"As a new person to receiving a massage, Lee made me feel very comfortable upon entering his studio. The studio was actually quite nice and has a relaxing atmosphere. His soft spoken demeanor and his professionalism made the experience quite enjoyable. Once on the massage table, he knew the right technique to use to knead the tension out of my neck and shoulders. And using the right amount of pressure on my back was perfect. Once the massage was over, I was so relax, tensions spots were gone and I needed a nap. As a person new to receiving massages, I will most definitely use Lee again."

"Chad is the real deal and a seriously talented masseur. He's intuitive and definitely knows his craft. And he's a great guy to hang with for a couple hours. I am that ex-athlete who refuses to grow old, so after a weekend of physically killing my body Chad fixes me up. My first session was two hours and I asked for a real deep tissue massage...he didn't let up the entire time. Afterward, I was definitely sore and dazed but it was a good thing. He also gave me some great advice on some specific areas of my body to work out to help maintain my maximum "weekend warrior" potential. Chad's just awesome."

"Leo has been my personal trainer for nearly 16 years. During that time, his instruction has been professional, caring, and geared to my personal needs and capabilities. I feel that my overall health, strength, stability, and knowledge that I have about my own physical abilities are due in large part to my association with Leo. I appreciate his accommodating my schedule, the flexibility of our sessions, and the comfortable, friendly vibe of our time together. He not only works on strength training, but is also able to incorporate core work, balance, compound exercises, hand/eye coordination, flexibility, endurance, and nutrition information, all with encouragement and positive reinforcement."

"Organic Escape is the best massage I've ever had. Felt SO relaxed afterwards. Luis is very kind and attentive. Beyond massage, Organic Escape offers neuromuscular therapy to heal injuries and conditions like carpal tunnel and TMJ. Luis does an excellent job educating you about how the body works and teaches you how to counteract the negative habits we form in our daily lives, such as "text neck.""

"Lindsey is an expert at massage therapy. She uses the best quality therapeutic grade essential oils for massage. She is one of the few massage therapists in Los Angeles that is Certified in Aromatouch Technique. My immune system was feeling really low and I scheduled an appointment with Lindsey for an Aromatouch Technique. She worked her magic on my back and feet and used her amazing essential oils. I felt so much better by the next day and by the second day I was fully recovered! I owe it to Lindsey's amazing massage. I will be getting regular massages from Lindsey. Not only is she reliable, flexible, punctual and professional, but she is caring and kind."

"I can't say enough great things about Jeremy and his massage expertise. He was my massage therapist for over a year when he lived in the DC area. He truly fixed my muscles on a monthly basis so that I could continue to work out at a high intensity. His massage techniques helped with my planter's fascitis, carpel tunnel and incredibly tight calve muscles. A massage with Jeremy is worth every penny. I'm incredibly sad that I can no longer see him monthly. LA folks, you gained one of the best in the massage business. Try a massage with him, you won't regret it!"

"Functionality! Having worked with Kz (I should get copyrights on that name since I started using it with her, what, 6 years ago?!! In all seriousness, Kz does what she does with such intuitive friendliness and grace that I sometimes forget I'm getting a massage as well. I'm a manic painter who will do hours/days painting and be an aching sore mess afterward. All these years later I ty not to take it for granted that I leave every session having had a FANTASTIC MASSAGE. I am not just refreshed, but invigorated; I'm in tune with my body, my feelings, and my muse. I've also come to know that I spent some very real time with a real, loving woman who listens without judgment, offers sage advice when appropriate and for that time we share together it is only us. Kz is truly empathic! I honestly feel she has helped me in so many ways beyond the therapy of her physical massage. The therapy of her being: being completely with me and working through my physical, mental, spiritual, psychic ( I hadn't been that open to metaphysical concepts before) and artistic knots (now knowing they are all connected) is something I cannot put a value upon. If Kz was not such a great mom, wife and human--she would be a superstar. She should be a superstar! She is as good as it gets. I'm thankful for our sessions, but I'm so blessed to call her friend!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

What is the purpose of a deep tissue massage?

There are many reasons to get a deep tissue massage. A deep tissue massage can release adhesions — also known as knots — that are causing painful tension in your muscles. Deep tissue massage can promote healing and ease discomfort related to illnesses such as cancer, chronic headaches, osteoarthritis of the knee, chronic neck or back pain, depression, and more, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you have an old sports injury such as shin splints, or a bad back from an old car accident, deep tissue massage can promote healing in your traumatized and scarred soft tissues and get you on the road to recovery. The strokes and techniques used in deep tissue massage work to lengthen soft tissue structures that have stiffened and hardened into knotty adhesions that allow minimal movement. Deep tissue massage can loosen these adhesions so that long-standing scar tissue releases and you can gain more mobility and more freedom from stiffness and pain. And it just feels good. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

What is the difference between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage?

Deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are both forms of therapeutic bodywork. In both modalities, a licensed massage therapist uses strokes administered with their hands or forearms to loosen and relax your muscles and other soft tissue. These releases can promote relaxation, pain relief and wellness.

Deep tissue massage may be an excellent therapeutic choice for people with chronic pain or severe tension in their muscles. The deep tissue massage technique moves below the top layer of muscle and soft tissue to release adhesions in your core muscles. In comparison, the strokes used in Swedish massage focus on loosening and relaxing the top layer of your soft tissues. Swedish massage produces relaxation and well-being, but if you have a long-term injury or back pain that won’t seem to go away, deep tissue massage may be a better option for you. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.
