Introduction: I have experience as both an educator as well as an active performer in the Bay Area music scene. My versatility as a musician and educator has allowed me to collaborate with exceptional musicians and a diverse community of students within after school programs as well as in private lesson settings. I create my own methodology and teaching materials for each student and direct my teaching focus with students needs and interests in mind. I always strive to bring a balance of discipline and fun. There are many directions lessons can take from help with original tunes, learning favorite songs, theory, composition, improvisation, chord/scale connections, and on into stylistic choices and concepts within the many different musical genres. I feel incredibly lucky to have Michael as my teacher! I hope I'll be able to do so for a long time! Three years into grad school, I realized I really want to play the guitar, which has been a childhood dream of mine. I ran to the closest Guitar Center, bought a guitar, and started taking lessons there. For three months, however, I found myself stuck on the most basic things. For instance, I didn't know what to do with subdivisions, yet my teacher back then didn't say much as I butchered one piece after another. I had no idea whether I didn't try hard enough or if I was on the wrong track. After enough frustrations, I Googled "guitar teachers in East Bay" and found Michael's "Groove Lab" (it was the name that initially caught my eye). Even over the phone I could strongly sense Michael's joy and passion for teaching this instrument. He seemed to be a super upbeat person (no pun intended) and have a sophisticated teaching philosophy. I started taking lessons with Michael since this August, and it was everything and more! He explains concepts clearly and puts them to immediate practice. Within a few moments, for example, I learned how to count 8th notes, which I'd been struggling with for months. When things don't go as smoothly at first, he is patient, encouraging, and tries out different methods with me until something clicks. Apart from the lessons, I highly enjoy the personalized exercises that Michael developed for students, which are fun and just at the right level of difficulty. Moreover, I'm pleasantly surprised by how responsive Michael is to questions I ask after class, which I'm grateful for. If you're reading this and trying to find a guitar teacher, I'd say Michael is the one! In terms of personality, pedagogy, and commitment, I can hardly imagine a better teacher!

My daughter took guitar lessons from Michael for years. He was great and she learned a lot. She played jazz guitar in Albany middle and highschool jazz bands and continues to play in college.

Thanks so much Amy! I always had a great time working with Dylan. She was a pleasure to work with and a joy to know through the many years! I am so glad to hear that music is still a part of her life in her college years! Thanks Amy!

Michael is great. His enthusiasm and positive outlook have been great for my 9 year old son, just starting out with the guitar. He’s learned so much so fast!

We feel very fortunate and lucky to have Mr. Dub teach our 11 year old son guitar. Mr. Dub is not only patient with children, but his approach makes music fun and interesting. Instead of forcing his students to learn certain music, he allows them to choose the type of music they're interested in and helps them towards their individual goals. Mr. Dub is always makes learning music a positive and fun experience!

I find Michael to be a fantastic mentor and teacher. He teaches by example, and since he still gigs around town he practices what he preaches. He is a great communicator, and very patient. Always up and optimistic. His education in Music theory comes in very handy when you want to know more than just how to play chords. Michael is the real deal. -David S

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Over the last 20 years of teaching I have taught all ages from age 5-65! I have taught students that are just beginning to explore music all the way on up to experienced musicians that are looking to expand into new musical territories. I have even taught rock stars kids! A few years back I taught Billie Joe Armstrong’s (Green Day) youngest son who has gone on to have a successful career in his own right.
