with no duct availability, I called Mike. He gave me several choices and suggestions. Once I made up my mind, I called and his crew was on time, professional and fast. I certainly would use them in the future.

I had an appointment with (what I thought was a reputable company) on Saturday, March 22, 2014 to come out to clean my vents. After checking my ducts in the attic (and telling me there was too much duct tape), they immediately told me that my ducts needed replacing to the tune of about $4,000.When I balked at that, they gave me a senior discount and a store discount and got the price down to about $2,700.I still told them I would have to do that a later date. They wanted to measure the ducts that day and do the work on Sunday.I told them no way - I had too much to this weekend and would contact them later.Big red flag that it took so much conversation to get them out of my house.I later looked on line for a second opinion.Luckily, one of the company's recommended was Orange County Air Conditioning & Heating. The owner, Greg Bleacher, called me almost immediately and was willing to come out to take a look on Sunday. He was on time and very pleasant. He told me there was nothing wrong with my ducts and they did not need replacing. He also said that the duct tape was normal and the only reason to replace ducts would be if I had rodents that had bitten through the ducts or if a dove had somehow gotten in the ducts. The air flow is fine.I am so grateful for his honesty and expertise (which by the way he did not charge me for). Should I ever have a problem with my air conditioning, I will call Gold Coast Temp Control.

After getting four quotes for our attic cleaning and insulation replacement project we decided to hire Attic Wizard. They seemed to be more knowledgeable and overall gave us a better feeling face to face then the other contractors we've met. The working crew did an amazing job removing the old insulation, cleaning up the attic space and installing new insulation. The whole project took nine hours for them to complete and they worked very hard. Give a call to Attic Wizard if you need any attic work done.

Andrews Construction (Travis) replaced the stairs for our upstairs homeowners for our Condominimum Association last year and did a great job. Arrived on time & cleaned up after. We were so happy with them that we contracted with them once again this year, Feb. 2015, to do some additional work. Two more jobs just completed and we are contemplating two more jobs, budget permitting. Before we hired Andrews we got other estimates and found his to be the best for the services they provided. It is a pleasure working with them and they performed as promised. We will definitly use this company again.

Had multiple contractors come out to give us an evaluation/quote on our HVAC system. Everyone except TJ came in and started telling me what I needed without listening to what my problems and issues were with the system. TJ took the time to listen to what my issues were and recommended a couple solutions to fix. We ultimately replaced the entire system (compressor, furnace, etc) and added a new duct line and vent register. TJ rerouted the gas line to our furnace, relocated and hung the furnace in our attic, installed a smart thermostat in a new location, and more. His crew is very friendly and they all work quickly. They leave the work site cleaner than when they arrived which is so nice. Their quotes are very reasonable compared to what the other contractors were quoting. TJ even checked in the next week after everything was complete to make sure I was happy with the new system! I would highly recommend giving TJ a call for any and all of your HVAC needs.

Great Customer service. Homan explained everything clearly and got to work right away. Very punctual and cleaned up after his work. We found his number on-line and called for a quote. First time, asked for a quote to remove old kitchen fluorescent lights and install receding lights. The quote and work was so clean we asked him to come back on another time to remove all the old lights throughout the house and put in receding lights. He crawled into the attic, told us some of the wiring were old and not to code; he updated the electrical wiring to code. We have a nephew who is a an apprentice electrician; he looked at his work and said Homan did good work. Plan to use Homan again on other jobs.

I used GA Design Build for a wall removal and support beam installation. Once started the job was completed quickly and Gabe Alvarez explained the process and what was/wasn't needed. Due to the nature of the wall removal I did pay the extra money to have an engineer evaluate the project and provide plans. I feel that at the very least the engineer should have gone under the house and into the attic to verify load bearing beams and footings before signing off on the work. Also, the original plans called for (2) supporting beams to be installed, only (1) was used and I was told after completion other wasn't needed (despite the engineer plans), a bit disconcerting when its your house walls coming down. They also left one of the temporary ceiling supports still nailed into the ceiling, not wanting to deal with scheduling another visit I removed it myself, a simple final walk through takes a couple minutes but would show an attention to detail that customers expect. Last gripe was that during the install the crew moved a water pipe for an upstairs toilet, the beam that was installed is now in the wall cavity and I have a water pipe with no where in the wall for it to go, its another project that could have been avoided if the engineer and construction crew had done a more complete walk thru during the planning phase. The work is satisfactory, I may use GA build in the future but with the knowledge that my plans might change and there is some up sell, I'll budget accordingly and push for better communication. Gabe is personable and does try to work with the customer to reach the best result.

We had American Home come out to take care of our roof that was causing more issues than we were aware of. After they did a full inspection from going on top of the roof & also looking in our attic. They showed us issues that were affecting other parts of our home. We then become aware of the Owens Corning roofing system that we chose to go with to fix our roof. We were happy with the crew that installed our new roof & the time is took. Communication was also provided the entire way throughout the project. If you are looking for an honest contractor then we definitely recommend American Home for your next project!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

    • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
    • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
    • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
    • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
    • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
    • Ductwork properly protected.
    • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
