Chris O’Toole took on the Sisyphean task of: 1) proofreading; 2) providing a general critique: and 3) giving insight on whether and how to move forward on my draft play and associated essay. Mr. O’Toole use the yellow highlighter feature in Word to show his proofreading suggestions. I am still finding grammatical and word choice errors. This may well be because—due to my limited eye-sight— I didn’t see all his yellow highlights in making my corrections. He provided a general, dip-lomatic, thoughtful critique of the play’s subject matter; use of metaphors, poetry, and language; and connection with a reader or an audience. In making and evaluating my decision to hire an editor in general and Mr. O’Toole specifically, I looked at five factors: 1) experience and expertise; 2) cost; 3) turn-around time; 4) interactions; and 5) quality of work. Regarding the first, while I do not know Mr. Toole’s experience with plays, his website clearly indicates significant experience in editing other forms of professional writing. I believe the quality of editors’ websites and offers of services is a good indicator of their knowledge of and skill in teaching clients like me how to connect with their readers and audiences. Regarding cost, other editors I consulted charged on an hourly or a per page basis while Mr. Toole, in this first editing interaction, offered a very reasonable flat fee. There are pluses and minuses with each ap-proach. A flat fee was best for me for the initial editing of a draft play. The third factor is crucial for most authors working on deadlines. Mr. O’Toole sent me his edits and critique within two weeks. A second editor I contacted told me she could not get to my draft until January. Fourth, ed-iting is a collaborative enterprise: an editor needs to know the writer’s audience, intent, focus, and voice to help that author create his or her best work. Mr. O’Toole gave me feedback and questions on the writing sample I originally sent him. He sent me a follow-up email—with a targeted ques-tion--while editing my manuscript. Overall, I am happy with the initial editing efforts Mr. O’Toole gave me: professional; cost-effective; timely; and interactive. I am still rolling around the four page, shiny, rock critique he also gave me: gold or dross; foundational, aspirational, or weighing down: moving the draft higher or back into an inky sea? Whatever it ultimately is, he initiated a thought provoking internal and external conversation for/with a novice playwright just as my response here illustrates the meta-phorical challenges Mr. O’Toole confronted in critiquing and advising me on my writing.

They've edited six or seven books for me and, unlike editors from larger publishing houses, working with them has been a refreshing delight.

Guitta edited a screenplay I wrote. Her suggestions were great and helped me see what was not communicating well and what was unnecessary. The revision was clearer, more interesting and drive home the points I wanted to get across to the reader.

Skip took on a job that was pretty big and what made matters worse, a person that had just neglected the fundamentals of writing. It's not that I don't know them, I was just too lazy to apply them the way they should be. He reminded me of it. I asked him to be brutally honest and he was. The wonderful thing about him, he later pointed out the good things I was doing right and eventually made my confidence skyrocket. The job your asking me to describe is not only Skip helping me with the book I am working on, but him guiding me and restoring my confidence to get me back in the fight after being knocked down by life, people and dare I say editors and publishers. He made me realize putting forth my best effort in a world that is so competitive is just too important to forget. You ask what went well with Skip? Everything, but what stood out the most was his honesty and clarity of various situations and problems. The quality of his work and guidance is excellent and I couldn't ask for any better advisor. Nothing could improve my experience with him, that's how impressed I am with him. Thanks Skip and I look forward to continuing to work with you. Sincerely, Jeffrey L. Ivory

I worked with Emily Kazmierski for 3 years. We have both grown in the field of editing. She is an accomplished editor and writer. In fact, she trained me and was very patient and knowledgeable. She possesses all the techniques and skills for editing and writing, and her turnaround time is outstanding. Her attention to detail (especially comma splices) is exceptional, and her ability to stay organized is excellent. Emily is a true talent in the field of editing and writing, and anyone who has worked with her knows of her gifts. She brings a great deal to the table, and I believe that she is the finest editor and writer around.

After interviewing several Editors, it was a no-brainer to pick Tanya. Her skills seemed far superior and they proved to be sky high above my expectations. Tanya is a wordsmith extraordinaire who breathed new life into my story! She is friendly, communicative and was always available for my questions while working on my story. Bezuki Services / Several Stories High is a great team. They were very professional and passionate with my story. I ended up with my story that now flows well for readers and has an eye-catching cover on the book. I feel blessed to have found this team!

Celia copy-edited my manuscript as I was preparing to go on submission to literary agents. Her work was fast and extremely thorough, catching not only typos and grammatical mistakes, but also helping to maintain style consistency. I have since signed with a literary agent (with that same manuscript)! I would definitely recommend Celia to anyone looking for a key editorial eye to give your manuscript a boost of professionalism!

Kandice is excellent. She is extremely professional, highly talented and has the wonderful ability to teach in a manner that you "get" the material. More impressive are Kandice's writing abilities. Whether her work is for social media or scripts for production, I've found her writing to be very expressive, delivering the "message" in the manner we wanted.

Jaz is my go-to editor when it comes to proofreading, editing, and story notes. I've worked with her on novels, applications, TV scripts, and even important emails. Breaking Jaz down: Proofreading: I'm dyslexic, so I NEED a good proofreader. Jaz doesn't let a single typo or grammatical error slide. Editing: She simply has an editor's mind. Time and time again she has tweaked my work to make it more concise and easier to read. Story notes: Jaz simply has a gift with story. She is able to pinpoint major problems and offer solutions that can really take your work to a professional level. She is also stellar with character and character voice/dialogue too. Jaz is always punctual with deadlines and a joy to work with. I couldn't recommend her more!

Amy is all about focus. That's what I gained from working with her on several different writing projects: a better understanding of how to focus my work. Amy cares about the unity and clarity of the final product, and she's passionate and thorough in her guidance toward those ends. With Amy, you're asked to consider what each sentence adds to the whole. She hates waste and has a keen eye for it. Through working with her, I've developed a better sense of writing as communication - how to get an idea across, how different readers will interpret different words and concepts, how editors and publishers will judge writing in ways the novice writer might not be prepared for. I think of myself as a more astute writer for Amy's guidance, with a clearer understanding of the place my writing can have in the world. But the best thing about working with Amy is getting to discuss writing with someone who cares about the craft in a more than superficial way. Amy isn't just a teacher; she's a scholar and a stylist, a creator and a critic. Her knowledge and interests cover a wide range of topics and disciplines, and she brings that rounded background to bear on each project she takes on. I'm lucky to have had her in my corner.

I found Juleen to be professional, she performed the work in a timely manner and her edits greatly improved the final product. The editing projects that she helped me out on included scientific manuscripts, grant applications and content for a blog. I highly recommend her services! Janice C.
