I hired Arisel to haul some dirt I had piled in the back of my house from a project my wife and I had been working on in the lawn. He was able to come to my house right away and quote. Price was reasonable and he was back the next day with help to get the dirt hauled away. We had him quote the pending projects we have been working on in the yard. (Installing base rock/sand, install big slate patio pavers, install gravel/pebbles, sod, landscape borders, and more...) We ended up using him to complete everything! It turned out really really nice. We were a little nervous in the beginning since we don't have much experience hiring help for our projects but Arisel kept in great contact and communicated wonderfully. He brought the right people to help with the jobs too. We will probably have him do any new project in the future.

Matthew and his crew did a great job repairing our retaining wall and driveway/sidewalk. He kept in touch with us consistently to confirm the dates/times his crew would be on site, explained the work clearly, and left behind a tidy jobsite. Highly recommended.

My wife and I would give them 6 stars if I could. Gustavo and his team did an awesome job building a new fence for us. It was a somewhat complex job involving two different architectural designs (one across the front of the property and one down the side) plus installing a new iron driveway gate. My wife and I watched in amazement as they worked carefully, taking the time to get everything just right. They did a really terrific job for us and we would recommend them highly. Please feel free to contact us as a reference anytime. Thanks so much to Gustavo and his great team.

Richard helped me design and remodel some features of my home before selling. Richard has a great eye for design and is able to construct as well. Richard and his team poured a new (black) concrete driveway, built me a new lateral cedar stained fence and painted the exterior of my home navy blue. This lead to a quick sale above asking, Thanks!

Limon Landscaping installed raised vegetable and flower beds with some pavers for good access to the pre-defined odd-shaped area in Hayward, CA. It took about 9 hours and I got what I exactly what I wanted. He stayed within my budget too; strong quality materials and professional workmanship on their part-Mr. Limon and his crew.

Tui is lovely, kind man. He listened to me, made suggestions and was always open and accepting to changes I had to make . This particular job was especially difficult, full of small details and awkward corners. The cement driveway looks spectacular and people passing by all mention it! Thank you, Tui and also to your lovely son!

We were thoroughly satisfied with the concrete work done by Kris Fredrickson, Anderson Construction’s concrete contractor. Our new driveway and sidewalk look great. Kris listened to us and did his best to accommodate our wishes, going above and beyond. We would definitely hire him again and recommend him to others. And Mike Anderson stayed in constant communication w/us making sure that we were satisfied with how the project was proceeding.

From start to finish Marco attended to every detail of our unique project. He helped us to custom design a driveway and patio and everything exceeded our expectations. His team was prompt, professional, and hardworking. Marco went above and beyond to make sure we would be satisfied with the results and we couldn't be happier. Of note, our neighbors saw the work in progress and hired Marco and his team the following weekend and their driveway also looks great.

We did a 6 month extensive project with Elder - backyard retaining walls, patio and basketball court, as well as a front yard paved driveway. Elder and his team were extremely professional, excellent working to push projects through our difficult city planners. We had a very challenging slope to conquer and he and the team did an excellent job in creating two high quality retaining walls and stairs to a beautiful patio at the top. We would highly recommend Elder and the Micro Resorts team.

Erick and his team were extremely detailed and very diligent in their style of fencing. His team were very flexible in our needs (and this is a simple gate for a driveway) that they were helpful in both description and action. Definitely worth the time and hire!

If I had to do it all over again I would still hire Genesis. David and his crew did a nice job on my pavers and my new turf grass. I liked it so much I decided to extend the pavers into another area of my yard. His prices are fair and his quality of work is great.

Abraham did a great job on covering two brick chimneys with stucco to match the rest of my house. He also removed and relaid a paver stone walkway that the original landscape contractor did improperly. His price was good as was his workmanship and professionalism. I would use him again and I am comfortable recommending him if you have similar work requirements.

We called Mark to look at some driveway work - removing old steps and adding new ones in a different location and paving over the old area as well as helping the steep incline an easier transition. He was very responsive and sensitive to what we were looking for and our schedule. We had to pause the project for almost a year due to some city issues but he was patient and ready move as soon as we got the go ahead from the city. I highly recommend his work and he has a lot of contacts for various needs.

I had Forticon replace my driveway in February of 2016 and was very happy with their work. They called me back right away, were fair with pricing and their workers were very respectful and clean while working on my house. I wish all contractors were so easy to deal with. 5 stars!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
