Raquel immediately understood Kuma's (our 1-year-old Chow Chow's) personality and geared her training for it. Kuma is stubborn and lazy and she would only listen to us when she felt like it. Raquel shared some techniques and tools to encourage Kuma to start listening to us and we were amazed at how quickly Kuma started listening to us. Thank you Raquel!

We have our first puppy and we were struggling with many dog training issues (integration with two adult cats, potty training, biting, barking - the works!) and Karen was a great partner in helping us communicate better with our puppy and achieve great results. She is knowledgeable, passionate, and eager to make a difference.

Denise was great with my German Shepard name Misty. When I started with her Misty was jumping and pulling me where I could not control her. After two months I was able to train with her in 4 Paws for Patriots. She is now a certified service dog. We would not have been able to complete that task without her training. Vance Myers

My main concerns with my 20-pound dog, Izzy, were that she would pull on leash and jumped on people to greet them. After Duane's training she is a pleasure for me and for other people to walk. In fact, when my neighbors walk her for me, she now walks side by side with their dog! And she now knows not to jump and to keep a respectful distance from people in the house. I get compliments on her behavior now and people say she is a "different dog." Duane is a terrific trainer and I would recommend him highly.

Being a Main officers of Rescue4Redemption, we pride ourswelves on picking the very best in the animal rescue and rehab business. Since the inception I have wanted Robert Weatherwax as our main trainer for several years. I never thought I could get him. He is one of the very best dog trainers in the business. If you don't believe me you can Goggle him. His family has had over 100 yrs experience in the dog training business and their dogs all are excellent. I thank the lord that Robert has come on board with us. Our mission is to save and rehab as many animals as we possible can. And he is the Diamond that just does that. I saw a post on here from some woman saying some disparaging things about Robert. These comments are completely false. Robert never even met the women, nor did he train her dog. So with that being said just ignore those remarks because they are just are not true. Just some stranger ranting about someone she doesn't even know. No one cares more for your dogs and getting them turned around the Robert. He is top notch. The standard of excellence he shows with each and every client shows when you 1st meet him. Truth be said if he didnt have this quality about him Rescue4Redemption would not have brought him on board. Once again we stand by excellence. With that being said, we stand with Robert Ruddell Weatherwax.

Stefanie has trained 4 of my dogs over more than 10 years and I cannot sing her praises enough! She has true compassion for all animals and has rescued and found homes for countless number of dogs. She has a real gift of "talking" to the dogs -- she can read their personalities and they bond with her. She is experienced, professional, strict but kind and understands all breeds -- purebreds and mixed. She assesses the situation, background, needs, etc. of the owner/s as well as the dog and adjusts her training method accordingly. Above and beyond her dog training skills, Stefanie is a warm, principled, caring person. I consider her a friend as much as my dogs' trainer.

Melissa is an awesome dog training. Just from one session, we saw a difference in our dog Frankie. She also has walking services that helps our Frankie with his anxiety. And not to mention more training time on the leash when she takes him out for his midday walks. She's flexible and very accommodating. I highly recommend her! Thanks Melissa!

Earl and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you how pleased we are with Shawdow’s training to date. We were both amazed at how fast we got the results we were hoping for. We are slower at learning than he is. We also appreciate your nutrition advice. Shadow has put on weight and his coat is looking better than since we first got him.

Angela is training my little 14 week old Havanese. Toy breeds are always a challenge and she's done a great job so far. She's patient, knowledgeable and works with me with home work assignments in order to build on the lessons my pooch and I are learning. I would recommend Angela to any new dog owner.

Basic obedience training , and training my dog not to pull on the leash.. Philip and Michelle Kaough were awesome with my dog. I would highly recommend Philip and Michelle to people with new puppies. They have a true understanding of dogs and their underlying motivators. They helped my husband and I see how vital structure and consistency is for Bo's happiness and well being. I really hope in the furture that we get to continue to the next level of training class with them.

Dave was such a great help to us in training our dog (or us, really)! He really took the time to explain the process and work with Sadie to overcome her fearful reaction to other dogs. She's made great progress & we look forward to more training sessions in the future. Highly recommended! Oh, and Sadie absolutely LOVES HIM.

This review is long overdue. We worked with Dave a few months back and he is fantastic! My husband and I have a 19month old Goldendoodle who has had previous training, puppy training through Petsmart and Petco but none of it compared to the training we received from Dave. He is great at what he does and explains things in a way that make total sense, like why didn't I think of this before?! He uses positive reinforcement training, which was huge for us. Dave works with your schedule and is flexible, he emails you after every session to go over what you've learned and how to continue the training when he's not around. We see a total difference in our dog after having sessions with Dave, we are looking forward to having him back in the near future to continue our training!

Alison was always a pleasure to have come to the house. Our dog Sonny just loved Alison. She helped us to teach Sonny basic obedience and he learned quite fast. She accommodated our schedules and was very flexible. She came to our home to work with Sonny twice a week. for 10 weeks. By the second week Sonny could follow commands pretty well. She gave us good advice on what kind of leach would help us because he would pull while walking. From the beginning, we could see a difference in Sonny's behavior and how well he would listen. We are very happy with the training Alison provided to Sonny and the tips she would give us on how to get him to do the things we wanted him to do. We will be calling on Alison again in the near future to assist us with future training. It was a wonderful experience and we are very happy and satisfied with the training we all received. Jerry and Cindy....

Our sessions were so helpful. They gave me a great foundation for training Sparkie. Walking on a leash has already become much better after implementing some of the things Tracy taught us. Thanks so much!

Jessie is knowledgeable and reliable about walking dogs. She has some training experience. My dog is very leash reactive and I'm not totally comfortable letting him go with someone without my supervision. Jessie was willing to let me do that. For now, I've postponed dog walking, but not because of Walk'n Wag'n. They seem to be a reliable and professional company. I would recommend them.

All aspects of Paw by Paw is amazing. Ayeumi is so kind, patient and understanding of the dogs that she is training. She got our dog as a baby and then he went back 8 months later and a 100 lbs heavier. Her training of both the dog and owner is superb as well as her assistance when needed. I would recommend her absolutely and proudly.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
