Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I'm a perfectionist who is reliable, friendly and professional. If I think a project is beyond my abilities I say so as soon as that becomes apparent. I'm also a little obsessive about fairness and honesty. Occasionally a project will be more complex and take longer than anticipated, but I keep the client informed and am happy to pass the job off to a contractor, electrician, plumber, etc., if that's warranted. Helping and meeting new people, fixing things, working with my hands and keeping beautiful old houses in good repair.

I had Barney help hang a 24" x 24" framed print on a cinderblock wall in my loft. He worked quickly and did a great job, was very easygoing, and I'm planning on using his services in the future.

Barney did an incredible job with the task at hand. His attention to detail was much appreciated, and the project ended up looking wonderful. Barney was very professional, yet personable the entire time. Would definitely use again for additional jobs.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I bill hourly, in 15-minute intervals, at $75 per hour, and $90 for the first hour. When I bring a helper that per-person rate is reduced to $140 for the first hour, and $125 for each hour, thereafter.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I SCUBA dive and can fly planes and helicopters. I'm also a sailor and have skippered 40- to 52-foot yachts on vacations in the Caribbean with friends and family. While I love my work, I'm surprised this is what I'm doing. I was in banking and marketing for years, but corporate jobs left me unfulfilled. When I moved to the Bay Area in 2009, and with the help of an old friend in the business, I realized my knack for (and semi-obsession with) fixing and building things was a valuable service.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I installed a large vanity in a bathroom with a diagonal wall. I had to cut and modify the vanity to fit, then reinforce it and modify 2 of the drawers because the client wanted the sink above them, in the middle. The client was referred to me by my close friend, a very successful handyman in SF who's been doing this since 2002, and who introduced me into this line of work. He had passed on the job because he wasn't sure he could do it well. It turned out better than I could've imagined, and the client was thrilled.
