Gregor S. says, "Michael (the electrician who did the work) did a great job. We had 7 little projects we'd put off forever. He came in and took care of it all in about 2 1/2 hours. He replaced bathroom lighting, fans, a plug and a switch and installed a new hanging light in our dining room. It all looks & works great now. Now the bad news. We had scheduled someone to come out on Wed the 6th to do the estimate. My wife & I got home on Tues the 5th to a message on our voicemail saying he'd come out and no one was home and to call him to let him know what was up. I called at 6pm and left a message for him saying the appointment was on the 6th & please call back to confirm. No callback that night or the next morning, so I called at 930am. David(the owner) cellphone was garbled (just like on the phone message) but we confirmed he'd be over that afternoon. He arrived and started the estimate only to find his tablet & cell didn't have reception so he had to drive down the block to connect and get the estimate on his tablet. We set a tentative date to get the work done, but he couldn't confirm til he got reception again. I didn't hear back from him for days, so I texted him 3 times on the 2 numbers I had for him, no response for 2 days but he finally confirmed the date we'd talked about. When Michael was done with the project, I wanted to pay by card but his tablet (on the same Verizon service) wouldn't work either so I ended up having to pay by check. He said I'd get an email receipt. That showed up but it didn't show what was done, the balance that was owed or how I'd paid, it just show $0.00 and some terms & conditions. I emailed back for a detailed receipt and got no response. I called David and he said he'd send it. The first email showed a higher balance than what was agreed upon and no payment. The second finally had all the details of what was done, the correct amount & that it had been paid by check in full. If you have the patience to get through the mediocre customer service aspect, at least the job was done well."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have someone hang your Christmas lights?

It will likely cost between $200 and $400 to hire someone to hang your Christmas lights and holiday decorations. For an accurate cost estimate, ask installers near you to give you a price quote. Let them know if you need them to supply the lights, how many you want to hang and other details about this project.

When should you hang Christmas lights?

There’s no set rule of when you should or shouldn’t hang your Christmas lights. Some homeowners wait until after Halloween or Thanksgiving. Others may choose to hang them a few weeks before Christmas or at the beginning of December.

What do you use to hang Christmas lights outside?

If you want to hang up Christmas lights (or other holiday light fixtures) outdoors, you’ll need the following:

  • Christmas and holiday lights
  • Extension cords
  • Gloves
  • Gutter clips
  • Ladder
  • Power stakes
  • Tape measure

Instead of hanging the Christmas lights yourself, you can hire a professional installer to take care of this project for you.

What is the best way to hang Christmas lights on your house?

The best way to hang Christmas lights on your house is to use some type of light clip (sometimes called gutter clips). To help ensure your safety, however, consider hiring a professional installer who has experience with hanging Christmas lights, handling electrical cords and using ladders.

How many feet of Christmas lights do you need for a house?

You’ll need to measure your house to figure out how many Christmas lights you need. Some homeowners may want to start with 60 feet of lights — or 200 feet. You can take the guesswork out of it by hiring a professional installer or handy person to help you measure and install your lights.

How much do I tip Christmas light installers?

How much you tip an installer who hangs your Christmas and holiday lighting is up to your discretion. Some people prefer to tip about 20% for services, while others may choose to tip anywhere from $20-$50. It’s up to you how much you choose to tip.
