Ricardo was wonderful. He did an amazing job of painting my bedroom, was quick and clean and left the space tidier than he found it. I would absolutely recommend him and will use him again for my next project (assuming that he is available)... Brilliant.

Matthew was awesome. He helped me haul some junk out of my old apartment and even sent me a photo of some of it at goodwill, just so I could know it's off to a new life. We talked a bit and I can tell he's a good, honest guy. I'm looking forward to working with him again!

Vyron With his crew-Marco and Pablo did their jobs well. Painting the window trims and baseboards, doors, garage as well as caulking were time consuming but they paid attention to detail. We had wanted to change the roman tub faucet trim but it was unreachable from the access door. In the end, we had to create another acccess door, modify the plumbing. The results were great and we have a beautiful chrome Faucet in place.

I hired Jasper from My Apartment Is Better Than Yours. I think they did a terrific job at a very reasonable price. I'm really pleased that I decided to go with them. I had a number of unusual carpentry tasks to complete when I moved to my new place. The windows were old and the wood was irregular and moldy, so the wood around the antique glass panels needed to be replaced. I was told those windows hadn't been opened in 40 years, but now they work perfectly and you'd never know the wood wasn't original. Also, several doorways lacked doors when I moved in, and were unusual rounded shapes cut into the stucco without doorframes. Jasper was able to make me custom doors with antique iron-wrought handles, and they look awesome. I also needed threshholds worked on, cabinets put up, new benches made for my roof deck, a custom projector and screen put in, antique chandeliers installed, a lock repaired... and I'm probably forgetting one or two things. They are in the process of putting the finishing touches on my humidor (they had to build me custom legs for it), and it's going to look spectacular. Anyway, they knocked it all out of the park. They were prompt and clean and didn't cause much of a disturbance despite all the work they were doing. They'll be my go-to for anything I need done in the future. I definitely recommend them.

We had Ryan over yesterday to repair 3 interior doors in a very old and actually historic San Franciscan Victorian house. In addition to the three interior doors, Ryan painted the front door which had also just been replaced. His attention to detail was great, there were constant adjustments to make sure everything fit, latched, matched, didn't drag, looked great, etc. His response was prompt, he replied almost immediately and was available to start the very next day. He came prepared for the job, from start to finish. Ryan is very up front and fair in terms of compensation. You will have zero issue with the transparency and fairness of his bids. It should also be noted that this is a very old building. The areas where the door hinges connected to the wall/door frame were extremely dilapidated, the wood was old and and over drilled. It was like putty. But Ryan rocked it. Not only did Ryan pay close attention to the style of the Victorian building and matched the details perfectly, his finished product was seamless. You can't even tell that work had been done. There wasn't even dust on the floor. It was legit, honest good work. 100% recommend.

Julian responded quickly to my online inquiry. We desperately needed assistance with completing our botched job of painting our daughter's room. This was time sensitive with her bedroom furniture arriving the same day. Jesus was very professional and did an amazing job. Communication was key to the finished outcome and we couldn't be anymore pleased. Thanks for making our new adventure here in the desert a little less stressful!

I hired Juan to remove the popcorn texture from my condo and to prep the ceiling for painting. The whole job took about 2 and a half days. I was very impressed with how professional and punctual Juan was. Juan's work exceeded my expectations and I would love to work with him again in the future. Keep up the good work, Juan!

Kyle did a great job. His bid was competitive and the quality and detail of his patching and repair as well as his painting was outstanding. There were several setbacks due to other contractors works and Kyle helped re-patch work he had already completed. I highly recommend KDF Painting.

We contacted Mike on Monday, he came to give us an estimate on Tuesday, and the job was done by the next Tuesday. Not only was he fast and flexible on timing, he was a pleasure to work with and the paint job was absolutely top notch. We could not be happier with Mike and his team and the job they did painting our apartment.

Hayley Ferreira is a sensitive, elegant artist whose work respects her client’s vision while demonstrating the full breadth of her experience, skill and knowledge. The murals she creates can make an ordinary house exceptional. My house in San Francisco has an upstairs bedroom that covers the entire top floor. It has cathedral walls and I wanted to decorate one with an ancient Roman fresco from the Pompeii area, the “Primavera di Stabiae.” I contacted Hayley Ferreira of Ferreira Designs through the Website Find-a-Muralist, after reviewing some of her work online. Hayley was wonderful! She came out to my home and looked over the space, which climbed to 12 feet at its peak, as well as at my printouts of the fresco image. She took pictures and measurements, and listened carefully to my description of how I envisioned the fresco would be transferred to the wall, allowing for the proper scaling, the necessity of extending the original across a much wider horizontal axis, and the adjustments around my closet doors and fixtures. She explained various materials and options for painting, and recommended a limestone paint that would capture the antique feel of the original fresco. We discussed costs and she was up-front and candid about what could be done with my budget. Hayley was also very accommodating on the timeframe. I had a lot of apprehension about the job, since I’ve never had a mural painted before, but she made the process very easy. Overall, she was a pleasure to work with and completely professional. The actual painting took about 4-5 days, with Hayley and her assistant coming to my house while I was at work. The intrusion on my space was minimal and my cats were always calm when I got home. The result is fabulous! The finished fresco is dramatic, vivid and perfectly appropriate to the space and my house. I am so happy with my mural, which glows with color and transforms my bedroom into a unique private garden. Hayley’s skill is such that she was able to capture the cracking and fading of the original fresco, which was something I especially wanted. I also asked Hayley to paint my dresser to echo the fresco. It’s now a charming companion piece to the fresco, featuring “antiqued” garlands on the drawers. Working with Hayley was a terrific experience! I highly recommend her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
