How does your business stand out?

Have you ever gone to the grocery store and the bag boy put your eggs and tomatoes on the bottom and then put your canned goods on top of them? Sadly, a lot of other movers that I hear about are no better when it comes to packing your items into a truck. I take care to deal with your items as if they were my own. My background is in transporting antiques, so that means that I am used to dealing with fragile and expensive items. It's not about how quick you can load a truck, it's about how well. Also, unlike some other movers, I am up-front about all of my charges and fees. I don't surprise you at the end of the job with "extra charges," so long as you don't surprise me with undisclosed difficulties.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

What I like most about my job is the people that I meet, the places that I go, and the freedom of being my own boss. I especially enjoy the long distance moves, especially when the job ends in a place that's fun to be in.

    Well I have to say I was a little on edge and worried about my move because Ken was so busy, but once we confirmed a day and time I was more relieved of how it would go! Ken was extremely peasant and careful all the way thru. I moved my things from Watsonville to Elk Grove it was a very long day and the price was extremely affordable (under 500.00). I had some help but he showed up with a helper and I was happy! Thank you Ken! And thanks for your patience! Mary

    Very careful mover, but I'd say almost too careful. 2-3 hour estimated job was 5 hours, and when he collected money didn't mention broken lamp, showing up 15 minutes late, or fact that it exceeded original estimate. I would've expected acknowledgement of shortcomings and lowering price for my 81 year old father.

    Ken did a great job taking the stress out of moving. He and his helper were (mostly) on time, very efficient with the move and the right price. He is a nice guy as well, it would be terrific to have him move your stuff.

    A++++ Ken was very flexible to work with me about schedules, and then went out of his way to make the trip when I needed him. One look at his truck and you know he takes good care of everything he moves; my leather chairs were wrapped in thick clean blankets carefully moved--just a great experience all around.

    I needed two very large and heavy desks moved from my home office out to the garage. Ken responded quickly and gave me an appointment for the next day. I was sure it would require two men but Ken said he could do it alone. He arrived on time and did the job easily and efficiently. He had the right equipment and was careful to protect both the furniture and the doorway frame. Ken is friendly and his price was fair.

    Moving can be a stressful and hiring movers can be even more so. I've had a couple bad experiences before, so I was a little unsure what to expect on thumbtack. Ken wasn't the first to reply to my request, but of the half dozen responses I received, he was the only one who wanted to see what we had to move in person. I had been considering another mover, although that fell through when that mover became unavailable for a two week period without any prior notice. Ken's quote was also more than reasonable, and I felt comfortable with him, so we scheduled the move. Our time was not specific (sometime mid morning). I don't know if that's typical for him, but it didn't bother me once we knew when he was on his way. Ken doesn't text, so you'll actually have to pick up the phone to reach him. I think that's probably better than email as well. I like texting, but I think Ken's old-school about that. Ken showed up as promised with a second mover, Theo. His quoted rate was for two people, not per person as with the other quotes I received. I later found out Ken (and Theo) are involved in scouting, which explains the ethics I saw Ken display before, during, and after the move. I was extremely pleased with the work Ken and Theo did. They were professional and amenable to all the extra requests I made of them. We ended up using them to help move some additional items, so the move took pretty much all day. And at the end, Ken didn't try to pad the hours or demand extra money (or any kind of tip--which I gave them anyway because they deserved it.) Ken charges mileage for his truck (fuel costs at 9 mpg) and return travel time from the origin of the move, which is pretty standard fare. Only one quote I received didn't do this, but their hourly rate was almost triple. You do the math. He also did not require me to commit to a minimum number of hours (although this move ended up taking more than 9 hours.) They weren't the fastest movers, but they weren't the slowest, and they were careful with our belongings, which I really appreciated. What's the good of hiring movers only to have your things damaged in the move? We also had difficult stairs at both the from and to locations. Ken doesn't charge extra for stairs, etc. It takes longer to be careful negotiating the tight corners, but that's to be expected. They put blankets down on all the railings. I think they might have run out of blankets, but I'm not sure. One suggestion: Be sure you've got everything packed and larger pieces accessible. They're used to moving furniture (I think Ken specializes in moving antique and high-end furniture) not packing boxes. Part of what slowed us down was that we were not completely ready for them, and we kept adding new items as they became ready to move. Still, Ken and Theo just smiled and asked what else we had. I would highly recommend Wood Frog Transport to anyone looking for a good mover. Ken made our experience a positive one, which may be the very first time that has happened for me in dozens of moves over the years.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Most of my work for the general public is priced based on an hourly charge, fuel cost, and other related expenses. It is usually very simple and up-front. For larger moving jobs, if I have to rent a larger truck, then there are also those related expenses.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Experience is it's own education.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was working as a part-time Jr High School science teacher and wasn't making enough money to get by. I randomly came across an acquaintance who I saw loading antiques from an antique mall. He apparently had a transport business. I asked if he ever needed any help? He said yes, and I went from helping load, to driving, and eventually buying my own truck. I decided that I liked doing this better than teaching Jr High. 10 years later I'm still truckin.
What types of customers have you worked with?
The most common job that I do is subcontracting the deliveries for high-end furniture stores and antique dealers. I am currently seeking several more such businesses to subcontract their deliveries. I also do general moving, both short and long distance.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I am generally proud of all of the jobs that I do. There is always satisfaction in a job well done. One recent job involved picking up items dropped off by a large trucking company at a client's residence. The client was told that her delivery would be sent within 10 days. 3 weeks later she was still waiting for them. The items that finally arrived were mainly some small leather chairs and a few boxes. I blanket wrapped the chairs (as I normally do) and loaded the items for further transport to the central valley. It was really a no biggie easy job. When I arrived the client was so happy that I had taken such good care of her things and that I brought them in a timely manner. It's all about customer service.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Ask questions and read their reviews. "Call me!"
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
There are a lot of good movers, but for some reason there seems to also be a lot of shady characters out there in the moving business as well. It's always good to get referrals. Some movers recruit helpers from off the street or through a labor service. I always avoid this, and use people who I know of their character and background. I simply don't take random cheap labor off of the street and take them into you house.
