Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a massage therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they're taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a massage therapist when social distancing?

Because massage therapy requires person-to-person contact, social distancing is not possible. However, you can ask massage therapists near you if they can offer remote services instead, such as lessons for you and your partner.

If you don’t want to book an appointment with a massage therapist right now, but you will in the future when the pandemic subsides, consider paying your massage therapist in advance or tipping them anyway. You can also ask about buying a gift card for future work.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a massage?

Many massage therapists accept digital payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. Even businesses that do not typically accept digital payments may be changing their methods to practice social distancing. Just check with your massage therapist before the appointment to see how they handle payments.

Does a massage therapist need to enter my home?

Many massage therapists operate their businesses out of their own homes, though some offer mobile massages and come to your home. You should ask the massage therapist where they typically operate and if they are making any special accommodations to better observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing

If you must cancel or delay your massage therapy appointment due to COVID-19, consider asking the therapist if they can offer massage techniques or lessons via video chat, email or some other digital format. You can also ask if it's possible to buy gift cards that can be used at a later time.

How can I find out if a massage therapist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential COVID-19 service provider varies from state to state and city to city. To see which businesses are considered essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city.

You can also read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do deep tissue massages work?

Deep tissue massage not only feels fabulous, it can provide results. The massage technique targets deeper layers of muscle and your connective tissue. For its ability to stimulate those deeper muscles, deep tissue massage is commonly used during recuperation from sports-related and other injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic. Deep tissue massage has been proved to reduce high blood pressure and a range of other ailments. Deep tissue and other types of massage are frequently used for relieving stress, managing pain, breaking down scar tissue, relieving muscle tension and improving health. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites the following as health conditions for which that deep tissue massage can provide relief:

  • Chronic low back pain, chronic neck pain, and osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Labor pains
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fibromyalgia pain and fatigue
  • Headaches
  • HIV/AIDS

The proper deep tissue massage may also benefit preterm infant health. Cancer patients may experience reduced pain, increased relaxation, and improved mood.

What is a traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage is a different experience if you’ve only ever had a Swedish or deep tissue massage. In Thai massage, you wear loose-fitting clothing (often provided by the massage therapist) and start by lying on a mat. Throughout the massage, the therapist moves your body into various seated and prone positions, which stretch and release your muscles and soft tissue. Although your body is moving, the therapist is doing all the work, making it feel similar to supported yoga. The massage therapist will bend, stretch, and compress and lengthen your body using their hands, forearms, elbows and even feet. Don’t be alarmed by the feet! Many studios have overhead supports that allow the practitioners to safely walk on your back, releasing tight adhesions and promoting ease. Thai massage can be both invigorating and relaxing. It is an excellent option for keeping your muscles in good health if you regularly work out, or if you want to overcome a lack of flexibility. Studies show that Thai massage can increase blood circulation, improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension and enhance mental well-being.

What are the different Swedish massage techniques?

There are five main techniques in Swedish massage: effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. Within each category there are various movements, all intended to ease muscle tension and pain. Each movement has a specific purpose for loosening, warming, soothing or stimulating your muscles during your massage. Here is a breakdown of each of the five Swedish massage techniques:

  • Effleurage: Sweeping, gliding, smooth long strokes done with the hands or forearms. These strokes can loosen and warm the body and are said to help stimulate blood flow.
  • Friction: These circular or transverse rubbing strokes are also warming and can get deeper into the muscle tissue. They should be avoided on injured or inflamed areas or areas.
  • Petrissage: Lifting, kneading, skin rolling, muscle rolling and wringing. These movements help with circulation, which stimulates cell regeneration, and aid in loosening tense muscles.
  • Tapotement: Tapping, plucking, cupping and pounding. Tapotement movements can help improve blood circulation and cell rejuvenation, and also relax and release tight muscles.
  • Vibration: Rocking, shaking and trembling movements. These motions can help muscles release.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

I scheduled her for my mom as a gift and she loved it. She loves deep tissue massage and it was just what she needed. Her hands and body weight are very strong (if you like really strong deep massages) wherever she would tell her she had pain or tension, she would know exactly what to do. At the end she finished by relaxing her muscles from all that deep tissue, she knew exactly what she was doing she was just amazing!!

He was late but made up for it by giving me a discounted price and was very apologetic. The 90 minute massage I received from him was by far the best I’ve had and I’ve been to various massage spas around San Diego. He really gets deep into the tissue. Definitely going to schedule more appointments with him in the future!

Everything about working with Dylan was perfect. He was quick to schedule, had fair pricing, showed up on time, and did a fantastic job. Not only did I get a great deep tissue massage, but he used hot stones and cupping to help with tougher areas. I highly recommend booking him!

I explained to Ms. Jena my chronic arthritic condition and how my massage therapist back home usually works with me and she was very open to the information conveyed. Ms. Jena is a very experienced with deep tissue massage and warming up the area before applying more pressure. My body is composed of muscle knots and I immediately felt and noticed the difference with my posture. She can also carry a pleasant conversation. If you're needing pain relief choose Ms. Jena.

On our family’s recent trip to San Diego, we set up an appointment for San Diego mobile spa to come to our house for multiple massages. Regina and her colleague were prompt, professional, and gave great service. My family each had different likes pertaining to massage and these guys were great! Some liked soft therapeutic massage, some liked Deep Tissue and some liked medium pressure. They also did great stretching and Thai massage which was intense but wonderful. These guys were really attentive to each persons individual needs. Thanks for helping us have such a nice addition to our vacation experience. We will definitely hire them again!

AMAZINGLY FANTASTIC!!! I had a girls weekend in San Diego and we had rented a beach house in Mission Beach. Leah came to the beach house for 6 hours to give all us girls massages and it was amazingly fantastic! I could tell with Leah that she had a great sports massage therapy background and she worked every single muscle. Usually when I get deep tissue massages I am in pain the entire time and very sore afterward but with Leah she was so gentle with my knots and I was actually more relaxed than I had ever been. Leah is very professional, nice and this was the best massage I have ever had. I wished I lived in San Diego to see Leah for a massage every month!

Karen is amazing! I used to get massages quite frequently and haven’t been able to do so for a few months because of COVID-19. I’ve been slowly trying to get back into working out and I have been experiencing a lot of soreness. I’ve also had a lot of stress and anxiety lately and it tends to build up in certain areas of the body. My “tension” spots. Karen identified every single one of those touch points and was able to dig deep enough to satisfy and release so much that had been built up. She is very sweet and will work with you to focus on your problem areas. She is professional and experienced. She is also very strong for the deep tissue soreness. I’m getting Karen every single time I get a massages. Beyond five star experience.

I had issues with tightness in my upper back, shoulders and neck and Erin spent a lot of time in that one area loosening it up. She got deep into the tissues and did loosen that area up quite a bit and I felt better. She also gave me a few exercises to do at home to keep it loose which has helped a great deal to maintain relief. I also have a knee injury which she examined and massaged along with taped it. That also seems to be feeling better. She talked about how she helps people who have scar tissue that causes pain. I have plantar fasciitis on my feet and decided my next appointment to have her also work on my feet concerning the scar tissue from surgery. I have set up another appointment with Erin for this week to continue working on my medical issues. Thank you Erin!

Karen gave me the best deep tissue massage that I have ever had and I've had a lot of them. She personalized my massage to address the pain that I have due to severe back problems including sciatica. She also found painful areas I didn't know that I had. Her knowledge of anatomy allowed her to get in and stretch the muscles around the nerves which were causing lot of my pain. When I left I could actually stand up straight instead of being all hunched over. I've had acupuncture as well as various other types of massage and Karen's treatment was far more effective in controlling pain. I'll keep scheduling until I go back to Montana for the summer. I wish I could take her with me.

I'm a mother of 2 (preschooler and toddler), long distance runner, and was recently in a front-end vehicle collision. So I had pre-existing neck/shoulder tension exacerbated by whiplash, as well as lower limb pain. Jenny did a one-hour deep tissue massaging of all the painful spots, along with some that I didn't even knew existed. I appreciated that Jenny didn't have to ask: is there anywhere else that needs attention, she just knew what I needed. Jenny was very professional, knowledgeable, and considerate, and I would not hesitate to book her again.

ObI asked for a deep tissue massage. I always get frustrated because no one can give enough pressure for the entire hour. But I need it deep and other areas I just need swedish massage. Karen did it all! I can not tell you how incredible her massage was. You just have to experience it to believe how skilled she is in technique and her hands just seemed to know every area I was in need. She did not miss a spot. If you are looking for a thorough massage, where you need more pressure say here then there. This girl has magic fingers. I felt NO pain for days after her massage. She also is good with the feet knows reflexology, and the cupping was awesome. I am having her come weekly. Nothing at all in my life makes me feel better then one of Karen's sessions. If you want your money's worth, and the best massage YOU can EVER get. Man, don't waste your money. Hire this Lady. She has over 20/30 years of experience. She knows the body she know where to go. Make her your masseuse, However don't take my weekly times away from me! All I can say is "Oblivian". and she is on time and empathetic and a real person. Easy to feel comfortable. I can not say enough! THANK YOU KAREN! Josh L.

Erin is very professional and yet friendly. I had stiff fingers and forearms due to guitar playing. She first analysed my muscle tension carefully(and meanwhile asking me effective questions) then went into deep tissue massage with special equipment. I aleeady feel better two days after the session and my finger movements are smoother. At the time of appoinment, she was waiting for me in the reception area of shared salons type of space where she has her own salon and took me there, otherwise would have had hard time finding her salon but her professionalism helped me on that point too.
